Hey MC. Just a quick clarification, for the steel composition it's actually 0.45% Manganese not Magnesium, the guy who dubbed over the video (me) made that minor error while recording, so we're re-dubbing over the video and we'll put it back up here on KZbin shortly! Also, thank you so much for checking out this version of the Ria! Oh, and one more thing, that Ti Clip is actually an upgraded clip that can be purchased from our website, this version normally ships with the regular steel deep-carry clip.

I have packed a 9 cr blade for around 10 years it’s definitely one of my favorite steels. Very stainless. It doesn’t have bad edge retention and can take a razors edge. I usually just maintain the edge by leather stroping

Hey! Hate to be a bit of a shill, but there hasn't been a ton of performance tests on this steel thus far. I did a cut test with it recently which I'll link below in case you or anyone else is interested. The cut test is similar to Cedrick & Ada's channel, but I use 3/8" rope rather than 10mm as that's much easier for us to get ahold of here in the states. That being said, the AR-RPM9 works out pretty good. I got 320 cuts through the rope before the blade would snag when slicing through paper. It's slightly higher than the 300 cuts I got from the CJRB Kicker in D2, but right in that ballpark. Even more recently, I did a cut test of the standard Ria in 12C27 and got 105 cuts before it snagged. Altogether, for the extra ~$20, you're getting a hell of an upgrade in the steel as well as the micarta. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXjVqmSNad-Nibs
@MountainFisher
@MountainFisher 3 жыл бұрын
I think Cedric got around 230 something cuts before it started to snag on the thicker rope, but he put a mirror polish on his, and his lock broke too. The locking mechanism failed. I do not put a mirror finish on my EDC I put a working edge on it, also called a butcher's edge. Try filleting a fish with a mirror finish on the edge, you go to skin it and you'll just cut through the skin. I only use a mirror edge for my leather cutting knives or wood carving 63 HRC hardness. I even strop the blade on my utility knife with 16,000 grit diamond compound for leather. I use diamond for mirror polishing, much faster than polishing compound.

Those kind of "tests" are so flawed it's almost hard to express just how much. If you want to test abrasion resistance, you could easily and more accurately do it with 10x less effort and time and 10x less use and damage as well. It would also be more accurate. Cutting rope then slicing paper is really a very shitty test. Considering ever knife has different blade geometry, that's way more relevant to influence this "test" than the geniuses who think these tests mean much realize. If you want an actual test then get a consistent abrasive, and consistent edge, and see how much abrasive is needed to take the edge from a determined highly keen acute state to a determined less keen state. You will have more accurate results, with less effort, less cutting, less time, and you'll actually be measuring the differences between steels and their resistance to abrasion rather than basically measuring how well a given knife cuts rope then slices paper, which is oddly specific. Honestly, even if you replaced copy paper with something like a paper towel, you'd have a better test that takes less time and effort. Knives with really good geometry can easily slice copy paper even when they're totally dull, and other factors like hardness and toughness are being introduced in the so called "test" the way you describe it because edge inclusions like rolling or chips will affect the ability to slice copy paper. A better test would use more controlled abrasion in a manner that won't introduce factors like hardness ie rolling or toughness ie chipping, and would detect changes in the edge keenness at a much smaller level. For instance, Get a consistent edge, keener the better, use a controlled force to abrade that edge against a known mildly abrasive media, then measure how quickly the keenness is reduced . Then again, CATRA tests already exist.

This was more or less what I had kind of assumed it would be, but I don't necessarily find that disappointing at all. Im just sick of checking specs on designs that catch my eye, and seeing that it is in fact sporting 8cr13mov. If its in the D2 and 14c range with a little mix and match as far as properties, I find that absolutely refreshing. I don't even loathe 8cr like so many seem to, I just really like the idea of a bit of variety for the price range. It marks progress I think, and on the heels of such growth over the past few years, its exciting to think that its only gonna keep getting better for us working class knife nuts. Thanks for the info M.C. great content as always. Cheers

"...the D2 and 14c range..." Dude, those two steels are pretty different. 14c28n much more of a stainless yet MY experience has been it's still as good at holding an edge. Far superior to D2 IMO.

@rickyricardo3551 Жыл бұрын
@Paul M And this stuff is essentially 9cr which has a good bit more carbon than 14c so it should have similar property's to both steel(d2 and 14c) ie edge retention and stainlessnes.

I'll take edge retention over corrosion resistance any time. I use my knives and work with them, but I also clean them all the time. I've NEVER got corrosion or rust on my knives. Not even my high carbon knives when I lived 12 years in High Humidity South Carolina. Thanx for the video my Bladed Brother 👍 ⚔️ ✝️ 🇺🇲
@jeffhicks8428
@jeffhicks8428 Жыл бұрын
It would be amazing if one day edc bros actually learned how to use and maintain knives, and also learned how to use the words they throw around like edge retention. Corrosion is actually a factor in edge retention. If your blade rusts at the edge, then guess what? No more edge. So is toughness. So is hardness. And so is abrasion resistance, which is what knife bros actually mean when they say "edge retention" they just dont seem to understand that. I don't understand why knife bros are so over obsessed with steel in the first, but I especially dont understand why they're so mega focused on the least relevant thing in most cases, which is abrasion resistance. But I think it's likely because most of them can't actually maintain a knife to save their lives, they don't actually know to sharpen a knife. I think this is why they're so obsessed with it. They seem to think they're gonna find magic steel. Only issue is every steel goes dull with use. The more resistance to abrasion the slower they will dull but the longer they will take to make sharp again. Considering the actual differences between actually available and used steels, knife bros are all focused on all the wrong things, on dumb shit.

I have heard that many have lockup issues. Do either of the models your handling have any lock rock or blade play?? I heard there were lockup issues, and I really wanted to try one, but I don’t sell knives and I don’t want to sell a knife that doesn’t lock well. What weird makeup and this looks like powder metal, that has a high chromium content, and slightly leaning more towards a less corrosion resistant D2. I have never ever had any problems with tough use on 14c28n. I’m full of D2 but I have chipped too many tips and I’m not a fan of sharpening it and I used to sharpen every day and hone, and hit two stones with at least 4 knives each morning for work in my culinary career. I don’t mind sharpening constantly and I can sharpen in minutes - D2 is just brittle, and chippy with no corrosion resistance and will always stain easily. I can’t WAIT until we move past the D2 hype. Ever since it started I was upset to see if replacing even 9cr18mov or 12 or 14c. At this point, I’d prefer a 440c because I have less of it and I appreciate it more. I’m really done with D2, and I have no desire for it. This may be welcome change for me personally.

With two knives in 2 different steels, and with all things being equal, It'll perform like most of the 440 class steels, i.e. 440B/C, N690, VG-10, 9cr18 etc. Depending on how well the powder forming process is, you should see an increase in edge stability, toughness, and reductions in chipping.
