What is an HMO?

A HMO is a medical plan that typically has a lower monthly cost than other types of plans, but does not give you as much freedom when choosing a doctor.
A Health Maintenance Organization typically costs less out of your paycheck than other types of plans, but doesn’t give you as many choices of doctors or specialists. With an HMO, you must designate a primary care physician who manages all of your care, and this doctor must give you a referral in order to go to any other specialist. You make a pre-defined payment, called a copay, with each doctor or specialist visit. These plans have lower monthly premiums, but limit your flexibility in choosing a provider.

One year after my employer switched from a PPO (I was in excellent health) to an HMO, I was totally disabled because a specialist my primary care doctor sent me to did something he shouldn't have done, and for the next year as I got sicker and sicker, my primary care doctor said nothing was wrong. I finally got into the VA Healthcare system and found out the primary care doctor had been lying to me the whole time. When we tried to sue, we found out you can't sue an HMO or its doctors because you signed an agreement to let some bean counter at an insurance desk practice medicine without a license. In 1997 Congress had to pass a law barring Medicare HMOs and their doctors from lying to patients about their condition. This only applied to Medicare patients, as Medicare falls under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), but they were and are allowed to lie to everyone else. I was lied to before 1997 and was not in Medicare. For your own sake, Google "HMO's & Gag Rules". If they weren't doing it Congress would not have had to pass a law. Humana's HMO took my life. If you value yours, stay away from HMOs. Now for the past 3 months I've been suffering with a pinched nerve in my neck (C6-C7), but my Medicare HMO (AvMed) won't approve my pain specialist to do a nerve block to diagnose the correct vertebra for an RF Oblation to relieve this excruciating pain. This is what you're in for if you sign up with an HMO. When they put you through this kind of agony, all because some bean counter won’t approve a procedure that your doctors says is necessary, you will wish for death, not just for yourself but for the insurance company making you suffer, and for the Congress that allows this to happen.😖🤕☠
