Finally an oil catch video that explains why it would be need on the vent side also .......

Another thing to add to the fact that it is a performance addition is that some catch cans are made of aluminum. There is a reason why manufacturers use aluminum in computer heat sinks; it is because aluminum is excellent for transferring heat. So not only are you capturing the oil vapors that get sucked back into your engine, but you are actively cooling the hot air coming from the crankcase back into your intake manifold.

I have a 2003 Neon SRT-4. I put a catch can on it. I realized when boosted the manifold pressure was no longer vacuum it was boosted. Making air flow in the opposite direction through the pcv hose. It was actually a boost leak so I put a one-way check valve in the hose that normally sucks air out of the crank case and I noticed an increase in horsepower. catch cans work great for normally aspirated cars but be careful when you have boost the air will run in the opposite direction from the positive charge toward the engine and in my case the way the valve cover was designed. the pcv is at the passenger side of the valve cover and the hose that goes to the airbox is on the drivers side. When you have boost the air flow is reversed. The air goes in to the valve cover on the passenger side and goes out on the driver side getting oil in the airbox even with having the catch can. Since using the one way check valve my airbox is dry. Even when new and 100% stock oil was gathering in my airbox. I wish I new this when I picked my car up at the dealership from day one. I was missing hp for 18 years! The addition of the one-way check valve to stop air from going in to the crank case made a much improved difference in acceleration over having a boost leak.

I have a question. In December I purchased an older Toyota Solara 2004 from a private individual. Due to no affordable transportation. It had the dreaded 2azfe engine. I have owned it for four months and do only local driving since I am disabled. Turns out its an oil consumer, I go through a quart each month. It still has plenty of pep and no visible oil leaks. I was going to put a catch can on the outlet of the pcv valve before it goes into the intake manifold. But I heard you mention if oil is getting past the rings a second catch can could be used on the fresh air intake where it goes into the valve cover. Please elaborate on how its done and what it can accomplish and how more oil escaping can be collected there. Thanks.

can the oil affect your catalytic converter and the catch can gets rid of the oil that would normally burn and go through the exhaust and get trapped in the catalytic converter causing po420
@3point86 жыл бұрын
too much oil can certainly effect the cats, but usually oil won't cause a P0420 or P0430 code. The cats get pretty hot and anything that might not burn in the combustion process will usually burn off on the cat. Not to say I haven't seen cats clogged with oil and sludge. But yes, a catch can will prevent the oil that normally gets into the combustion process from doing so which means less chance of causing issues with the cats.
@3point86 жыл бұрын
On another note though, if you have enough oil getting through to cause a P0420 code, you have other issues. Possible bad rings or valve seals/guides and a catch can won't help those problems.
@koreymayo88845 жыл бұрын
Your car probably just has a lot of miles and needs a new cat by now, but if you would've had an oil catch can the entire life of the car then I'm sure the cat converter would have lasted much longer.

@ravenouslove14 жыл бұрын
if you run a valve cover breather while your pcv is still part of the vacuum system youl cause unmetered air to enter the system.

Hi mate. Great explanation about the oil catch can. I have a question. I am running an ls2 408 forged high compression stroker motor with ls3 heads on E85. Motor is making 510rwhp. Because of the camshaft overlap and running richer on E85 there is sometimes a cloud of white smoke from the exhaust when the throttle is floored. It's fuel vapour. Would the catch can reduce the fumes and vapour as well as the oil going into the intake?
@Passkill5 жыл бұрын
It should reduce the oil going into the intake but it wont change the fuel vapor out the tail pipe

I have a 2018 challenger. I got the oil catch can I have to install it BUT I don't know if this will void the warranty or not. Any idea?
@3point87 жыл бұрын
Warranties are a tricky thing. In general it's always best to go back to stock when taking the car in for service. A lot of dealers are cool and won't care much about mods like an intake or a catch can. In some cases, catch cans can be hidden (intentionally or not) and the techs won't even notice them. Most techs know what they do and won't say anything, but it all depends on what you're taking it in for and how strict the dealer is. If you're going in for an oil change, then probably not a big deal. If you going because the engine blew, I would remove anything and everything. Your extended warranty providers, however, can be another story all together. I've stood in line while the service manager was on the phone being told the customers policy was canceled because he installed coil overs. You will want to determine how strict your extended warranty provider is and handle things accordingly. IF you're not sure, just walk into the service dept and ask them directly. Don't give them your name and do it at a time when you don't need to service your car.
@3point87 жыл бұрын
I will say that on the topic of smog, it's possible that you will fail inspection with a catch can, especially in California since it's changing the factory emissions system. So you'll for sure want to remove before getting inspected.

I had a question if you also want to catch vent side pressure do you have to use two catch cans or can you just route both the pcv and the vent side into one side of a catch can and then into the manifold from the other side or does this cause a pressure discrepancy
@3point87 жыл бұрын
In most cases using a single can will result in a vacuum leak and will eventually end up in with a check engine light. I've personally tried various single can setups using check valves, but in the end they did not work out. Your best bet is to just use 2 catch cans.

serious question. i installed ADDW1 can with 3/8 lines beacuse my PCV was 3/8 in my 1999 honda accord due to some excessive blowby...my MPG's tanked soon after, checked for vacuum leaks, none to be found even with "smoke" test. first why did i lose mileage and second how?
@koreymayo88845 жыл бұрын
Strange. Is it a 2.3 liter accord? I'm going to put a can on my 2002 soon. It should increase fuel economy. Maybe something else went wrong at the same time. Make sure your PCV valve is working properly and if not replace it and make sure your oil catch can doesn't restrict the air flow.

Depends on your level of skill. I personally use an oil water separator for an air compressor. But I had to build my own brackets. The available cans for purchase have already solved the placement and provide brackets which makes it super easy to install. For the most part, any catch can will work, it's just the install.

Eh not entirely true...Sonata 2.0t...the PCV goes into the catch can, CCV has a breather (formerly connected to intake tube)...vacuum under light load comes from the manifold...as throttle increases vacuum then comes from intake...both intake and manifold are connected to dual inlet OCC keeping the vacuum source from on PCV outlet and the fresh air source from the CCV breather filter...with this set-up you don't need an OCC on the CCV side
