What is "Cam Deviation" In the 996 Carrera and 986 Boxster?

You can do both sides with engine in the car. If you loosen the cross bar on both sides and drop the side your doing more than the other there is just enough access. 4-5-6 (right side) is tougher as the AC compressor is on top of the tensioner that needs to be slacked off/removed to undo the chain. I've done 3 cars. All 5 chain engines need this by 100K. Good video.

This must be on a Boxster. Unless you remove the subframe on a 996 you cannot remove the bank 1 scavenge pump. At that point if you're removing the subframe it is less time consuming to remove the motor. I prefer to address all the issues at this service so removing the motor makes better sense and is cheaper than removing the subframe and re-aligning etc.

Take your time, my advice is to pressure wash the engine after you get it out. Also, we have the cam chain wear pads in stock at a lower price because we bought 50 sets of them in mid 2023 before the price hike.

With a deviation of 6.5 I did my bank 1 with engine in the car and it was fairly easy. My bank 2 deviation is only 1.1 so not too worried about it other than I feel like if you do one side you should do the other. Doing bank 2 with engine in the car you mentioned the scavage pump is the problem but I replaced my pump by dropping on the mounts and levering the engine a few mm. Isn't the bank 2 difficulty due to exhaust headers need to be removed and the risk of broken bolts, or not?

Dear sir, with all due respect, only half of the story is correct. Correct is that that guide’s wear affects relative cam postion. What is incorrect is to call that cam deviation, as that refers to deviation between crank and cam. It is measured in deg. CrK and per bank, not per camshaft. That’t why my 3-chain M96/03 can also have cam deviation😎.

That is correct- I was incorrect in the video. The deviation is between the crankshaft and cams, not from cam to cam. Although I'm sure wearing cam pads can cause a deviation between the intake/exhaust cam etc. Either way when the pads wear nothing good comes of it! --Aaron
