Thanks for the video. I hear the same questions and concerns everyday too. I love that you are helping share what you know. Educating families is what I’ve enjoyed most over my 17 years in senior housing.

Hi Joe - thanks for doing this video. One thing that should be mentioned is that most ALs would not provide unlimited beer and alcohol, as that could cause negative interactions with meds and imbalance which could lead to falls. Usually alcoholic drinks are limited to 2 and only when such beverages do not negatively affect residents’ existing med regimens. Many residents are free to keep alcoholic beverages in their suites but as with everything, this is monitored by the care team to ensure that safety is tantamount.

Thank you so much for watching the video and for your feedback. I should have been more careful and precise with my comment about Happy Hour. I should have mentioned that residents need permission from their doctor to drink alcohol. And you are right! The drinks are normally limited to two! Thank you again!

That is the limit of drinks for our AL residents in Reno.

Thank you for the video. Could I ask if you know what the equivalents are in the UK? I think assisted living is more common in the US. Here, I think it may be called extra care housing, very sheltered housing, housing with care or supported housing.

Whats the general payment for assisted living communities?
@AssistedLivingAnswerMan2 жыл бұрын
Each building is different. There are many different levels and price points. But here in Northern New Jersey, a private-pay building starts at around $4,000 per month. Direct Medicaid buildings can be paid by Medicaid.

Can married couples live in memory care assisted living when the spouse is the caregiver but needs help in the caregiving?

Most buildings would be open to a conversation about this. As each case can be unique.

hello I have a question what do you think are some the most important design features that should be in a assisted living ?
@AssistedLivingAnswerMan2 жыл бұрын
Hello. Here are a few things. Sizable bathroom in case you need access with a wheelchair. Safe shower without a lip that you might trip on. Pull cords in your bathroom and apartment to get emergency help. Many residents complain when their apartment unit is too far from the elevator; they also get lost/confused if the building is too large.

After working in places like this myself . I'd never suggest anyone to put their sick parents in them.. .senior highrises even has problems. .with those coming in their homes when their out. .taking up their furniture , stealing, . Young women prostitutes themselves with old men.. . Slickster robo callers will call your phone, telling you that they are a social security consultant. . But they have nothing to do with social security.. . They are apart of a senior living aid filcilatity.. .those living in senior highrises can't even go out their aptments lest maintance, property managers come in . Tampering with food, stealing. . Going through their stuff. . They want to make you sick to push you into a senior living filcilaty

Those are terrible and sad stories/examples. There are definitely nicer places that do not have those problems.

Can an ALF(Assisted Living) take my Mom's LINK card when they are already getting funded by the state with her SS check? My mother qualified for Medicaid and the state sent her a LINK card for groceries. She has no need for the groceries since she stays at the assisted living place. However, the facility asked for this LINK card stating that this would also go to help pay for her meals. This bit of information was never given to me in the beginning of applying for Medicaid for my mother. Is this common for facilities to do this?

Assisted living is hospitality service. It's not a skilled facility those who need skilled nursing should not be placed in one. But that's the what has happened I worked in 4 facilities. If all you needed was meals laundry general upkeep medication reminders you would stay at home. Assisted living facilities will keep you as long as you can pay the bill. Assisted living doesn't require an LPN to pass out medication that can be done by a med tech with 3 days training you're being taken care of by AIDS only qualification is they have a high school diploma if you have dementia which only get to worse and all the physical and occupational therapy in the world is not going to help you. Skilled nursing facilities look like hospitals no carpet because the residents are extremely incontinent and carpet gets dirty and holds germs and bacteria I have never been in an assistant living facility where the carpet wasn't disgusting. Trying to pick somebody up and put them in a regular bed when they need a hospital bed and a hoyer lift. If the resident cannot communicate it's totally out of touch with reality do you honestly think that playing bingo is going to be entertaining for them because that's the only activity that is done in these places that and television. Dementia Parkinson's disease their mental disorders and should be treated as such that are not going to get better but only get worse and all the beautiful decor in the world doesn't mean anything to someone who doesn't even know their own name. My best advice is a living will be a DNR for a major stroke if you get a diagnosis of dementia go immediately on hospice. Or else you will pay over 10 grand a month to sit in wheel chair with a wet diaper all day in front of a television. The bottom line these are for profit organizations they're not charitable institutions their main goal is profit. They have good advertising campaigns to fool you into thinking that their main goal is your well being no it is not. If you still insist on going into one of these places don't look at the Google reviews look on indeed see what the employees of these places have to say it is never good.

Wow, thank you for sharing your insights into this. I agree with a common phrase, "The chandelier won't take care of your mother." I agree with some of the things you said, but not everything. There are some Assisted Living Companies (& locations) that operate at a much higher standard than others. And for many residents, Assisted Living was the right choice for them. But you gave me a lot to think about. Thank you again for sharing these details.

In short:/... Yes, I honestly believe this. But no one wants to listen to the non licensed person. I'm certified, &I plan on continuing w/ things. But meanwhile, here at the bottom, the staff is nothing but petty (prob conveniently enough..., idk) overcompensating, rude & projectile vomit. I guess honestly that never stops. Regardless of jobs. But like how is it this bad before I even get a chance to "level up.." But lawd these ppl picking their battles... It's really that serious? I can not imagine being that person wasting energy in those certain small type things. Bc I don't even think state cares. But manipulate it some more. Ppl will safe face all day though. & Maybe I should be less honest :/. But all I know is at least I don't have ongoing arguments w/ the mentally challenged. For the ppl who r supposed to "know better" idek what to say. I lose my angry momentum when I'm gone from Everyone. I walk into that place & it's like 😡😤 oh gah. Do u like wake up & just choose violence or wth is that? Maybe not always violence but still, wth is wrong w/ u? Do u not like peace? Ok but to the pt... when it comes to their living conditions, I hear it from every angle. I never know what to say. Yeah, I feel bad. But it's not my place... All I have to offer is compassion. But don't assault me for it either. . Also our facility really just added a chandelier. Someone was bugging me about a lightbulb today. I'm always supposed to be pulling ish out my *** apparently. *I'm not maintenance.

Hi Joe.. I know this might question might be strange.. Is there a way I can interact with people from the assisted livings despite being strangers? Can I visit someone I am not acquainted to? Thanks beforehand..

Hi Cristina. You would need to contact the Assisted Living Community to get permission and explain the reason for your visit. Thank you for the question.
