Very interesting - never heard of doing this to reduce NOx before. The high combustion temperature of CI engines is the other part of the reason NOx is a problem with diesel as gasoline engines don't burn as hot (Which is why they have lower efficiency). Plenty of modern gasoline engines are using delayed closing of the intake valves to give a higher expansion ratio than the compression ratio as a means of increasing efficiency, mostly in hybrid cars. It's known as the Atkinson cycle or the Miller cycle (If forced induction) in this context. Being able to turn it on and off on demand allows the engine to make full power when needed (At the expense of higher emissions) but cruise more efficiently, which is where the engine will run for most of its life in a truck.

Great video! Keep it going! Thank you !thank you ! But I have a ongoing flash “ghost” code no one can figure out.Code 95 which I have already replaced! But it’s doing the same low voltage! When truck is shut off, ECM resets! ECM will not retain code so cat can’t find anything wrong!I was hoping maybe you can shed some light on things!

Yes the plug connector tips open up especially the injectors as they have alot of voltage i just squeeze they back close for a tight fit and the engine stops missing

Oil pressure seems to be low and we have done a lot of checking. When we have the valve covers off there is oil shooting about 15 feet out of the iva housing oil ports.

Great explanation, thanks for the video. My only comment is your reference at the beginning to "Twin Turbos", these are actually Sequential or Series turbos. The other wrong reference that people use is "Compound Turbos" which is something else completely.

Hey Adept, I don't know if you'll be able to answer this on a future video, but I have a 1994 Navistar DT466 engine in my work truck. When I was put in this truck, it ran slow. But the engine was just rebuilt about 1-2 years prior. it still has paint on everything. After awhile the truck would barely make it up hills, so the mechanic at my dairy replaced the fuel filter and it ran great afterwards. It was all full of grease. That was about 2 months ago. Now in the past 3 weeks it has been lacking substantial power. Truck does not want to go from a stop. It has no giddy up. Clutch is good, injectors seem fine, engine runs fine but its just low on power, trucks . Now, it does fly down the highway still at about 75 MPH. I understand you only work on CAT engine but I figured the same principle would apply to about a majority of mechanical diesels. Thanks.

+acdcfanforever3 I am mostly a Cat guy, but the first thing to check is the fuel pressure. Find out what the spec would be for that engine and get a gauge on the fuel pressure and see what it is doing when it is low on power.

Yeah. Hasn't acted up since. It was full of grease for some reason again. Maybe the driver who had the truck last was fed up with the truck and wanted it off his route so he tried "killing" it. That's really the only way we can get another truck around here. But it's been great for the past several months. Best running truck I've had in my 6 years here.

i was wondering how often these go out i have a 06 c15 and have replaced 4 out of 6 in the last year in a half and my truck had a inframe done a year in a half ago 3 said not responding and the 4th said current high wasnt sure if i need to be looking into something other than just replacing the actuators if it might be a bigger problem

Josh, I have an MXS engine that breaks up/stumbles/white smokes when in cold mode under load when boost pressure is high. No fault codes, IVA system test passed, runs great once warmed up. To me it sounds and feels like either the IVA’s or jakes are activating on their own without being commanded by the ECM…have you seen this? How the heck do I troubleshoot this?

I'm having an issue with my 2004 BXS c-15 acert. When engine is idle it has a rough idle that comes and goes. Watching the cat id that's on my dashboard, I can go to the screen and watch, when it is running smoothly it shows around 1.1 gallons per hour and when it start running rough it drops to 0.6 gallons per hour. Any ideas?

I have a 2006 MSX in a Freightliner Columbia with code 92 on cylinder 2. I thought I was just going to change the VVA and harness and my problem would be solved, until I watched your video. How would you suggest checking oil flow and the oil pressure sensor? If the oil pressure sensor is bad would that show up as a different code or can I still have just one actuator not responding?

I think you have it a little wrong on the reason Cat put IVAs on their ACERT engines. Have you ever asked yourself why there is always so much soot in the intake of IVA engines? After all they don't have EGR, so the intake should be clean, right? Well...I have gotten unofficial confirmation that Cat all along have had EGR on their engines via the IVA system. They open the intake valves on the exhaust stroke, which pushs the exhaust gas thru the intake side of the head to another cylinder on the intake stroke. It turns out Cat has had EGR all along, they just refused to admit it. The EGR all happens inside the head via the IVAs.

385-1 code... Previously had overhead and #1 injector replaced. Immediately after leaving shop I topped full boost and got check engine light so with ET was able to get direct PMI code above. I’ve replaced IVA oil sensor first, checked control valve and seems to be in good working condition. Replaced external wiring harness and internal as well. Only thing that stands out after all this is when removing both sensor and control valve, the oil that comes from housing. It doesn’t continue to pour out before replacing either part but has me wondering if check valve is staying open not allowing pressure to be regulated properly. Wondering if next move should be replace IVA housing or solenoids.... With valve covers off and engine running I’m not noticing unusual oil leaks within the system. Just odd how this happened after replacing a faulty injector and overhead ran. Any thoughts? Thanks!

+Jesus Benitez It could be the wiring to the actuator itself and not necessarily the actuator solenoid. Is the code an electrical fault or a not responding properly code? If it's a not responding you could have a mechanical problem like the IVA setting.

The 379 I drive has bxs c15. My max normal boost pressure is 48 psi (all rpms). For some reason, Im not max at 48, but 35 instead when ever I drive 1700 rp. Normal rpm, it would blow 27 psi. And no codes popping out. Could IVA done this?

Can anybody help please. I have c15 accert with tapping noise. Changed injectors. Ran over head nothing looks broke everything looks perfect. But one of my iva housings has a spray of oil coming out of the little screw that looks like a ball is inside it. The others just weep out but the middle one sprays will this cause a tapping noise.

Why do shops charge you for doing an over head when they replace injectors. They have to do this any way right. You remove the rocker shaft and rockers before getting to the injectors.

+Rickasurus Rex Someone has programmed the ECM to be an engine with no IVAs and has ran it like that. It shouldn't hurt anything running it like that, but it is technically illegal because the IVAs are emissions components.

+Robert Squall An IVA code can cause a derate, which will reduce power and boost. The IVA itself isn't causing it, just the check engine light. Assuming you don't have a miss caused by an IVA sticking open.

Have a C-15 Acert. MXS 45475. It was overhauled roughly 400,000 miles ago. Boost and fuel pressures are great. Runs fine on flat ground hit any kind of hill even empty and it loses speed. I deal with Cummins and Detroit’s. Kinda out of my league when it comes to cat. Any idea’s?

Question I removed valve cover to check for any leaks on the housing and I do see oil coming from top and bottom port about 3/8 diameter looks like un Allen wrench.is this normal ?.I do get a 93 flash code. C-15 engine

+Jaime Garcia Without seeing it its hard to say. Check the other housings to compare, if one is leaking and the other isn't, then you have a problem.

+Dan Bulzan So I looked it up on Sis and Cat doesn't list the temperatures and ohm readings, it just does the voltage readings when it's disconnected and connected. So I ohmed out the sensor on a C15 we have here and the shop temp was 72 degrees Fahrenheit and it was at 1987 ohms. That is the best I can do.

Thank-you for looking into it, i did the same reading 1.9k and i notice a big drop in resistivity with temperature increase. Tomorrow im planning to test a step grade switch with different values in resistivity ...hopefully ill get my turbo boost back. I'll let u know. Thank-you again...

Variable valve actuation is used to increase air flow is cylinder not to decrease...and (i kind of feel) the explanation is also wrong (the explanation about working of iva/vva), valve is kept open to allow more air into cylinder (its because of inertia) the pressure inside cylinder will still be negetive even while piston starts moving up due to high rpm (strictly my opinion though)

My check engine light came on and the flash code was My oil pressure sensor voltage high or low. I just got the sensor and will be changing it when I get home in a couple days. This afternoon my engine brake lost cylinders. Can the two things be related?

Hi Adept Just wanted to clarify something. When the IVA keeps the air intake valve open during the time the piston starts moving upwards, which place or port does the nitro oxide gas escapes out of? The exhaust valve would have closed before the intake process started. Thanks Really enjoy watching your videos.

The IVA allows the piston to push some of the air back into the intake manifold. It effectively lowers the compression ratio of the engine, making the mixture burn at a lower temperate and reducing NOX at certain points in the load curve. The NOX itself isn't generated until the mixture burns, and it's pushed out the exhaust. NOX is the biggest emissions problem for almost any diesel, and the hardest to fix.

Have 07 Pete 379 c13 getting code 92 changed both actuators for number 1 and 2 actuators how do I clear code in system unhooked batterys over night hooked up scan truck without starting and code still there any help is appreciated
