As a huge D'Angelo fan and being an Indian boy who constantly has their mother forcibly putting that white stuff across my forehead, when dude put peanut butter across Donald's forehead while inducting him into the D'Angelo spiritual society, it hit on a whole bunch of levels.

Rare we get to see Black surrealism or maybe Black Hyperrealism because many of the situations are more than relatable on so many lvls.

Could be interpreted as black expressionism as well.

Great insight! Also, there’s an inside joke most won’t get that Donald was making, the fact that D’Angelo doesn’t look like D’Angelo 😂 My big brother plays his character is this episode and I’m so proud of him! Thank you for this!

Death has been a very big talking point this season as well as purpose of life. Something about what Blue Bloods wife said about how he didn't rap for fun, but he rapped so he can be "The realist" yet he alienated people from his art, to Earn not wanting success out of ambition but out of spite, and now seeing Al's ambition in his career shift, theirs a lot of parallels happening.

A possible reason why Earn wasn’t bugged out by “D’Angelo” knowing his dream (he looked shocked initially) was the “what makes you think the hands are doing you harm?” revelation. That’s definitely gonna affect his perspective from this point on.

Also, listen to his entire discog but especially “Voodoo” by D’angelo. I can’t give that album any more praise it hasn’t already received but be patient with it; it’s a slow burner.

I’m so glad someone brought up the D’Angelo character bringing up Earn’s dream. I was literally jaw dropped watching that scene and thought I was the only one who noticed it.

I feel like the d’angelo thing was a counter to al’s story on how tryin to be super deep is just as clout chasing but also weird like when the mask falls and his like “you really want to sign me?”

I've been to that Rally's. It is weird as hell just from the outside. Rundown looking, but fully automated ordering. I think there was only one person inside and they just handed me my food and didn't say anything to me.

Right. I’d also argue that season 3’s opening scene takes from Earn’s dream as well-two guys in the boat.

A lot of great analysis packed into 5 minutes. The D'Angelo portions were very confusing, even while being familiar with him so I'm glad to see you were able to garner meaning from it.

I think the scene where earn leaves D’Angelo With im not gonna sign you but you have a good voice basically details how earn could be 50/50 on exploitation or he could be protecting It. He could be wanting to subconsciously exploit the image of D’Angelo like the industry did hypersexualizing him. But the talent is there. Same with Alfred he knew It was image of the ywa not the talent . Earns was opposite he wanted the image not the talent . Exploitation comes in 2 ways i suppose.

I dont think that Gaga and Eminem apply to thw YWA stuff cuz different from those on the episode, they got real talent. Of course, I believe Usher and Akon saw an opportunity since is much more easy to make money and sucess with a white person than a black - unfortunaly is how the industrie works. But Gaga and Eminem aren't getting reconized by appropriating black music/culture. Of course, Eminem is a rapper and he is not black, but his lyrics are abt his real life issues and stuff, smt we see in 8Mile and that's why even OG rappers respect him. I'm still tryng to understand the D'Angelo part, I feel that there is so much symbolism in every aspect since the room Earn was waiting, all the details ..

I’d agree, partially however. All the examples I mentioned besides Akon and Gaga I knew of. In the case of the latter, apparently Akon made millions off of the success of Gaga upon signing her. So much so, it’s thanks to Gaga he was able to sell his shares to Interscope and retire. He explained it being a business move because he understood the lifetime of artists in the industry. To my understanding, the purpose of the YWA meeting was to establish a contingency plan in the event an artist (or Alfred) loses relevancy and still has ways to eat.
@johnindigo54772 жыл бұрын
It's also easy to call these singers and rappers icons now but who knew about gaga or Justin beiber in 2007, or em in 98. They were talented definetly but was thier massive success guaranteed, aside from thier whiteness promising a large audience?
@phvros2 жыл бұрын
When you put it that way, it’s up for discussion. There’s probably a handful of upcoming talent who’ve gotten nowhere despite having that industry push.
