I recall seeing heath ledger on either Conan or Ellen, talking about how he celebrated Christmas in Australia, with shorts, flip flops, and cooking steaks in the backyard. A great Australian, Heath. So under appreciated.

I grew up in Adelaide too. I loved going to the Carols by Candlelight in the city and driving through Lobethal to look at the lights. My family always did a big British Christmas “dinner” (at lunchtime): Roast pork, turkey and ham with roast potatoes and boiled veg, gravy, apple sauce, cranberry sauce and Christmas pudding with brandy white sauce (not custard) for dessert. Mum also had a tradition of making “coconut ice” and “white Christmas” confectionery in the weeks before Christmas, and my grandma would make lovely fruit mince pies.

I’m from Uruguay and I purposely looked this up cause we’re both on the same hemisphere and some things are very similar but our school holidays last three and a half months usually and it is the hole freaking summer. If you don’t have much to do it can even turn boring but you did have all summer to enjoy your toys and would usually be themed around vacation. I lived by the beach and sandboards are classic Christmas presents.

15:07 Well, you forgot to mention that Boxing day tests traditionally only take place at Melbourne Cricket Ground. which is usually packed with 50,000+ or sometimes even 80,000+ people on the Boxing day. I would like to add more to it. i'm from India and even though majority of us don't celebrate Christmas, Boxing day test is still something most cricket fans like me tune into even though boxing day isn't a holiday here, It is even better if India's playing, more so recently as we have beat Australia in the last two boxing day tests we played (in 2018 and 2020). This time we aren't playing, South Africa is but I alongside many cricket fans will for sure be tuning in to watch the boxing day test.

The other place to get Christmas trees (at least in Melbourne) is from the boy scouts. On the Sunday before Christmas, Santa comes down the streets on a CFA (Country Fire Authority) firetruck and chucks out packets of Twisties to the kids.

Well "Santa" does come with raindeer until he touches Aussie ground then he switches to roos as they can deal with the Aussie heat then when he leaves he picks his raindeer back up 😊 well that's what we told our kids, also we put our tree down and pack up all decorations on boxing day whilst watching the yacht race, we try to see all the family leading up to Xmas and on Xmas day then on boxing day we spend that alone at home packing everything up 😁

Your bugs in the tree comment made me remember the slug problem we had one year! It had been a really wet season leading up to Christmas, and we noticed that something was eating the wrapping paper on the gifts under the tree. Then we started noticing little silvery slug tracks in the mornings, but we still couldn't find them. Turns out they'd migrated up the tree and were living up in the angel. :D It was hilarious!

We always referred to the holidays as the Christmas holidays, not summer. I remember the fake snow.. Usually a roast turkey dinner in the middle of the day or late afternoon. The British Christmas pudding is not so usual.Going to church is still done though not as much as in past decades.Alcohol was always left out for Santa, along with a mince pie and carrots for the reindeer.

12:25 The idea of Santa using kangaroos instead of reindeer comes from a 1960 story book and song "Six White Boomers" by Rolf Harris. When I was a kid in the 1970s it was very well known. It has probably fallen out of favour since Rolf Harris was convicted of sexual assault charges in 2014. Here's a good version of the song by another singer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6aaZ3qeh7Rsj80

Hello from Adelaide!!! I recognise that O'Halloran Hill tree farm!! Dunno why you left...best place in the world to live.! Great video. Im am endlessly amused by Americans reacting to Australian videos! LOL We are a Xmas eve family - its also my German background probably...and thats more serious than Xmas day. Xmas eve was always at Nans - but since shes passed its now us with our kids and their partners. Sounds like we have identical xmases! Xmas day is more chilled with my in laws who are English - so theres never been conflict as to where and who Xmas day is shared with. When we were kids we only had 3 terms per year - not 4 - and our Xmas holidays werre even LONGER - we had 2 whole months of holidays - as we had 2 x 13 weeks and a 14 week term back than, but only 2 blocks of 2 week holidays during the year - and so Xmas holidays were long and boring. When we had kids and it was now 4 terms, BOY was I grateful

What I’m aware of is that Boxing Day was a Church tradition that begins with offerings placed in the poor box during Christmas Day church services. The next day the boxes were opened and the Christmas offerings were distributed to the poor in the area. This was long before Christmas gift giving was a common tradition.

Another thing worth noting is that saying "Merry Christmas" to someone in Australia is quite uncontroversial. @@candicemoll8386 I wasn't meaning to say everyone loved it in Australia, just that (almost) no one takes offence at someone wishing them Merry Christmas. Christmas has become pretty much a secular event in Australia resulting it being more widely accepted than some places. Unless you are coming for Christmas specifically September-October (spring) or March-April (autumn)are the best times to visit Australia. Not always but usually the best weather those times of the year. Summer can be 40 degrees Celsius plus which is uncomfortably hot for sightseeing and you run the risk of being limited where you can go and what you can due to bush fires or total fire ban if you are camping. Most years it will be warm enough in late spring or early autumn to go swimming and still enjoy the beach culture.

It depends on where you want to go. Australian is very large, and the weather is very different in the inland areas (when it is very hot);, to the tropical north (aka The Wet - not recommended) , the Australian Alps or Great Dividing Range (where I grew up) and Tasmania when the weather is normally really beautiful but with cool nights. Normally the worst of the heat is after Christmas. I live in Sydney, and the weather is quite variable in December. In fact I used to swap my winter clothes and summer just a couple of weeks before Christmas Day, because there was often cooler weather until just before Xmas. Sydney is often muggy, but it’s not too hot near the coast because of the breezes.

She did say she's a South Australian, right? I am, and that accent sounds almost exactly like the are of Adelaide I grew up in.

Ok coming from a real Aussie: Decorations - we dont mostly. You'll be lucky to see most people to decorate their houses. We consider it to be an American thing to put a whole lot of lights on your house. Snow isn't a thing I ever did with a tree. Most people don't cut down trees to put their house. They get a synthetic tree from Kmart, Target or some other dept store. Who cuts down a tree just for your Christmas? That's just shit and just doesn't make sense as well as just plain irresponsible. Aussies are a pragnatic people so cutting down a tree just to enjoy for a week or so just doesn't make sense to us. Santa changing out the reindeers for Kangaroos is a thing.
