It’s more like this: a Bitcoin is created when a computer GUESSES the correct “password.” There’s no mathematical way to figure out the password so you simply have to guess over and over again. Who creates the password? An algorithm called a Hash Function creates the password. Think of it like a sausage maker. You put some chunks of meat (aka data) into one end and a uniformly shaped sausage comes out the other (this is the password or the hash). The idea of hashing was born out of the science of cryptography - hence the term “cryptocurrency” It’s very easy to turn data into a hash using an algorithm, but it’s currently impossible to mathematically work the problem backwards. For example, it’s very easy to calculate 3*4*1000 = 12000, but if I just give you the number 12000 and ask you to figure out how I got to that number, there is no mathematical formula for solving that problem. Therefore it’s impossible to mathematically calculate. HOWEVER, it’s totally possible to guess the right answer. Doesn’t mean it’ll be easy though. Here’s a demonstration: 284000. How did I get this number? 284*1000? 2839998 + 1? 568000 / 2?? Nope. Keep guessing. You get the idea :) The computers that can make the most guesses per second have the highest chance of guessing the password and winning the reward for that round.

But he is right in that the bank is a trusted third party and is utterly corruptable as those tasked with keeping it in check are corruptable. Bitcoin relies on math, not people. Also your bank can freeze your account. If you have your keys, nobody can stop you moving your bitcoin.

it does not work like that. Say you have 100 hashes or assume for this example 100 numbers from 1-100. A range is set which is updated regularly by all of miners in the world (decentralized) and say the current range is 51-60. So what all miners do is try and guess a hash value between 51-60. If they do get it in range they have guessed it correctly and they win or else the trial and error continues. it might sound very simple right now but just imagine the over all range of trillions of hashes and an acceptable range of a billion hashes. That's where the guessing part comes in play and why it is so difficult.

Also, so much for "decentralization". Some guy created a program that creates more and more bit coins as more and more users participate. Just like real money, the value of individual bit coins are affected by how many or how little there are in circulation. So basically, one guy can control the value and quantity available. That doesn't sound like decentralization to me.

The problem for me is this: In all the videos I've seen for beginners, this being no exception, what is explained is the overall *concept* of Bitcoin - how it is decentralised etc. I have no trouble understanding the benefits - the concept. I have trouble understanding how to actually interact with Bitcoin online...at its simplest, which buttons to press and in what order!! - "This is what you DO"!!

@@99Bitcoins I know this video is older, but Iv never even questioned in my own head what is Bitcoin es I heard it and just thought people placed gold in like a safety deposit box account and could buy things spending an amount that however much gold they had came to! Lol well I'm a stay home mom homeschooling my two youngest daughter 6 my son has autism and about to be 10 and I need to do better for their futures sake. The gear you'll need is very expensive, and you probably won't be getting a good return on your investment due to high electricity costs. I am not sure if there are still coins out there you can mine profitably.
