Let's Get Logical

Күн бұрын

Short introduction to the concept of argument in philosophy and logic. Arguments in critical thinking and essay writing are essentially the same. Indeed, logical argumentation in any field-from law, to science, to religion-will resemble the notion of argument presented here. In short, an argument is a piece of reasoning put into words. It's a matter of statements being organized into premises supporting a conclusion.

Good Sir. Can you explain in another video how argument differs from assumption and proposition?

Thanks for watching, WAJID. A _proposition_ is roughly the same as a statement. So the premises and conclusion of an argument are all propositions (statements). In logic, _assumption_ typically refers to the premises. Because the premises are the unsupported, starting points for the argument. You just _assume_ them in order to support the conclusion. Of course, in real life someone might challenge one of your assumptions (premises). But then you can give a new argument to support the assumption. In that case, the premise of your first argument would become the _conclusion_ of your second argument because you are now trying to provide rational support for a proposition (statement) that at first you put forward _without_ support (an assumption.) Hope this helps!
