When I was a kid we called it rain; sometimes light, sometimes heavy. Calling it something other than rain makes it sound like something has changed when it hasn't, which is entirely the point.

@garyhaggquist740

A problem with evolving scientific terms? As was mentioned, the term "Pineapple Express" is a deceptively benign term that doesn't convey the potential damaging nature of what is now more accurately referred to as an "atmospheric river." They are now being rated similar to hurricanes using a 1-5 rating scale - from potentially beneficial to damaging.
@professorakiba434
@professorakiba434 10 ай бұрын
Actually no. Someone noticed that the moisture was behaving like a river in the sky and so came up with the term. We develop terms to best describe situations. Its normal. Detectives like you don't get that point because you are in downplay mode. Which is fine. Cest la vie when things get worse.

An atmospheric river would have brought heavy rain at low elevations, and heavy snow at high elevations in 1846. When heavy snow stranded the Donner Party.

So the reason it is called an “atmospheric river” is because the water rises from the tropics into the atmosphere and travels like a river to bc where it dumps as rain. Yes it’s “heavy rain” but the process that brings it is called an atmospheric river.

Hmmm, or hmmph? Cuz i thought an "atmospheric river" was when the transpiration mostly from a west-facing forested slope, here in BC, piles up over the mountain ridge to form a rain-cloud? Either way, maybe now it's being re-appropriated because we've desertified, AKA clearcut logged out too much of our forest, which causes a wrecking ball swing of droughts & floods & fires & temperature extremes too. Yes, forests have a stabilizing effect on our environment, so we should end clearcut logging cuz that would have a wonderful effect all around, upon our economy & ecology & restore seasonal norms too. Please heed this, ASAP!

Logging or not logging won’t change the weather, the trees grow here because of the heavy precipitation; we don’t have heavy precipitation because of the trees.
