Thank you Dr. Desai for a very detailed and clear explanation on what a patient can expect post the Whipple surgery. I am scheculed for a Whipple due due to a Mucinous Cyst with worrisome features. Two questions: What are the advantages of "Open" versus a "Laparoscopic" Whipple? In your experience, what % of patients will need to be on insulin post surgery. Thank you for your input!

A surgeon has to decide the technical approach ( open, laparoscopic or robotic) based on the disease extent, anatomical details, patient clinical evaluation and many such factors. If all these are taken into consideration, each approach has it's merit which depends on the case at hand. Insulin requirement usually is not an issue with Whipple if rest of the pancreas is not atrophic and functional before surgery. Hope that helps. Best wishes for your surgery.

Had the whipple in May 2022 and had blood tests every month after. The only real issue is the random stomach aches due to me not following my diet correctly or just eating the wrong thing. There is also the numbness which I've been advised may never go away completely.

Sir need ur opinion. After surgery my dad faced issue of bile leak. After second surgery if that happens again then what should we do?? Doctor suggested to wait for next 4 days

What blood test needed after whipples procedure

Different tests are required at different times and different disease stage, for various age groups. Best is to have a follow up for atleast 5 years after the surgery and follow the protocol as per above criteria.

As Dr. Cady said, “Biology is King; selection of cases is Queen, and the technical details of surgical procedures are princes and princesses of the realm who frequently try to overthrow the powerful forces of the King and Queen, usually to no long-term avail, although with some temporary apparent victories.” Case selection is critical to success and we have 15-20 year follow ups as well.
