You're right. Gardeners today treat bolting as a shocking annoyance. But centuries ago they would let a few plants bolt intentionally so it would produce seeds for next year's crop. In theory you can buy seeds once and then eat for free for the rest of your life if you allow a few plants to bolt and collect seeds. That's smart gardening.

One of the nice things about gardening is that you can watch your plants go from just little seedlings to tall and great sources for vitamins/nutrients.

My mom always called it going to seed. She was a seed saver. I let one of my radish plants go to seed. It got tall and produced lots of pods. I wasn't sure what to do with it, I was going to wait until the end of the season to see what happens. Would the pods turn brown? I didn't know. But, when I went to the garden on Friday, that plant was gone. Half the onions that had come back from last year were also gone. The ones that weren't taken had their tops taken. I was disappointed to see what happened. But, there are things still growing. I hope that our growing season is long enough for my tomatoes to produce fruit. I noticed on Friday that one of my cucumber plants has a tiny cucumber on it, about 3/4" long. The peppers that I raised from seed have many flowers. I hope I get some fresh bell peppers. I like tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers on toast with my home fermented sauerkraut.

The flowers of your basil are edible if you catch them before seed is formed. You can also dry them for use later.

@TheRipeTomatoFarms

It can be stalled....not prevented. Plants will eventually go to flower. Normally, the slight delay isn't entirely worth it, but cutting off the flower stalks as they appear can buy you time, sometimes (not always).

Ok im a little confused 😅 why do you need to re-plant your anual plants from scratch every time? If i let them bolt shouldn't they grow again in the same spot in my garden next season?

@@Prepping-for-Heaven 😆 I've had more than my share of rhubarb! Kinda overdid and ate it for 2 solid months one year. 😵‍💫 Now we mix it with seasonal fruit and spread on pancakes. It's a yearly ritual now to eat a little rhubarb. I have 1 regular and 2 strawberry rhubarbs.
