Computers have been around a lot longer than PCs. You have to go back at least the 1950's to get the first operating systems. The first OS's with which I worked were those designed for the IBM 360 system in the late 1960's. And even then they supported multi-tasking and had true memory management that protected one user's data from other processes.

@zeroisgawd14427 жыл бұрын
So basically Windows, OS X, or linux uses bootstrapt, which goes into the automatic booter of the CPU and then as soon as you interact with the system it sends out requests made out of binary code to the CPU every millisecond to enable you to move the cursor and more and the system uses graphical design to display images onto the video card. then you can open multiple programs with multitasking which is pretty self-explanatory. It sends out more requests to the cpu in order for the system to open up multiple tabs of things.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I am old enough to remember the C/PM and MSDOS operating systems. Back in those days any program could access all the hardware directly. The programs did this to speed things up on these slow computers. About the only thing the operating system was used for was disk drive input and output of files.

WayZHC In a sense the kernel is what defines the OS. It does all the important work. Everything else is just thrown into the package for convenience for the end user.
@Niosus9 жыл бұрын
WayZHC I know very well that a kernel alone is useless, just like a car is useless without a steering wheel. That doesn't mean that the collection of Linux distros has a lot of things in common. There are a lot of general things you can say that hold true for nearly all UNIX-like OSes. Anyway. Who really cares about the "overal" comparison. Use the right tool for the right job, use what works for you.
@LeonoraTindall9 жыл бұрын
The OS is the kernel plus the libraries and tools required to interact with it. That may or may not mean GUI, but Linux by itself is definitely not an OS. It has no interface at all, not even a shell.
@LeonoraTindall9 жыл бұрын
Quinn Wood If that were the definition, GNU/Hurd would have no operating system since any part of it can crash and the OS will recover.
@LeonoraTindall9 жыл бұрын
Quinn Wood, BSD is an operating system, Linux is not. Linux is a bare kernel. GNU/Linux is an operating system.

Linux as fast as possible? Like what makes it special, pro's and cons. Also, could you please do a 1 month with linux thing like you did with OSX?
@HeyItsHades2 жыл бұрын
what makes most linux distros fast is because the kernel and OS are very minimal. They hardly have any bloatware to slow down the machine. They run what is necessary and that is it. Further, there is constant active development on the linux kernel done by millions of people everyday so they can tweak, and tweak, and tweak code the maximum performance.

About a year late, and I don't have Windows, so I cannot check for sure, but probably not. Any file managers worth their salt don't use any CPU when they are in the background, only a little bit of RAM. Unless you are running out of RAM on your system, it won't really give you any performance boost.

Just a question, I don't own a Mac so I don't know, do Macs have drivers? I watched this certain video once asking professors of a certain University about Macs and PCs, and Mac owners generally loved their machines because it didn't need to install any "confusing drivers", just run and go.
@skifree09 жыл бұрын
ApexPredator_ yes there are drivers, like any modern operating system. The only difference is the update channel goes through apple rather than the user, which actually leads to the confusion of whether OSX has drivers to begin with. Because apple hardware is typically very vertically controlled, all drivers are prepackaged into os updates rather than a separate installation. its tightly controlled and certified. so to answer your question both claims are correct, there IS a driver, but you still can just "run and go" as its all preloaded into the os.
@USER694739 жыл бұрын
ApexPredator_ search about hackintosh installation and you will know =)
@xplinux229 жыл бұрын
ApexPredator_ Oh, they have drivers all right. Anyone who has built a Hackintosh rig knows the pain of loading the right *.kext so the OS doesn't go belly-up if the hardware doesn't match Apple's specifications 100%. The reason drivers are rarely a problem for Mac users is that the hardware it is distributed with is tightly controlled and the OS comes preloaded with all of the drivers it needs, out of the box. Unfortunately, it is literally impossible for OS X talk to anything unsupported by Apple, and it will fail very noisily if you don't carefully and diligently select your hardware beforehand, as Apple provides no fallback drivers and no safety guarantees. Third party official drivers are basically nonexistent for Macs, and Apple clearly states the illegality of writing and freely redistributing them without explicit approval. However, that certainly doesn't stop the Hackintosh community from patching and writing custom *.kext drivers of their own so people can use OS X with the latest whiz-bang video cards and whatnot.
