Achieving personhood as a moral standard, as Wiredu proposes, is also a philosophy in many native American cultures. Community engagement and taking care of others in many societies earns you elder status. Elders are seen and heard when important matters arise. I say Wiredu is on sold ground.

Good work Oheneba Wiredu....but the interpreter has a strong English language ascent making it difficult for lay people to hear it clearly

So how does Wiredu regard non-infants who lack (or who are attributed a lack of ) rationality: old humans, “disabled” humans, “mad” humans”, humans in pain who are not acting now-this-moment in a reasoned (but rather reflexive) response ... or comatose humans or even sleeping humans?
@EmpyrealEndemic

the idea is the capacity for that rationality. A sleeping person is a full person. However the disabled and mad may be considered more like infants, if they have no capacity to become rational again. We may not always have empirical knowledge of this which I think is unsatisfying for the westerns. But I think thats what Wiredu would say.

Interesting. What strikes me as important is the distinction between family responsibility and "community" responsibility. Conflating these as happens many times in this upload seems dangerous. For example, a mother and father _clearly_ have a responsibility to their newborn baby. Does anyone doubt this? But if my neighbor is a jerk and then mismanages their crops, the claim that I am responsible to them seems to be of an entirely different category. I generally agree that you lose virtue if you neglect your _legitimate_ responsibilities to others. But then who decides what these are outside of the immediate family? If we disagree, then it create an odd situation where perhaps I believe you are neglecting your responsibility to keep your nose out of my business, while you believes I am neglecting my responsibility to be responsible for your mistakes. This obviously doesn't work well at such a juncture, and as someone who lives in a village and does feel some level of responsibility to others in my village, but which is different than that I feel towards my family, I can say that this is an issue that arises pretty often and doesn't work well.

I'm here because my ancestors were torn from their culture, their people. Everything they knew. Because of this injustice, i a Canadian born to a Jamaican father; am trying to find out who my enslaved ancestors were. I'm sorry you feel (or felt 2 years ago) like there is something wrong with that.
