Western tanks, including 14 Challenger 2s from the UK, Abrams from the US and Leopard 2s from Germany, are to begin being sent to Ukraine to aid its fight against Russia's invasion.
It is hoped the battle tanks will play a pivotal role for Kyiv in helping to repel an expected spring offensive by Moscow.
For the Ukrainian tank advances to be effective, they need to use Combined Arms Manoeuvre - but what does this mean?

Ukraine is getting everything it needs for extensive combined arms operations this year. The Challenger 2s and Leopard 2s for heavy direct firepower. For heavy mobile artillery support, in addition to what it has now, the UK is sending 30 AS-90s, the US just sent 18 Paladins, between Denmark and France there are 31 more Caesars going to Ukraine. An undisclosed number of Archers. The US just ramped up 155mm shell production by 500% to 90,000 shells a month so Ukraine won't run out of those. For the mechanized infantry support Ukraine already has hundreds of BMPs. With the new addition of 50 Bradleys, 40 Marders and 50 CV90s. Which will almost certainly be added to as well as more Challenger 2s and Leopard 2s as needed. AFU tanks will have all the infantry support they need to protect them from Russian ATGMs. We've trained Ukraine in combined arms operations starting in 2015. They know what they're doing and have the means more than ever now. We no longer even talk about Russian Battalion Tactical Groups which were supposed to be their combined arms teams. They were always too light on infantry and now with such losses do they even have any real infantry capable of supporting tanks in combined arms operations. When conditions especially hard ground conditions allow this battle to go far more mobile later this year I think we are going to see this discrepancy become the decisive factor in this war.

@@pauldespre Another 56 Bradleys? Yah, Ukraine is going to get everything it needs. And Strykers are nasty, a cousin of mine led a company in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fast, good protection from ATGMs and RPGs with screens and good fire power. Plus the hundreds of MRAPs the US has sent and many hundreds more light mine protected armor from around the world. The AFU is now one of the most mobile forces in the world, when the ground conditions are right they will blitz the Russians all over the Donbass.

Ukraine uses like 7000 shells a day. So 90K will last only about 2 weeks. Number of modern tanks are very few. West needs to ramp up production of everything to really give the Ukrainians what they need. Hope they do and end the war sooner rather than later.

At its core, combined arm's operations is placing all the tools needed to win on the battlefield under one commander. In practice, successful combined arms manuever means getting inside the enemy's decision-making cycle and beating them to the punch. Unsuccessful combined arms operations degenerate into a huge slugging match, which turns a war of movement into a war of attrition.

British DoD should consider expanding the Army, especially the mechanized maneuver component in face of the current security challenges. There may need to be a reconsideration of new tank production in the UK, since it is not always, that international partners may be relied on equipment and ammunition.

The Abrams, Challenger, and Leopards will all help Ukraine. But only if they are used in large numbers and, as stated... with infantry support. I don't know if enough infantry fighting vehicles are being sent... in fact, like the armor going over there, I don't think enough are being sent to have a huge impact. It really would be better if just one tank type was going... the logistics will be a nightmare. And an old military axiom states: _"amateurs discuss strategy while professionals discuss logistics"._

Western tanks were designed for Western doctrine. Combined arms like the video discussed. The problem is Ukraine is still stuck on old Soviet style doctrine just like the Russians. They want to use tanks as blunt instruments. That's why there's been so many tanks lost in this war because neither side knows what the fvck there doing.

It requires extensive training to master and professional NCOs and officers at all levels who have the ability to make calls on the fly in battle. Ukraine has that, Russia doesn't. Which is why Russia is now totally reliant on set piece WW I style offensives with massive artillery bombardments then the advance of human wave attacks to overwhelm shell shocked survivors of the bombardment. Which still result in massive Russian casualties. When Ukraine is ready, their offensive maneuver formations are going to tear the mostly static Russian military to pieces.

Still to this day do not understand why we did not establish a perimeter around Kabul and transport those vehicles and air lift those supplies to Ukraine. We absolutely saw the troop build-up along the Ukrainian border for a year and when the Taliban became bolder and the Afghani security forces began surrendering without a fight we 100% could have just airlifted and flown everything out, hell we already had control of the largest airstrip in the country. Then boom 5 months later there is a full fledged invasion of a country right next door to NATO allies? Night vision, APCs, Black Hawks, small arms everything we are paying for AGAIN because of this administration's short-sightedness and geopolitical ignorance.
