Gotta give CJRB credit, they are pulling out decently done D2 and their RPM9 (not the first couple runs of it,, they had it vastly to soft that stuff was a nightmare to sharpen and edge retention was a joke in talking about once they dialed it in) is really killing it in edge retention per dollar. The rpm9 crags at 35 bucks on Amazon are absolutely hard to beat, your getting a solid design and the edge retention your getting for that kinda money is hard to beat. From my testing current rpm9 models are out cutting kizer n690/VG10 models by a far bit and at close to half the price it's a really superb value in a steel that is pretty damn good across the board. It just don't like to be polished, 400 to 600g and it will shock you at how good it is, taking it much more then a 1000g and it starts to slick off really quickly but 400 to 600 the Bite is excellent and the overall performance hits well above its price indicates.

Hearing that rpm9 was basically powder formed 9cr was like receiving a “budget” gift from the gods. 9cr is a highly, highly under-appreciated budget steel. It holds an edge, isn’t too picky about edge geometry, strops back and (most importantly to me) sharpens up to stupendous levels of aggression for a stainless steel. Like any steel, rmp9 still needs to be processed correctly but artisan seems to have dialed that in pretty well. My Ria and Scorias exhibit many of the same qualities I get from the 9cr Civivis and to be honest, that was all I wanted from this steel, personally…

Not even powder but spray form 8crmov. Spray form is a little better than ingot steel but not as good as powder metallurgy.

I prefer the AR-RPM9 due to the fact that it is legitimate stainless steel, while D2 falls short @12%, having sharpened both, the AR-rpm9 is easier to get a good edge, the D@ is tough but troublesome to sharpen for me.

this was an all around excellent testing video on a steel battle which I have been anticipating for a while. The results are really favorable, and its so cool that we can get these steels, on knives like these for the price! its amazing, and honestly, these are a couple of knives where its worth it to have both. I mean...just look at em. one is the quintessential work knife, and the other is great for an evening casual carry.

Thanks and yes I feel the same way about both of them. They are such a bargain and if you haven’t tried out the CJRB Feldspar it’s one of my favorites from them and you can get it in D2, RPM9 and blade hq has one in s35vn 👌🏻

Good real world test. Basically, it looks like budget steels can be pretty darn good and unlike some of the more expensive steels that will hold an edge longer, you don't need to send them back to the factory to be resharpened.

I haven't had to sharpen my Sea Snake yet and it's my only AR-RPM9 blade so far. I like how it fared on the Crag in this test. Even though I'm not a huge cleaver fan, it looked like it did a good job on those tests in either steel. It might be worth a try and then I'd have a second knife in RPM9 too. Hmmm. 🤔 Thanks, Nick.

I haven't had any luck with the new steel in two different knives, this one got sent to me by mistake as I ordered the D2 Crag and I did order a Scoria in AR-RPM9, But both were below Rc 58 in hardness and I sent them back. When I got the D2 it was 59.8 Rc which wasn't great, but ok.
@billm7166 Жыл бұрын
If you think that is bad try carrying a surgical steel bladed knife like me for 2 years because it's all you can get. I just decided to upgrade to the kicker with d2 steel because I use the knife then have to sharpen it and I can get this shaving sharp freehand sharpening so I know a better steel I'll get better results.

I have not experienced a problem sharpening the ar-rpm9 but haven’t taken it past a toothy edge yet. So far I’m impressed with the edge retention. Nothing scientific, just gut feel ED use. I haven’t sharpened through any potential factory belt edge heat treat damage yet, so it might get even better? For certain it isn’t Fidget Toy Steel like 14c28n. It way outperforms that.
