Very true! I was diagnosed at the start of this year (along with periocular dermatitis and rosacea), and have seen about a 70% reduction of blepharitis symptoms after doing the following: 1. I threw out all of my makeup, which was ANCIENT anyway & I stopped using makeup for a year (and that severely depressed me, but there was just no point, and i needed to give my face/eyes space to heal) 2.I changed my diet, to not include gluten & dairy, going onto a more meat based diet, with low acidic foods (this alone cleared up my rosacea) 3. every night using an eye heat mask for 10 minutes 4. morning and night wiping eyes with a cleanser specifically for the eye to get rid of makeup/debris (even though i was not using makeup) and using a cotton bud soaked in it to "brush across" the lash lines 5. using a more expensive eyedrop from the opticians instead of the optrex ones on the supermarket shelves for dry eyes. 6. taking omega 3/cod liver fish oil (in liquid form, which apparently has better "bioavailability" than capsules) 7. swimming and more cardio (not sure if relevant, but figured it would help my body with overall circulation, because i had a lot of inflammation in other parts of my body including knees, which are a bit better now.) After this video i'm thinking of adding a more demodex mite-targeted cleanser too. I am now slowly, trying to reincorporate makeup again, but this time i'm going about makeup hygiene like a makeup artist would. making sure between every use to "sanitise" products with a specialised spray they use to cleanse between clients, and not "double dipping" my mascara wand, but instead using disposable wands and things like that! I just watched Dr Rupa's video on tightlining with eyeliner, so will avoid that to start too. it's been a LOT of work, but am happy to finally start stepping back into the make up world again. fingers crossed!

@@DrRupaWongVery helpful video! Big question I could not find answer to online anywhere is does it have to be baby shampoo or does regular foaming face wash do the same thing? Not sure if it’s some special ingredient about baby shampoo that makes it more effective. Also will a bar soap like cetaphil also work? What about a non foaming face wash like neutrogena? Would really appreciate your advice!! ❤❤❤

I have suffered with blepharitis since in my forties - ok am now 68. I have found what works for me is Vicks vapo rub. As soon as I feel a flare starting I carefully apply the Vicks to my eyelid being careful not to get it into the eye. Your eyes will water like crazy and your nose will run. The more intense the flare the more my eyes water. I only have to apply this once and it clears up. I wash off the Vicks after my eyes stop watering and go about my business. Since I started doing this my flare ups only happen about every two to three years.

Exceptional video! I've been struggling with chronic blepharitis for two years. I've seen many doctors, even an eyelid specialist. Had steriod injections, antibiotics, told to do compresses and cleaning of the lids but not exactly how to do it or that i should compress 1st then clean and massage after. I think they assume I know exactly what to do. The management is in the specific details. Thank you for breaking it down and explaining it so detailed.

Thank you!!! I’m a COA & work in Ophthalmology with some amazing doctors & as I’m sure you know, we have the “Bleph” discussion what feels like a million times a day. I feel like you touched on so many highlights that patients have a hard time understanding & love that you emphasized lid hygiene as part of one’s daily skin care routine, because it really should be. Most beauty products & cleansers all say to avoid the eye, of course meaning not to get any of the harsh products into the eye itself, but your eyes & lids are skin too & deserve a little TLC like the rest of your body. There are product formulations out there for even the most sensitive of skin. Also love that you touched on Lipiflow & IPL. IPL has been a life changer for me, both medically for my own dry eye & Bleph, but also aesthetically for both facial & ocular Rosacea. I will highly recommend this video going forward. Keep the facts coming Doctor, I’ll be “keeping an eye out” for new videos… Every pun intended. lol 😂

Ever since I've been cleansing my eye(lid)s daily with Blephasol, my blepharitis has been almost 100% under control :) Sometimes my eyelid gets a little inflamed if my mascara is too old, or I've been scratching my eye lid with my nail, or something else that gets bacteria in them, cleansing them with Blephasol usually helps clearing within a day again! For hardcore infections, a warm cloth is indeed the way to go, after which I cleanse again. I'm so glad I've got it under control now, because it had been a problem for me for a good few years 😅 (I have sensitive skin by the way, and probably rosacea, but my problems occurred in my early twenties.)

Watch out with shampoo and with what you wash. Some things can cause reaction in the eyes. I found cutting carbs and all sugars made a huge cure. And sitting 12 hours at computer plus cold and windy environment can make eyes worse. So avoid these and try to look at distant objects to loose eye muscles frequently. Make a habbit to not to touch eyes all the time with dirty fingers, and wash face with just water often, clean the dust in your room. Worth to start with little things :)

Such an informative video, thank you! Blepharitis can be so miserable. During a flare up I find that the pain and pressure inside my eyes can be very tiring all over, mentally, and also like a mild flu. I wish my eye doctor had given me even a tenth of the explanation you give here. I don't have skin conditions but I'm a prime candidate. Diagnosed a year ago. First my eyes started rejecting contact lenses about 50% of the time, after years of no issues, which is pretty devastating! Then I tried false lashes for a couple of special events, my eyes went nuts a couple of days later and due to the pain I saw an eye doctor about it. I'm in my 40s, in a senior corporate job involving intense work at a computer screen (and likely forgetting to blink when hyperfocused), plus insomnia, not a great water drinker (not helped by ADHD - both the forgetfulness re drinking plus the medication). I'm definitely going to try your advice. Thank you.

I have dry eye and suffer from occasional eye discharge/irritation. What really works for me is Cetaphil GENTLE foaming facial cleanser, which you can find at any drugstore. It is great as you can massage it right into your eyelash area without any stinging or discomfort. The “Gentle” formula (not the regular foaming cleanser, as it has less harsh ingredients) is so gentle for my eyes that when it flares up, cleaning my eyes twice/day with this, clears it up very quickLy. As well, make sure you use a COTTON washcloth and change it frequently. I find that the synthetic facial makeup remover facecloths, irritate my eyes more and I can’t use them. I’ve struggled with this for years and I find that this helps. Thank you for your interesting video.

I think you just told me what has been wrong with my eyes for a few years now. I love to read but I haven’t been able to read more than a page at a time when I used to go through four books a week. My eyes are dry and then one eye will turn into a fountain. Yesterday it really felt like someone had turned a tiny tap on when I wanted to go to sleep. In the morning I felt like I needed to use my hands to open that eye. It is a weird feeling. My eyelashes get itchy and I have even given up trying another mascara or eye liner. I just stopped using any makeup. I have seen several eye Doctors who tell my eyes are good. Two weeks ago I saw my GP because the other eye was gunky in the morning and itchy. He told me the glands inside my lower lid were blocked. He gave me some drops and he showed me how to gently massage them with a warm cloth and which direction to do it. I never knew eyes could be so annoying. Then I think of our adopted beauty who has very progressive Myopia. She was legally blind at 8 years old and I have nothing to complain about. Her teacher sent me a note when she was 5 saying. Take her to see this eye Specialist, he is also a child psychologist and he will tell you she is just stupid and it isn’t her eyes. I was so angry I went to see him. He was amazing and he asked me to trust him to keep as much sight as he could until she was older. He asked her to trust him too and he told her the glasses he was going to give would hurt her eyes and make things look weird but if she trusted him in a few days they would be great. He told me they would continually pull her eyes near and far and she should start going bowling and play basketball. Both good near and far sports and golf would be better but if she ever managed to hit the ball she would never find it again. I showed him the teachers note and he got angry. He wrote one back that he would be contacting her Principal for continually putting my baby in the back row when I had told her she can only see from the front. Before this man she needed new lenses every two to four weeks. He said it is her eyes and the teacher was the only stupid thing in her classroom. The teacher would not have her on the basketball team because she was from Korea. This was a Christian school where I thought she would be safe. The Coach a year above her took her every year until High School. When he fitted her glasses I noticed going back to the car she was walking like she was climbing stairs and quietly crying. We were driving home and I heard her say Mama? Then she told me there were signs on every street corner, they all had different names. Then, Mama I think I know what a leaf is. I didn’t know until then just how much she had missed. During Covid my State locked it’s borders for two years. We didn’t have Covid. My baby was 33 and she went blind 4 times. Her retina kept detaching and I couldn’t get to her but her big sister took over. Her eye Doctor promised when she was ready for surgery and it wouldn’t be laser surgery because her eye was flat. So she was too high of a risk. Her Surgeon that he had ready for her was the head of the State Board. After you graduated you had to work under him and only he could say if you were good enough for Surgery. I asked him how he managed that? He told me he went to University with his brother. On her last surgery that surgeon cried and apologized for giving her a new lense because she was too young. After they removed her cataract. She has been told her other eye will do the same thing at any time but they are all there when she needs them and there was no charge for any of it. I asked her specialist why he hadn’t retired yet. He told me he almost has but he promised our girl that he was there until she was okay. He hasn’t taken a new patient for 5 years. He can’t go until she learns to use her eyes together. He used to be my eye Doctor until we moved away. He would have known what was wrong with my eyes now. I think I just wrote a book, sorry.

Yes, been hunting for answers, I'd been cross-referencing all my make up items that do or don't flare up my eyes, asking make-up companies for ingredient lists, to try to isolate what ingredient it could be. I first got blepharitis a year ago, after wearing false lashes a couple of times for a performance. The pain in my eyes was so scary days after, I went to the eye doctor, then got diagnosed. Needless to say, no more false lashes! But I do use primers and liners close to the waterline, as I have hooded lids, and some are fine, others unbearable within an hour. Have wasted a lot of $ because you only find out after buying. Thank you again! :)

For a few days now, red and itchy and now runny nose. Prior to this, it was the eye liner. Bear in mind prior to the eyiner. I never had these problems for years. I've been using eyeliner n mascara all if a sudden I'm having what my doctor assistant called allergies. I'll see the doctor soon as the appt becomes available in the main time. I'm using otc drop, but the itch just gets crazy sometimes. I'm trying my hardest to avoid rubbing. I believe rubbing the eye trigger of more itchyness.

Another trick that I've used and I'll share. Is a chemical toe warmer, peel it back, get it warmed and then (because it has a sticky side) I double it over and then I place it under the patch and that gives me a warm compress for a long period of time.

As a child, I had many attacks of Blepharitis … I would wake up with ‘goop’ sealing my eyes shut and would have to bath my eyes with hot water…and some kind of white powder in it! I have lost eyelashes…will they come back someday? It seemed to happen mostly in the fall…would that be an allergy! I have since been diagnosed with ‘dry eyes’ and had cataract surgery…I am now 65 and have very sensitive eyes…is there anything that can help them?

My son got these flare ups and the one thing that I did to help clear it up was increase his dose of cod liver oil supplements and put "no tears" baby shampoo around his eyes daily till it went away. I would apply it on a wipe and massage it on his lash line throughout the day and slather it on his eyes during bath time. I'd use eucalyptus Epsom salt and baking soda in the bath water too.

Not sure but I do know that if you have internal inflammation , you are more prone to this . I’ve dealt with this for so long and the only thing I can think of is - I have hyper mobility and when the internal swelling gets bad - I get a swollen lids and mild redness in the eye . Hot compress works great but don’t use heat for too long as the heat can make your eyes feel funky . And yes … get some drops that help with dryness , this will help . This is a high-quality video on blepharitis. When I type "blepharitis" into the KZbin search bar, this is the first video that pops up. You go over the major causes of blepharitis, and then you describe the treatments for it. You link us all sorts of useful stuff too. Thanks a lot. Sept 2021 I suffered from a bad flare-up caused by blepharitis. I had trouble seeing out of my right eye because the eyelids swelled up so much. I take this condition much more seriously now. It was quite painful and embarrassing last year, and now I'm managing it much better. Thank you. Truly, it would be great if hospitals and other care clinics linked your video to "blepharitis outpatient resources" since you do such a great job explaining the topic. ----- I forgot that editing a comment makes the channel creator's heart disappear. I fixed some grammar issues. Also, your video is currently (March 2023) in fourth place when we search for "blepharitis" on KZbin. Thanks for liking my comment, Dr. Rupa Wong.

After having cataract surgery on my right eye I developed blepharitis (I had dry eyes before surgery). I have done all the treatments recommended ie., hot water compresses, massaging and two types of HYLO eye drops at regular intervals. I could not tolerate the oral three month course of antibiotics so I was put on a three month antibiotic Azythromycin treatment. I am waiting for the cataract operation on my left eye, but I am apprehensive about it because I am still in discomfort. I am now thinking of asking to see a specialist in blepharitis to ask if I could try the Lipiflow or Nulids or zest or maybe the IPL treatment. I live in the U.K. and so I don’t know how to obtain these treatments. Would you please advise me as I am desperate to find some relief. Thanking you. Marie.

From what the doctor has described - it seems that raw milk would be the solution to the problem. The warm compresses need to be something that can maintain heat for 10 minutes; something like hot rocks (wrap in cloth before placing on eye lids) (or rice bags) that have been heated in your oven - microwave is NOT a good choice. . . consider the hydrogen bond issue if you want to research out the why not. Massage is a delicate thing for your eyelids. Be careful please. No one wants to see saggy bags around your eyes from mechanical abuse. With judicious attention to cleaning, melting, and massage the blepharitis issue will resolve.

I had to stop wearing makeup back in the 90’s because of this issue as well as allergies to makeup some days are bad where I wake up with my eyes sealed closed once I get that cleared up I’m fine a for a long time it all started when I was 8 years old woke up one morning with the worst case of cursing on the eyes, it took Mom 3 days to clear the crusting off my eyes. I have to have a cleaning routing since then, I’m 60 now and only gets bad when I’m sick and not able to do my normal routing. I have noticed when my asthma gets bad so do my eyes. When my asthma is playing up I get thick sticky wet eyes which then makes my eyesight blurry I use the dry eyes spray as this helps to water it down and makes it easy to clean my eyes off the gunk.

My eye doctor told me that I had blepharitis years ago and he basically explained to me that that's when your oil glands get clogged. And your eyes get super dried out. I had to take an antibiotic at a very low dose for a long time and I don't even think it helped me. There's also something else that you can do for your eyes to help to unclog the oil glands and I think that helped a lot more. You can basically take an old sock and fill it with some rice to where it can still be flattened out a bit. Warm that up in the microwave or the oven until it's warm to the touch. Put that on to each closed eye for 5 min. That will help the oil to be released from the glands surrounding your eyes and it will help your eyes to feel better. Blepharitis usually comes with dry eyes. You can do the warm compress in the morning and at night. It also helps with eye pain that you will get if you don't get enough sleep. I noticed that sometimes it hurts to open my eyes in the mornings so using the warm compress helps to take away that pain. And it's very soothing. You can also use a wet compress but I feel like that tends to dry out the skin around the eyes.

I'm going through some of the dry eye issues now and scarring as a result of negligence by doctors who did not do anything about it on visits which I attend twice a year for. I was on steroid cream which did nothing and non preservative eye drops such as natural tears for months. No doctor here in Ontario Canada has a solution but to use artificial tears. Thealoz Duo or Hylo). It helps but continues to come and go. I also use a Bruder eye mask you can warm up for 20 seconds in micro heat which helps relieve eye pain and reduces swelling and actually feels good on the eyes. Use it twice a day but you can use more often if needed. Dr Rupa has provided excellent information here and I will look into trying some of her suggestions. It can all add up pretty quickly as this is a long term issue if you want to maintain healthy eyes and avoid complications. All the best with getting your eyes healthy again!

@marciwhitman3513 Жыл бұрын
@@onerose3614 natural tears do not do anything for your eyes. You need eye drops made for dry eyes. I use Systane gel drops for severe dry eyes. In the beginning when i was first diagnosed I had to use the drops every 2 hours. And I had to use an eye ointment at night. Overtime it changed to twice a day. And then as needed. I no longer need the eye ointment. The last time I was at the eye doctor which was right after I got diagnosed with celiac disease which was in 2012 I was told that the blepharitis had resolved. Lately I had to go to the ER at wills eye hospital because of flashing lights at the corner of one of my eyes and severe eye floaters. Fortunately for me nothing severe happened to my retina. I am due to go back for a checkup this month.

Hi Miriam. I'm a sufferer of Bletharitis and skin conditions. Neutrogena T Gel shampoo will cure your itching scalp, eye brows and lashes. You can get it at the chemist. It's specially for , dermatitis, psoriasis, flaky scalp, itching scalp, seborrheic dermatitis. I stumbled upon the fact that it not only fixed my scalp, but I noticed my itchy face stopped. I started using a tiny bit on my eyes for my bad Bletharitis and it has fixed that after around 4 days. You might want to use a little amount to wash your face and wash your hair with it. It's brilliant. No more itching scalp, no crusty sore eyes. Good luck, you could use any coal tar shampoo. Louise Australia

Since demodex mites were metioned here: Anybody struggling with these mites on your face (NOT your eyelids): put honey on over night. Demodex mites live in your pores, but they come out onto the surface of your face when it is dark to mate. Yep, they make love. When you put honey on (no need for a thick layer), the mites have a really hard time to move and multiply. After 2-3 weeks, they are gone, they don't live longer than that. Now, on the eyelids, honey is not recommended, this is for your face only.. Do not worry that honey might stain your pillow. It will be dry enough after a few minutes, it also kills microbes and the next morning you rub it off which is a gentle peel.

My daughter had a lot of styes in both eyes as a toddler. Around 10yrs old, she stopped getting styes and started having a raging red eye most of the time. It's only the right eye. Left eye is completely fine. After several Dr appts, we finally got a referral to a pediatric Opthomologist at Kapiolani. He gave us prednisone, but warned us to only use it once or it will cause glaucoma. Then he said the only thing we can do in warm cloth compresses. It sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. Once in a while her eye will look normal for a week or 10 days. Most of the time is inflamed. She's 12 now and gets teased at school for her eye. Can you help us???

You have great information here and I will be taking some of it to see if it will help me out even more. Thank you!

I had Blepharitis for years, it felt at times as if I had wood in my eyes, and the gunk, the styes, the soreness was a big big problem. I tried a number of ‘remedies’ suggested, but had no joy. Then I read that Blepharitis can be caused by blocked tear ducts. If you blink about 20 times, around blinks 8-10 you should start to feel moisture. That’s the ducts opening. This may work for you. At the start, try blinking about 50 times on the trot, four times a day. Use ordinary soap and tap water to clear. After 1-2 weeks, you should start to see some improvement, and you can reduce it to three times a day, then twice. Now, I have a regime for blinking about 80 times just as I’m about to nod off in bed, and touch wood have had no problems for years. God knows whatever caused the Blepharitis in the first place. When it started, I was on the PC a lot, staring at the screen and probably hardly ever blinking. But try this method. It costs absolutely nothing, and I hope will help you.

Hi doc, I just want to know your take about eye rubbing or wiping eye make up. By reflex we sometimes rub our eyes, does it affect the cornea if not done oftenly? Also using wipes on the eyelids, is the pressure harmful to the cornea?

Hi Michaella! Thank you for your questions. I will look into this subject and see about making a video on it. I am attaching a video I have already made on removing eye makeup. Let me know if that helps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ2vqKikotaWkJI

I have had a really bad experience with it. I went to a nurse practitioner who prescribed to me the antibiotic Cephalexin, in which I got a mini stroke from it and went into the hospital. I had a very allergic reaction to it, and he did not want me to stop taking it, and wouldn't see me again. The pharmacist told me to stop immediately, but it was too late. I am now on an ointment called erythromycim ophthalmic from a different clinic, now for 3 days, but my upper eyelids still feel itchy. A little red too. I bought that heated mask and spray from amazon made for this too. The spray is a cleanser I put on cotton balls. I tried olive oil, coconut oil before, but this is really frustrating trying to get over this, plus the mini stroke I had from a bad drug I was prescribed, which he neglected to tell me those side effects I found out too late. Some places I read not to use the heated mask, it will make the problem worse, and it says to use ice packs. Says inflammation loves heat. This gets confusing! Thankyou for your videos.

I was driving one day and my eyes started watering like I was crying. My eyes were so dry the papers the doc put on my eyes felt like razor blades. The pain was horrible as it felt like my lashes sealed shut and the eyelids swelled. I wore sunglasses and couldn't wear makeup. FF thirty years and it resurfaced, not as severe but required a surgery for the tears to drain. I no longer wear makeup and I have eye drops in every room. I bought a glass eye cup to use in the middle of the night. Thank you, Doctor!

Thank you for actually having some interesting looking solutions. I think I might have dry eye. So I might try these. I cried back in June really hard. I don’t cry often at all. My eyes stayed ridiculously puffy for over a month after this crying incident. I had such bad eyebags from it that my husband even mentioned it, and he compliments me with every breath. The eyebags never fully went away. And my upper lids also remained puffy. is it possible for fluid to retain in that area for over eight months? I am 46 years old. So I’m sure that the stretching of the skin that happened from the crying is partly to blame. But my eyes look smaller than before and I just look older and tired. It floors me that one crying episode eight months ago could have made my eyes look so much worse for this many months. Please help! I have asked doctors about it and they just tell me that I am getting older.I am getting older. But it’s just hard to believe that one episode could cause permanent eyebags and permanent puffy upper eyelids. I look 10 years older. Thank you so much! You have absolutely gorgeous eyes!❤

I suffer from this and the lash loss is the worst part. I found a few false lash companies created by eye doctors. One you reviewed already. The magnetic lashes. But I also found another called lash job beauty bounder. Can I never wear eye makeup or false lashes again?

I am so sorry you had that experience, Amanda! Whether you never use them again is completely up to you. However, I would recommend waiting until you feel fully healed before you apply eyelashes. If you do once you are healed, try applying the eyelashes only on special occasions. Comment and let me know what you decide. Thanks for the comment!
