I recall a lecture presented by a great professor of surgery many years ago when I was in school. It concerned the diagnosis, preoperative evaluation, operative and post-operative care of the pt. undergoing the Whipple procedure together with radiographs, histologic specimens, etc. Finally the pt. himself stood up...some 8 years post op., smiling and waving. One would have thought, based on the radiographs alone, that such a result would not have been possible. Luckily the pt. wanted his surgeon to "at least try".

Very sorry to hear you are having such a tough time of it. I have a friend who went through it about 3 months ago as well, and he is doing fine, although I'm unaware or what stage he was in or any other details. Getting this disease is such a rip off. I wish you well, and will keep you in my thoughts.

My 75 yr old Mum had this operation 8 weeks ago, she also had a massive hernia to repair, most of her stomach & pancreas had gone through, the operation took 12hrs! She is still in hospital having set backs with infections. I keep being told she is doing well but she is nil by mouth & on a picc line for nutrition. Hospital rules due to covid-19 is no visitors, she is very depressed & doesn't feel like she will ever go home 😭

Hi MrCenriquer I'm in England and had a Whipple surgery on the 17th April. I'm now back home but still have two drains attached, which will hopefully be removed next week. They say it can take 4-6 months to start feeling anything like pre-Whipple, so patience is key in this game. The Whipple is complex major surgery and taking small baby steps with plenty of rest of is important. I had a lot of complications in the days after my surgery: Stage 4 kidney failure, pancreatic fistulas, extremely low BP, and a wound infection that saw me back in hospital for 2-weeks. All these issues are commonly seen and can be dealt with swiftly back by MDTs so I had full confidence they'd sort it. You don't mention anything about your mum having any issues, so if she's nine days out of from surgery I'd say she's in a good place and the longer she goes the less likely she'll encounter such complications. I'll pray for your mum, but it seems God has her in good hands.

I had an 8 hour Whipple on 4.26.16. Stage 1B but hadn’t spread anywhere, including all lymph nodes removed were negative. It was in the head found accidentally because of cat scans looking for something else that turned out to be a hidden UTI. In the scans the Pancreatic Duct went from a 2 to a 6 dilation in 3 cat scans. Was in hospital 11 days. I was to have 6/months of radiation and chemo that took close to 8 months as my body didn’t handle the chemo well. April 26 I’ll have survived two years . I get Cat scans with dye every 3 months. My November 19, 2017 came back possible early recurrence so had to wait 6 weeks for another CT with contrast dye and was back to NED. I was adopted as an infant and therefore don’t know my background but I also had breast cancer in February 2013 requiring two lumpectomies and 32 radiations. So two major non related cancers in two years. So though I’ve excellent care I fear for my odds. I can’t eat anything without taking a Creon pill of either 24,000 or 36,000 units. I live in fear of not being in the 9% still here in 5 years.

Praise the Lord! I'm a S2b patient in England. I had the Whipple in mid-April '24. I got 2 positive nodes from 18 with large clear margins. I'm 53 and pretty fit, so even if the stats say I've got 20%-30% chance of being here in 3-years I'm made so much more hopeful when I see comments like yours. 10-years (hopefully 11 or 12 years now) is a huge milestone - Congratulations! I wish you many more healthy cancer-free years ahead.

I have a question about pancreatic cancer in general that I cant seem to find an answer online. Im an ER and Trauma RN, and my mother was dx with stage IV pancreatic cancer in july 2021 at 62 years of age. She also had a mets to the omentum, ans striations in the liver. She underwent chemo, and responded well. She had radiation also, and a ct post radiation showed a stable tumor size, and the met to the omentum is gone. (Dec. 2022) Her CA 19-9 is rising rapidly, but a surgeon is ordering a PET and another CT prior to partial pancreatectomy. My questions are: 1. why was initial ct reported as tumor in the head, and now the tail? Im sure it didnt pick up and move 2. Why was surgery not done initially, and only after chemo and radiation? 3. No follow up PET had been done before surgeon ordered it. 4. Will a partial pancreatectomy after the ct and pet extend her life at all? 5. What is the typical course of pancreatic cancer? Example: it typically goes to liver, and that's toward the end? Brain? Not much is on internet about her course.

Just reached ten year survival of pancreatic adenocarcinoma stage 2b,node negative, clear margin and tumor size 2cm at its greatest dimension.Whipple surgery and lots of chemo and chemo radiation.Mass General Hospital was just incredible for the surgery and the ten years of followup.Do think I set a guinness world record in that I was back running 21 days post whipple. For any of you who is reading this and have been diagnosed Im sending you some some positive energy.Stay very tough mentally and push away any negative people.Im not anyone special and I have become a survivor and so can you!God Bless you and you are in my thoughts and prayers Jim the Marine(70 now)

Doctors tried to do their best. My husband btother had pancreatic cencer and wipple surgery done.but after 4 months in scan showed it sprayed in his blood main vessel. He died on 8 January this year. Now my husband had the same thing and done whipple surgery in February and had straight chemotherapy. For 4 months. In scan after four month's now it has cleared.if whipple surgery was not done he would be dead by now.i thank to the surgeons who did opratation in royal free hemstead. ....Thanks.

I went through the Whipple 3 months ago and I regret the whole thing. I still have a lot of excruciating internal pain, disgorging food on a regular basis, having a hard time figuring out what to eat that will stay in my stomach. At the time I didn't have insurance and the treatment I got was despicable!! For the very same reason I refused to go back for Chemotherapy.I rather expire if that what waits for me,, I just wish it wouldn't come with this much pain. Good luck for that 20% who make it!

Juicing not a better option. 8 year Whipple Survivor. Exercise daily eat healthy, fast occasionally( use Autophogy to my advantage ) all the past 8 years after Whipple, I work everyday to continue to be a stage four pancreatic cancer survivor. Their are no options to just sit around and do nothing to fight this awful disease. Lost my wife three years ago to colon cancer. Scared enough to not take every day seriously. I have kids and grandkids to live for as well as myself. Never give up, Never give up and finally never give up. One day at a time!👍🤙😎🍀❤️
