What is CO2 boost control and why would you need it?
At the 2019 TX2K event many cars were running CO2 boost control so Andre took the opportunity to run you through the pitfalls of some conventional boost control methods and the lack of control range they offer.
Andre introduces the CO2 controlled alternative that avoids these issues, but also comes with some limitations of its own.

An excellent, concise (basic) explanation of the co2 system and how it works. Good job... Most people cant get information across so eloquently. Thanks! 😊

I'm begrudgingly realizing I might need to go to CO2 control with my VGT setup. I run a wastegate for boost control (simply plumbed with boost signal to the bottom port), but when I close the vanes at mid-range RPM, even with my stiffest wastegate spring, the exhaust pressure is high enough to blow the wastegate wide open until I open the vanes, killing my spool. Thanks for the video, super helpful!

Is there a way we can use exhaust pressure instead of co2 to save weight?

Taz, it would be nice to see a more in depth video on CO2 systems. I noticed at 0:10 the CO2 cylinder has two regulators and two lines. This looks like a setup with a higher pressure side and a lower pressure side. One line is also much bigger than the other. Are teams integrating fire suppression and boost control together? Are any practice standards developing with the systems?

Would there not be a better way than using external gasses but rather with boost valve control ie line diverting air back around to the waste gas pushing back or air to electric based off psi

Can you "reload" your bottle with the air from your boost system in a bidirectional system?
@reminoel483
@reminoel483 5 жыл бұрын
No you would need a big tank because air when compressed isnt in its liquid form like C02... and a compressor would still be needed to achieve higher pressure than the intake boost pressure already available

Why hasn’t anyone developed a controller that’s powered by an electric motor?

They have, mostly on internal wastegates. Ford and Honda already use them already

So the limit to this system is the resolution of the system to open and close the wastegate quickly enough to maintain the optimum boost pressure for the entire run. Sounds easy 😐

Lol at people bashing using compressed air. Its exactly how it's done in a modern heavy truck for example. Where you use pressurised air from the tanks for waste gate regulation. Being able to open the wg at part load is critical for fuel consumption and thermal management in that case.

Good luck building a fast drag who's day job is being a heavy truck. I think you might struggle to find more opposite applications than those two lol The point here is that what works for one application won't for another - Taz.

@@hpa101 the turbo won't care in this case :) . The point was that pressurised air is an OEM solution fir this exact problem and not such a crazy solution as some commentera thought it would be.

I didn't see any comments saying it was crazy in general sorry, just no good for drag racing/motorsports. There is never one perfect solution for every application, nothing wrong with that as part of the fun is figuring out what works best where and why I reckon =) - Taz.

I work on class 8 trucks and have not seen them use compressed air from the air tanks to regulate the turbo wastegate. Most use vgt or no wastegate at all...

CO2 is an inert gas which means if there is a leak then there are no potential flame igniting problems. Compressed air and things like oil/gas are a bad combination.

Size factor. Co2 under pressure sits as a liquid. When this liquid is depressurised it will supply a way bigger gas volume that air at the same pressure.
