Great breakdown! Thank you very much. I wish you included ProRes RAW in the graphs, though! Thanks a lot!

If the original file was recorded in h265, 10 bit is their any reason to encode any more than pro RES LT. Thanks for the great Video.

ProRes 422 would preserve more detail especially in complex scenes with gradients, textures and other fine details. It also handles color correction better. The trade-off is the file size which is significantly larger compared to ProRes 422 LT.

What would you suggest I run my iPhone 16 pro max ? For the best quality video but not take all my GB haha 😂,, I just got me a SSD but i use my iPhone mostly to save them there for editing or on the go .. please help me out with a solution that includes the ProRes

Are you shooting the videos on your iPhone? ProRes would give you better quality if you’re doing lots of color grading or visual effects. The downside is that the file sizes get out of hand pretty quickly, especially with longer videos. For editing on the phone I would personally stick to the standard HEVC codec, unless I wanted something super cinematic with maximum quality. But in that case I’d be editing on a computer anyway.

I came to this video because I want to upload much better quality KZbin videos to my channel and I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and I noticed it looks pretty good and I noticed that the memory is much much different from ProRes and I’m trying to figure out what would be the best settings to use Pro Rez with then use my MacBook Pro to edit it to look really good on KZbin. Just not sure if it’s worth it because it uses a lot of memory. And I’m not the smartest person when it comes to stuff like this, but I really like good quality in depth, vibrant videos.

I haven't tested shooting ProRes on my iPhone yet, but generally speaking it can help you with editing and color grading. The tradeoff obviously is that your file sizes are going to be pretty massive. Most iPhone users are usually fine without ProRes - it may make your footage 5% better, but it will take up 10x more storage and slow down your file transfers. I would maybe experiment with short clips - shoot one in ProRes, one in the standard H.264/H.265 format. Run them through your editing/coloring process and see if there's a noticeable difference. Even if you choose to use ProRes, the final file you export and upload on KZbin can usually be mp4. Helps with upload times, and looks just as good 99% of the time.

@ OK thank you I’ll have to look into that. I usually just record videos in 4K on my iPhone with some decent settings then add a little bit of color and sharpness on my MacBook Pro then upload it to KZbin.

That's my process too - shoot in 4K, do a subtle color pass in Davinci Resolve and the end result is usually pretty great.
