Thanks for making this video, I suspect I will rewatch it multiple times leading up to the release in less than a month. Last year I was itching to play Chaos;Head and played through the early parts(up until the part where the police look at the security cam footage, felt like a good place to stop and got me intrigued) using the old fanTL and I was hooked. I would not be surprised if this becomes a favorite of mine. Can't wait to read this without setting japanese locales and being able to save in chapter six (that crack was ass but I still have it in my mediafire lol) Chäos;Head was the first VN I've ever read and it was an experience I'll never forget. Funnily enough, I was looking through my dad's PlayStation+ games and a weird game called Steins;Gate catched my attention. I downloaded it and played for a few minutes, then read up on it and discovered that it's part of a series called SciAdv. The first game was Chäos;Head. What a stupid name, guess I'll read that first. It took a while to find a noname site where I could actually download it, in like 13 parts and with atrociously low download speed, but eventually I managed to make them into one ZIP file. It came with an english patch and a swimsuit patch that never worked haha. Patching it to english wasn't enough as the game needed japanese locales to run properly. I had no idea what I was doing but I finally got it running. I remember the low quality uncanny main menu with that creepy BGM and the whirring of the hdd from the pc styled submenus. It was weird, and I was digging it. Then, the prologue. Rain is falling. A pink haired high school girl kisses you then kills you with a comically large sword amidst the ruins of what appeared to be Shibuya. What the hell is going on. This is cool. Soon after the MC, Takumi is introduced. It quickly became apparent that this is not a hero deserving the reader's symphaty. He is a lazy egocentric otaku shut-in, who plays games all day and collects figurines, and the few times he goes to school he suffers from anxiety makes sure to isolate himself from others. He was just like me, but even worse. It was my first time dealing with an antipathetic hero but by this time the more niche this game became, the more I liked it. I couldn't have imagined horror working in a Visual Novel, but goddamn it does. I don't know how credible that fan translation was, but it was also my first time with japanese writing and its difference from conventional english phraseology gave it an extra surreal vibe. It also surprised me that this light scifi with giant-flashy-sword-wielding-heroines (interpret it as you will) actually has real science and conspiracy theories as its base. (Steins;Gate later blew my mind with this). Also, I quickly fell in love with this japanese Goth Rock band FES is in. I still listen to the two PHANTASM albums from time to time, they really nailed it. tl;dr nostalgia rant

Epic video, I’m an admin of 3 SciADV wikis including the Chaos;Head one, you did a great job promoting this awesome game without spoilers. Warning: the wiki is full of spoilers. BTW there used to be 2 separate Chaos;Head wikis (one with more articles and one with longer articles) and I was the one who merged them into one with the best of both wikis combined. That was kind of a lot of work, I think I did that like, 2 years ago? Anyway, great video and feel free to visit the Chaos;Head or other SciADV wikis if you are OK with spoilers, and if you find any mistakes, feel free to edit the wiki pages, everyone is welcome except trolls/vandals. I want the SciADV wikis to provide accurate and helpful information about all the games and related media in the series (We’re not quite there yet, especially not with the most neglected entry in the series, Occultic;Nine, but maybe someday.)

One of my favourite things about C;H is how it starts to play with the delusion system and your expectations of it. The system in itself is kind weak, it has that SciAdv Vagueness that really doesn't help with knowing how to progress, and I don't really like that it's kinda pointless on a first playthrough, but as an _atmosphere_ system it's fun. (Also funny that you say "praying the localisation is good" on a screenshot that apparently has issues! Apparently that line should have quote-marks around it.)
@culIen2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that second bit was 100% intentional haha. The three screens we've seen have been worrying, but I'm hoping the rest is okay? No quotation marks in a game without speaker tags in the text box is,,, worrying as hell so I really hope that's not what we should be expecting around launch. For those of you who are fans of the anime "AICO: Incarnation", I was thinking. What if I make my fanmade season 2 of that show as a crossover with the Sciadv saga ? It could be set after the true ending of "Chaos;Child", and maybe I could use elements of the saga to explain some things that happened in the protagonist's adventure. I mean, I already used Lain for the interlude between both seasons, I don't see the reason to not go further. What do you think ? Would you people be interested, or would you prefer I used no further crossover elements in AICO ? Because I do plan to make this story a template for an official season 2. You would be free to remove the most obvious elements of this being a crossover should your plan be to spread the story (as long as the credits are given, because I'm still gonna make use of this fanfic for future projects, therefore I need people informed).

I actually love Chaos;Head and it was THE game that hooked me into the Science Adventure series and anime/visual novels in general. The way you experience the story from Takumi's perspective and become bombarded with unexplained weird shit which is going on around you was so unsettling and so disconnected at first that you fully embraced Takumi's side "Fuck all of this, I'm rather gonna stay in my hikikomori shed and not attempt to screw this up further". And when mid-story you were able to piece all of the happening events into one coherent picture, OH MY GOD, it was marvelous. It was like a feeling like a ball of tangled threads was shown to you untangled and you were "How was I so stupid not to get it before?" The story's structure and the way it's also filled with all the gruesome murders, convoluted science and business topics make it way more realistic for me than other SciAdv novels. I'm really happy they finally are going to release it in English. Definitely going to replay it again ^^

This series has a problem conveying its mechanics go the player. I think the intent, when this game originally came out, was that the player would read the manual. Not a lot of care was put into conveying a similar experience for players of the modern ports. Closest I think you get is going into the control/help menu option to see that a delusion trigger can be activated with a button, but that's basically it lol

Does anyone know where to look to find what they censored from the original NOAH release, I can’t find anything on the topic?
@ChrisGreenLink2 жыл бұрын
We had a post up about it not too long ago, but it was lost to time. I can just tell you, though. Basically, the game has eight total routes including the common route. Three of these routes were cut down in some way. The first of which is B Route/Crying Sky, which was also in the original C;H PC release. Over 500 lines of dialogue/narration/etc. were removed from this specific route. That is a *significant* amount of content that equates to around 50% of the route. This isn't optional content, either, it's story-important content that is required to understand the game and view its true ending. The second is from one of the heroine routes. A number of lines in it were cut, but nowhere near as many as in B Ending (around 40 in total). It's still pretty important content to the atmosphere and overall tone of the game; part of what makes Chaos;Head so special is how raw and unfiltered it is, and this removes a lot of that. Lastly, a few lines were removed from the Common Route. Again, not many, but still a noticeable amount (namely, from Ch 8 and Ch 9). That's everything that was removed in the PS3 version, and subsequently the VITA and Switch releases.

I read the fan translated original like four or five years ago, and I can't say I liked it. I'm definitely one of the people who considers Takumi an insufferable dipshit and I do think the developers went WAY too hard with the asocial, misanthropic nerd angle. However, I feel like the bigger issue with the story is the direction it took around the last third-to-quarter. There's a very noticeable tonal shift from a Japanese urban mystery thriller vibe to more of a schlocky anime action trip, and there's some really goofy plot twists near the end that just made me roll my eyes.

I definitely think you should give it another go with NoAH. The development of the characters is given far more time, and you get an even bigger view into Takumi's head space, which is enhanced by new CGs and scenes.

To add, I don't think you're necessarily wrong for not vibing with the game! NoaH is very cool and seems to address issues, but things like Takumi and shonen tonal shifts are NOT for everyone. It might be worth checking it out on a sale if you just don't have the energy for it, but that's only if you're really curious because I think it's just MORE (and slightly improved) C;H not a different C;H.

I have a love-hate relationship with Chäos;HEAd. Well no, mainly... I guess hate? But not exactly. Probably the word is "frustration". Mainly cause I dislike Takumi and how he is developped and how rushed is the finale. I think the VN should had been like 428, making use of three parallel protagonists whose stories we follow. Mainly since HEAd has three main plotlines: 1. Murder mystery. 2. The Comitee. 3. Takumi's paranoia. Being Japanese Colombo the oke who carries the first, Sena the second and Takumi the third... and my issue is he solves all three plotlines out of nowhere. And it was pretty disappointing. The game went from "weird thriller" to "weird otaku power fantasy" in its last moments. But... I have still some respect of its MAGNIFIQUE AMBIENCE. Gosh, how one can feel every second of the work until ch9 finale is really respectable. It is grotesque and addictive in a way. And it pattented that kind of ambient which S;G and C;C employed too. So... I have a complex relationship. Specially since I do not think NoAH fixes HEAd that much... but gosh, this VN wa onto something respecting its production. Tho I loved Child and Takuru. Takuru is ma boy.

Just as I nearly spaced out, this boy goes and summons the Tall Shoezees of Clapcloud to this realm, like a whole sus amogus do big spoiler-free description to banish the nope-grieffers from their @ powers. Ah yes, (sub)scribbled. Please tell me more about wheelchair-Alex Jones, and how his sailor moon murder harem must stop the organization from revealing the gay frogs closing in to devour all of Stein's; Grapes. Spoilers: my wheelchair does not make the girlfriends I made up combat effective, and Charles Xavier is trying to sue me, joke's on him tho, I'm making a Hentai game so collective psychic thought becomes nothing but his movie voice explaining Nightcrawler giving Sabretoots 47 happy endings. Marvel is going to jail for beastial mutant war crimes, and Hillary will pay for it. Thanks Obama. Have fun getting my comments away from your lovely videos. Who tf is Noah? Is he the peeping Tom with these eyes? Do he see this ->👌? Houin Kiiieeeeeeeooommmaaa!
