Aloha Lynn, I own three ipu but wanna have an Ipu Heke. Can you tell me the terminologies of the pa'i on ipu heke? Say U , te and the fingers fluttering on the ipu heke. I don't know the terminologies of them. Mahalo! Actually, I have subscribed long long ago.

I have shared my ipu with a drum circle in Chiloquin, OR. As usual, I meet one or more other Hawaii ex-patriots in every group. The member I met was originally from the Big Island. I spent my youth on Oahu from Nuuanu to Waianae.

Hi Lynn, I made my first Ipu heke from gourds bought from a farm in The Netherlands where I live. When I was younger I performed Hula without ever have been in Hawaii. And fell in love with your culture! I call myself "highly creative" and when I feel stuck I just play on my ipu heke to ground again. It is so relaxing to play on such a pure instrument. So I wan't to thank Hawaii for bringing the world a rich, pure and loving culture "mahalo nui loa iā 'oe" is it?

I acquired an ipu along with four pu' ili from facebook marketplace and introduced them to my general music classes in Indiana. I have lived and traveled in many parts of the world and want my students to experience the wonderful music from those places and more. This past summer I went to Mali and brought back a djembe and a balafone, traditional western african instruments. Thank you for you excellent demonstration. Hopefully, some day I will be able to visit your beautiful state and see the ipu and pu' ili used first-hand.

I do own one. I haven’t used it for along time. I don’t have any of the people I used to do hula with around any more. Ko Ma’i’ Ho’eu ‘eu I think is the name of the song. I could very well be wrong.

Thank you so much for video. This year we crafted ipu heke ole in our school of Hawaiian dance in Russia. It was a great experience for me. I named my ipu Ainokaia, meaning by that 'food for fish', because the special smell of the ipu was associated with my grandfather's fish food. He's passionate fisherman. Now I'm learning to play it. Thank you again!

Aloha Lynn, I really enjoyed watching this video. Many years ago I was privileged to learn hula in Hawaii and since coming home I have taught others what I was taught, in doing the basic hula steps I used the back of chairs as my ipu because I didn't know where to purchase one from in my home country however, a couple of years ago I was gifted an ipuheke however I have really learned a lot about the properties of the ipuheke/ipu through your video. I am grateful for your knowledge and the way you do your presentation. Mahalo.

Thank you for this video. I haven't got an ipu. My Kumu Hula used it for Kahiko. I love both Kahiko and Auana. Kahiko is so sacred and so important in hawaiian culture that I have a great respect for it. It was an great privilege to learn it in Paris with Halau hula o Manoa (unique Halau in France). I am an octogenarian and learned hula a few years ago. As I love percussion as well as dancing, I purchased an ipu from my teacher and enjoy playing the basic rhythm. Thank you for all your lessons. (I am a haole from California.)

My halau went to the gourd farm in fall room California. We picked our gourds and made our own ipu’s and ipuheke’s! I still have mine they last forever!

Polly, I would do a search for hula supplies on Maui. If not, there are ones you can order from Oahu. My Kumu was Arlene "Kaui" deSilva. My Hawaiian name is Naniuhane - given to me by my late kumu, which means "beautiful spirit." Some feel It is not pono to give yourself a Hawaiian name as traditionally names are given as a gift from others. However if you just translate your English into Hawaiian, that would be acceptable.

Aloha, this is just what I needed. Mahalo nui Loa. My cousin bought me one for my birthday a couple of years ago. I actually have a new addition to my collection which I recently got for my birthday this year. My cousin bought me an uli'uli red yellow. When she bought my ipu, I think she got just the right size. It feels like it fits in my hands pretty well. I have one question though. When you say, hold your hands like this, how do you mean? You did a very good job of describing it for the most part though. There are a few things that I didn't get like the motion you make as you tap the ipu.I was told by another hula teaching channel that when you tap the ipu, you have to kind of make a brushing motion as you tap it. How do you wrap the cord around your wrist correctly? I think mine fits on my wrist pretty easily without falling off. The other channel just teaches the very basics and some things like how to play ipu.

Aloha Cassie - Mahalo for you message. I actually hit the ipu with palm and fingertips, rather than brush, to get a good sound. To hold the ipu, you naturally grab it at the neck with your thumb and all fingers. Did you try to use your ipu yet?

I disagree. I have never seen any hula dancer play left-handed ipu, especially in a group. It would look ridiculous.

Aunty, that is true. When I teach my keiki dancers as a group, we paʻi with our right. Individuals could play with either hand if simply learning the paʻi.
