4 yrs ago I had a THR. I went to all the classes beforehand and the anesthesia was never discussed. The day of surgery the DR came in and said his preference was a spinal. I was shocked! I had 2 c-sections and had spinals and disliked the numbness. No one had mentioned this to me. I refused to have it. I thought the DR was hostile and he acted like I was making a big mistake. Now I'm facing a TKR and I'm afraid the DR will try to force me again to have a spinal. I did just fine under the general anesthesia. I don't want to battle a DR again.

Why one can not eat or drink before spinal anesthesia as its a local anesthesia and can not affect the reflexes or respiratory muscles

I’ve had it done both ways for hip. I wish I would have not taken the blocker. Now I’m taking strong pain pills 6 weeks latter. Another person I know had blocker for a back surgery It turned out a nightmare. I don’t know why they push to do the blocker. Everyone’s body Reacts differently Do your own research What’s best for you. Pain really sucks. First surgery was awesome with no blocker. If you did have the blocker And are suffering with pain Use ice pack where they gave the shot. And where your having pain. U can use a ten unit. For me I will try placing tens unit On back and on front thigh at the same time, this is what my chiropractor suggested. He also suggested U can soak in Epsom salt bath to draw out the bad toxins. Once the wound has healed. I hope this information will help you.

Im having surgery in 12 days and will be having a spinal anaesthesia and a general anaesthetic together for the op. The spinal is suppose to b good for post surgery pain.

spinal for total joint is preferred over general anesthesia for many things that are evidence based, e.g. cognitive health, pain control, blood loss, deep vein thrombosis ... etc. there are LOTS of papers both in anesthesia and orthopedic journals that demonstrate this over and over again. disappointed at outdated information in this video
