What is Anthropology? In this weeks video, I will be sharing what anthropology is and why it is important. As the study of humans, anthropology is an important field that many people want to learn about today. What else do you guys want to know? Let me know in the comment section down below!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am a recent UCLA Anthropology graduate on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

I've always liked to write about fictional universes where cultures grow and mix and creates new cultures with new languages and everything like that. I love to read about past societies and the history of nations, how they formed, how they've mixed cultures with other nations, how languages are developed by different populations throughout time. I've just enrolled on an anthropology major while writing my first book with my own fictional universe with various languages and cultures created from scratch where I imagined all the process of evolution, from hunter-gatherer groups to nations. I hope someday I can publish the book, meanwhile I will stick to the anthropology studies, and hopefully this will improve the story!

I’m stuck between anthropology and sociology, I also am interested in writing and have a journalistic and photography/film education. One part of me is saying humans and society interests you study it! Then another says document it then everyone else including you will subconsciously study it from a philosophical area. Then another part is highly political due to seeing how society really works and its atrocities and wants to change things but charity work and politics degrees don’t actually change things. I always thought I have more of a creative not scientific mind so maybe anthropology isn’t for me but you never know till you try. I’m well and truly stuck.

Im a recent high school graduate living in Australia, and I’m just about to start my first year at uni, I’m double majoring in English and anthropology, I love reading and writing about mythology and history of humanity, and I feel there are lots of benefits of an English major learning how to conduct research and study literature, but I adore anthropology as well, and specifically researching culture and mythology, here’s hoping I can do it and not fail👍

I graduated from (English) Linguistics in 2016 and didn't have the courage to apply for master's degree or anything, I just wanted to have a job and "start" my life. So, I got my teaching certificate and started teaching English. It's been 8 years now, I DO NOT want to keep up with teaching English and I've realized that all the books I buy and read in one breath are anthropology books. I love doing researches, reading and thinking about it. So, I decided to take a leap of faith, quit my job this summer, stick to private lessons for income and apply for anthropology master's programme. I really want to study on linguistics&culture fields-if they accept me... I've been studying introduction level books and watching videos. Thanks to my degree, I'm familiar with most of the notions. I hope it works out well... I want to go back to academy and study anthropolgy so bad. I just wanted to share, thank you for the videos

It seems to me that there can be a massive difference between what im learning as an anthropology student in Guatemala and what people in europe or the US or África might learn, for example: we are constantly reminded of how our profession has been used to colonize cultures that were considered inferior, and how is it that anthropologists tend to have an eurocentric view of what is exotic and what is normal, what is developed and what not. Im just guessing we are all receiving different perspectives

Hi! Yes, i'm joining to this answer as well as the one above from @ElTarotdeAndy . I'm an argentinian anthropological student and as i listen to you i remember my classes are filled with other authors, other notions and perspectives that are more centered in Latin America. There is a huge generation of latin-american anthropologists such as Restrepo from Colombia and Grimson from Argentina that are really far from this "Four fields" conception of anthropology. I love your project and i'd like to do something similar too. Maybe we should get connected and interact our different experiences coming from such differing academic and geopolitic places 😊 i'd really like it

It is really lovely that you would like to learn more about anthropology - arguably any 'human' science is anthro (human) ology (study of/science), so you're already doing it, I'd say. Of course, the enshrined field of 'anthropology' is a great field to dive into.

I'm from Malaysia..about subfield in Anthropology,my Professor said there are different between Americans Anthropology subfield and Britain Anthropology subfield..as Malaysia was colonised by Britain once, so most of our field of studies are based on Britain's education.. And as i remembered, in Britain's education, Archaeology field was not under Anthropology studied, but under History field.. And Rather than use cultural Anthropology, we use terms of Social Anthropology that have so wide and broad subfield under it.. i was graduated 2015 so forgive me if there's mistake in my explanation.. I'm myself love collaborate between Anthropology and mythology, urband legend and folklore where i studied how folklore have shape the culture, religion and worldview of the culture.. most Folklorist study more through literature, but for me, Folklore also shaped human life especially the human culture in past... but in my heart, I love all about Anthropology... i am seeking job in museums, so wish me luck...

Hello Alivia! Thanks for another wonderful video. I think is important to mention that the four field division comes from the North American tradition established by F. Boas. In that sense, there is no one single Anthropology but multiple anthropologies that differ in their fields of study. I like the definition that the Colombian anthropologist Eduardo Restrepo provides: “Anthropology is what anthropologists DO”. Therefore, the study of humans precedes the institutionalization of anthropology. Like the chroniclers in the Americas when they were describing their encounters with new cultures.

Great video. Very much appreciated. There should be a whole new sub category of anthropology that studies human behaviour developed by technological advancements. How the internet has created a completely new form of inter-communication leading to the insight of different cultures and backgrounds all conversing in the one pot. Anyways 🧐 I’m more interested in the cognitive aspect of it all. I.e. the development of the ego vs group mentality. Through the concept of evolution; cognitive, cultural, biological etc. Can we as Homo Sapiens collectively reach a sate of complete cognitive synchronicity. A somewhat utopian society. Also, how can we change the way we think as a collective, in the hope to make more positively conscious decisions that will incontrovertibly affect the future. What would they be classified under? I also absolutely love learning about our paleo ancestry. It’s so fascinating! How did we get to where we are based on the complete chance of it all. An unfolding story that we may never know the end of 😅

Άνθρωπος. In modern Greece, you can usually hear a not exact or scientific etymology of the word, but still a very attractive one. The myth goes that the word is a combination of two words. The word άνω and θρώσκω. The first word means ''up'' and the second one is a form of the word ''look''. In english it could be translated as the one who walks and looks upwards''. It implies the effort and struggle of man to reach God, to be united with Him. Man can not do it. He is spiritually dead and unable to find out God. But, thanks be to God, He did it for us. He was incarnated and came and lived with us, taught us, was sacrificed for us, was buried for us, was risen for us and He gives us life and forgiveness in word and sacraments. Thank you for the video, Alivia.

Thank you for the amazing introduction. I really love anthropology but there aren't any undergraduate courses on the subject here in China, so I'm currently majoring in architecture, and I hope to make a transfer in graduate school. I know there's a branch called architectural anthropology (not sure if that's the right term) but as a freshman I really have no idea how to relate one to the other, how can I create more insight into anthropology with my undergraduate study. I'm in a general state of confusion and would really like some advice😢 p.s. I wonder what's the name of that ethnography you mentioned because I was deeply inspired by a Chinese anthropologist and I wonder if his works made their way into the syllabus of foreign universities too😂

Very interesting! I am interested in reading about studies that compare between societies that are different in morality. For example, those that drink alcohol and those who dont; those who uphold marriage before consummation and those who don't. A study that outlines the ill-effects of gambling on a people and other than that such as modesty in dress Those who have in their lives restrictions and limitations they don't trangress as compared to those who live without standards. Please inform me of anything I can read about this. I liked this video and I want to learn about Applied Anthropology. Sorry for being long winded

I need to choose either a double major or a minor to go with CSD in my school.
