Excellent video, coach. As an Asian American (Japanese/Korean) growing up in Hawaii and California, I have seen Chinese 9-man VB but have never played it. I am not comfortable with the built-in racial exclusion rule, but given the context of its history, I can certainly understand it and I can see all the good it does in the Chinese American community, and the Asian American community as a whole.
@silentperson2332 жыл бұрын
Could be viewed as a diversity rule, bringing the asian american community together. It reminded me of Singapore's law enforced diversity programs, requiring multiple ethnic groups living in an apartment building; it supposedly helps different ethnic groups get along since they're forced to be neighbors.

I'm white as the driven snow and didn't understand the proud and difficult history of this game and it's racial origins. Very fun to learn about this game, super fun to watch it, and a I'm really glad this is still being played to honor the history of the people that played and loved it. Thanks for uploading this.

Hey Coach, Haikyu reaction watcher here. I was watching your 9 Man Finals video and was wondering what the technique number 23 on Smash was using when they would spike the ball, since it looked like he was dunking it, which I have now learned is the Fast Ball. But what I did not expect was the lesson I learned soon after that brought me to tears. I am shocked I never learned about the struggles of Chinese Americans in any part of my education (High School education). Honestly at first when I heard the 3/9 Asian Descent or Mixed rule I was a bit saddened because I'm white but I understand now and respect that fully. Thank you for educating me and opening my eyes.

Thanks, coach for this very informative and honest education on Chinese 9 Man Volleyball. As a fellow coach and player and someone who grew up in the US in an area with a strong Asian population - mostly Filipino and Korean and smaller Chinese community - I have great respect for Asian culture. I was always the extremely tall white kid who was treated like family and fed very well in these homes - I ended up an even 2 meters and I'm pretty sure the food I ate as a kid helped a lot. I understand the arguments in regards to the "racist" nature of the game/sport and that it was a response to incredible oppression and racism predominantly from the white community. There is also to this day a very strong racial tension between the African American and Asian communities which is unfortunate. I'm sure much of this relates to the drive for success and the pressure kids feel to become successful in many of these cultures and that too has led to many unfair stereotypes in American culture. I too would hope that perhaps some version of the sport eventually opens up to more multi-ethnic play but can understand the desire to maintain the sport for what it mainly is - a celebration of Chinese culture and a historical outlet that was created to deal with incredible adversity and discrimination. I think it would be a great way to help educate various ethnicities on Chinese culture and history in America. With China and America currently the world powers that they are I'm sure this could be helpful in each culture better understanding each other. Mad props to folks diving around on what are basically parking lots. Must be a lot of skin left on those courts!

Great video coach! It's crazy to hear the history of how it all started and me being an African American myself I totally accept that it's a Asian only sport. You want to feel like as race itself that you have something to call your own. And until the world stops all of this "racistism" (and let's be real, there will always be racist out there) then maybe the Asian community will share it with the world! Looking forward to the indoor play vids!

I understand the sport has an history of racial discrimination against the Chinese American community... but today, Chinese 9 man players exclude and segregate non-Asian from playing 9 man volleyball... in 2021, for me, it's called hypocrisy. You need to learn and respect the heritage of the game, but even more important, in 2021, you should share your culture to others for progress, openness and inclusion. I kind of get it though, if non-Asian would challenge these rules, they will be targeted as non respectful of Chinese tradition. On the other hand, Asian people gets to be inclusive and have fun playing this sport, so they might not see the motivation and take the risk to challenge the whole tradition and organizations around this sport. It still does not make this right.

It's an obvious violation of civil rights but then again civil rights are a violation of the freedom of association. We can't have 9 man and civil rights. As you said - hypocrisy. One has to go. Interesting video. It is a little strange though that they exclude other races in a sport founded because of racism. Wouldn't it be a great way to educate non-asians into asian culture? Instead, it just excludes them and widens the division. In order to protect their culture they shouldn't exclude non-asians but mandate half the team be Chinese and the other half any other race.

As much as I love volleyball and your videos, I feel this is racist. I just don't get why people always have to separate because of where they are born or what colour their skin is. I was born black. I didn't have a choice. To not allow other people in because of where or how they are born is RACIST. Its unfair, I would love to play this game, but sorry, I'm black, my family didn't go through the Chinese oppression, just sold as cattle and weren't even thought of as humans. The other comments say it best. IF white guys came together and made a tournament with just white people and maybe some European, people would go crazy. It's funny though, with Chinese people its hit or miss with me. Ill walk down the street, and Chinese people will get all scared, but when shoot weddings they are uncomfortable at first, but once they know I'm not going to rob them, its all fun and games. Accept people. Sigh. Nothing I can do about this anyways, its not like I'm going to lobby for a all black team to go to the 9 man tourny ... ill just play basketball or each some watermelon and chicken...

As someone who is black, how can you be so ignorant? What would you say if someone who was privileged but not black demanded inclusion into the NAACP and their justification was that the group discriminates against anyone who isn't black? The whole point of the organization is for the advancement of a people who has faced and still faces hardship. What would you say to the Americans who argue against getting rid of Black History Month because it is "racist"? What would happen if I demanded to be included in an event by say the Hispanic American Council? Your rebuttal to the original issue could be that Chinese face no discrimination nor hardships in modern day but that wouldn't be honest nor would it be the point. (Simply look at current headlines of the Department of Justice's investigation into Harvard's discrimination against Asian Americans.) Perhaps you should change your perspective of this [singular] tournament from one which is exclusive to one which exists to celebrate a cultural legacy (hence my mention of Black History Month above). If you are ideologically opposed to ALL GROUPS which celebrate any people's origins, history, and differences then I don't know what to tell you. You would have a point though and in that regards I agree with you then that the 9 man tournament is racist. (Also, I understand you're Canadian but hopefully you understand the American references.)
@BMGPP7 жыл бұрын
dchen345 no problem man. Yes, i dont know much about NCPAA but i can speak to black history month example. Everyone is welcomed to learn and be apart of black history month. Its just focuses on the black history and the hardships we had and celebrates the great things black people have done for their countries and for the world. Black history month is not a basketball tournament that only allows black people. This tournament, yes, celebrates chinese hardships and what they went through at that time, but it doesnt include ppl based on their race and based on where they come from. I am not ingnorant, i understand fully that we have BET and other black centric things. But the word is black centric, not black ONLY. You can have Chinese centric events and festivals and allow everyone to participate. But you should know what it feels like to be left out... dont be the same.

Imagine if Black Americans concocted their own annual volleyball tournament that was an outlet to their suffering, hardship, and discrimination and excluded every other ethnicity from playing it. Would that be called racism? In this day and age, inclusion of all races and ethnicity should be accepted in any sports. The sufferings that Asians Americans experienced in the past should be acknowledge but we should learn from the past and tear the walls of separation among people of all colors. Having an annual tournament that does not accept outsiders besides Asians does not help propagate the message of unity and love.

That's not the point. Imagine a white group excluding any other group from playing a game, that would cause a tsunami of backlashes. I'm talking riots, attacks, death threats, you name it.
@dumbunny67 жыл бұрын
Max, this is an interesting subject that has nuances. I think that if a white power group decided to have their own whites-only volleyball tournament in their own community, most people wouldn't care much. However, if they decided to go out of their way to have the tournament at, say, UC Berkeley, then that would set people off, but that would be an incredibly immature thing to do. When unrest occurs, it's important to look at the details of the situation. I'm not making a value judgment regarding exclusion, but when you start talking about riots, you're letting your imagination run away with you.
@jarambarri19977 жыл бұрын

That's ok. 9 man came from a terrible time inflicted by White America back then. It's easy to understand and appreciate once you study the history. But you are more than welcome to enjoy other Chinese celebrations. I'm not Asian and I am 100% in support of cultural traditions, especially by people groups who were beaten up by the early U.S.
