Thanks for sharing. I have thought about grades a lot. Being still new to the profession I find that making sure directions/rubrics need to be very clear. Which I struggle with but I am sure I will get better. On that participation note, I find it hard to get students talking and having discussion. For context, I teach U.S Government and put a focus on current events and I am finding it difficult to get more then two students engaging in class discussion. Just looking for other ways to have productive discussions without making it a participation grade. As always thanks for the video and food for thought.

I find that students need A LOT of support for discussion, even (especially?) at the high school level. When we have class discussions, I emphasize that their goal is to find out what others know and think. It's not necessarily about showing what YOU know, but about supporting others and showing your understanding of THEIR ideas.
