I actually took bio anthropology cause I’m obsessed with the first civilizations and our developed characteristics. I hope to apply my understanding of our past to a career in political sciences.

I used to be a STEM major, following career paths that would end up in Computer Science, Mathematics, or even physics in a way. I got super burnt out about two semesters left, and a friend recommended that I checked out Anthropology. After about a semesters' worth of cultural anthropology, I took my first "intro to biological anthropology" course, and I was absolutely hooked. I fell in love with the fossils, particularly Lucy (a. afarensis). For me, being able to have my interests in remaining in the STEM field, and also being able to contribute to our understanding of our past, is incredibly interesting. I'm currently researching MA and PhD programs in support of this. I'd love to follow in the footsteps of some of the great people who have contributed to the field like Dr. Briana Pobiner, Dr. Lee Berger, and even Tim White amid his controversies.

That sounds so cool! It's always good to have people to look up to (and sometimes media "controversies" are blown way out of proportion to get clicks - Tim White is a professional who has written an excellent book on human bone identification).

Hello, Professor Kinkella, I am from China, and my major is physical anthropology. As you can see, physical anthropology is still used in China. I am the first student in my school's physical anthropology program, so my resources are limited. Recently, I have been reading Jane Buikstra's Standards for data collection from human skeletal remains.Are these collection standards and tables still in use?

What should I do if I want to study both biological and social (cultural) anthropology? I haven't found any General anthropology degree unfortunately
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology 3 жыл бұрын
In the beginning, following either path is fine. Usually, the more "general" anthro degree is a BA, not a BS. As you figure out which one you like more, you can focus there. You don't have to truly focus on one or the other until graduate school. Start by taking the classes that fulfill requirements on both sides. Just keep going - it will all work out!

Loved this video , planning to start bachelor's degree in anthropology, but am scared I just studied basic biology , and really concerned what will I do with this degree . Are there any scope
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology 5 жыл бұрын
Anthropology has no prerequisites, meaning the fact that you studied basic biology will only help you! There are all sorts of things that people do with anthropology degrees besides becoming anthropologists, professors, or teachers. I've seen people with anthropology degrees become anything from a lawyer to a chef! You might also check out my videos on college (on my KZbin channel - several of them start with the number 6) to help out with you decision. I can do another video on anthropology careers soon - thanks for watching!

so in part 2 is when they talk about neanderthals? should the definition of Biological anthropology include the study of humans and related species?
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology 4 жыл бұрын
It's the study of humans at its base. "Related species" gets a little over-generalized for my taste, because where do you draw the line? "Our direct ancestors" makes better sense, and includes Neanderthals.
@Ddstairclimber
@Ddstairclimber 4 жыл бұрын
@@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology ya one has to draw the lien somewhere. Any species that can produce viable offspring with anatomically modern humans should be part I would imagine that is where the line should be drawn, but I see your point of our ancestors ( non africans humans crossing with neanderthals) making them our ancestors as well

We are not apes,, even tho we share common things in our DNA with other animals doesn't mean that we are direct relation to that animal...All animals share some kind of DNA but there are prime aspects of DNA that gives us the result if we are actually related or not.
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology 4 жыл бұрын
There are two things here that you have incorrect. 1. We are apes. 2. The more similar DNA is between one species and the next, the closer they are related.
@GuidetteExpert
@GuidetteExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Kinkella Teaches Archaeology We are not apes, DNA of a tree is 90% similar to a human & banana is 60% & many other things on earth! So DNA doesnt say really which spices have a common ansestor so important traits are looked at such as interbread ability & brain function capability. We come from our own link but apes are stated being our cousins because of their body functional trait. But our brains are different so humans & neanderdals and denisovens are related to a common ansestor because of the ability to interbread and brain function. Right now its just a theory that people are cousins of apes but according to evidance of old history, brain size, ability of it compared to other spices and overall evolution, we have a taller type of humans in the past..Neanderdals & Denisovens also give a strong evidance of that... people are still looking for a missing link.
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology 4 жыл бұрын
@@GuidetteExpert We are all apes. You are simply wrong, and the "evidence" you cite shows that you do not understand biology or science. It is completely obvious that humans are apes (look at your own hands). People who argue that they are not apes are either ignorant of biology or pushing an agenda. I recommend reading the book "Why Evolution is True" by Coyne - it does an excellent job of explaining evolution. So does any introductory textbook in Biological Anthropology. After reading any of those books, or watching the excellent "Cosmos" series with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, it should be much clearer.
