Canonical tags are hints so even if you don't use them on your website, Google is going to prefer one version over another. By using canonical, you are telling Google what "you" want, which oage "you" feel should be preferred. So, it's good to implement it now. Internet is now just getting started, its not too late to do anything.

We have a indoor plant ecommerce store , we have listed one same plant in multiple listings with different pots , like for example a jade plant 1. Jade plant Small $10 2. Jade plant Big $15 3. Jade plant in a concrete pot $17 4. Jade plant with gift packaging $11 Now for all the 4 products the description of the plant remains the same. so do we need to add the canonical tag ( the link of the product 1 ) to all the other products ? So only the first product might be visible or indexed on google ??? Is it possible to target all the products or is it better to target one out of these many ??

Good question Fawaaz! I have to ignore a lot of questions due to lack of details. In your case, you should pick product 1's link and put it on every product's page as canonical even on product 1. It is always better to rank your cheapest product unless you are in luxury segment. Since all pages have same content, Google is going to rank just 1 or worse, all of your pages will fight with each other for the space in SERP. So, its better to consolidate your ranking and tell google which page is your best candidate for SERP.

Google won't put any negative sentiment on any page but you are dividing your page value between 2 pages because their content is near similar. If you use canonical, Google will still crawl both pages and index both pages. If someone is looking for that exact color, Google might even show correct page but you won't be dividing your page value between two pages. Canonical and pagination are big factors on e-com sites.
