Art according to St. Thomas is something which the maker makes-- "make well." Therefore it differs from science which is something that "we know" and habit which is something "to do." Making differs from doing in the sense that it creates a subject, doing does not create it merely gives an action of the subject therefore "doing" has something to do with the maker and "making" has something to with the creation. Art, Science, Habit are similar when we class them as actions of our being but differ in terms of their end or purpose. The distinction of Art as an action of "making" could also be proven by the three divisions of Art, that is liberal art which in modern times, we call as language and mathematics. The second division is servile art, this is the art of service i.e. Carpentry, stonemasonry, public service and the like. The third division are fine arts which is generally classified in metaphysics as the pursuit of beauty i.e. music, painting, drawing, sculpture and the like. All these divisions creates something. Art in Latin is Ars, which is derived from the word Artus which means precepts or rules. Latin thinkers believed that to create something we must have a set of rules in order to create them, a proper procedure of making it. A stonemason could not apply its rules in carpentry because it does not work with stone but with wood, that would be ridiculous.
