I would also add Motorhead. Ace of Spades is the origin and influence of births hardcore and Discharge. We have to thank Phil Taylor for D-BEat and the standard double bass drum of hardcore, noisecore. grindcore, speed/thrash/death metal.
@DBeatDad
@DBeatDad 4 жыл бұрын
I would agree. Phil Is one of my main influences in the style I personally feel I put into D-Beat drumming I've done. I was just trying to keep it simple with the definition of the "D" for D-Beat. Anything could be argued, there's probably a band somewhere that likely played it even earlier and we don't even know yet! Thanks for watching.

Thank you so much for giving Philthy credit. Once he got his grubby little paws on a second bass drum at the tail end of '78 he pretty much laid the groundwork for ALL double bass kick styles, including the inspiration he gave to Discharge for D-Beat. Philthy's high hat technique also continues to blow me away. He was a real innovator.

Actually the D-beat (the original and extremely frequent old school hardcore beat) is played with evenly placed crash hits that pulse on the 4th-beats like a metronome in 4/4. So, 1st and 2nd crash is played on the kick and snare. 2nd and 3rd off-beat kicks (in 8th notes) are placed on each side of the 3rd crash and the 4th crash is played on the 4th quarter note (second time the snare is played). I've played with various HC bands in the 80s, sometimes drumming myself. I've also studied Garry Maloney's style for safety's sake before making this comment, and it checks out! Last but not least, I love your drumming! Thanks for uploading!

sadly a lot of us used to make fun of all the dis-clones back in the day. mostly light-heartedly, but i never knew some of those bands are actually really good... never even heard a Disclose record, let alone owned one. which is also funny because To What End? was one of my favorite bands growing up (altho they took things pretty far from dis-land), and i loved a lot of other bands who used a d-beat, even saw Tragedy live, just didn't get the whole aesthetic of the dis- bands at the time. to be fair, for a minute there it felt like they were coming off an assembly line every two seconds... but it's fun to revisit it all now as more of a sub-subgenre, rather than a "clone" thing. and it's also wild to realize in retrospect how much Discharge influenced the metal scene... kinda ironic considering the bizarre flop of their Grave New World era (when they actually tried to be a more straightforward metal band.) love the channel, btw, seems like we might come from a similar era.

great video man, lots of useful information. Like you say, all around the world musicians have picked up the d-beat and played it creating new different styles

Thank you. Correct, that's why I wouldn't point to anyone saying one way is better than another. Its all about personal opinion of what you like. I just wanted to point out a lot of great drummers over the years have evolved it past its simplicity and still sounds great!

Thank you! I had a very embarrassing moment yesterday at a jam. The bass player wrote a song and said that it’s supposed to be “d beat” I had no clue what he was talking about. We’re basically a skate punk band the best I use the most that seems very similar is what I call the “Smelly” beat. Basically the beat that NOFX has used for 30+ years

Nothing to be embarrassed about. You would be surprise how many people still don't know what D-Beat really is!

I think it was Garry Bushell did a review of a Discharge gig with the comment "endless versions of the same pneumatic drum beat" Yep - and its brilliant. What is is they say? "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery". The number of clone bands Discharge spawned says they made a mark and did something very right.

Also another drummer that seemed to have a major impact on (fast punk) not exactly d-beat....but smelly from (nofx) definitely nailed his drum style...which seems to be unmatched over all these years! His kicks are clean and snare strikes are pin point accurate!

motörhead definitely played a huge role on this, the philthy lineup era was full of this. there is a lot to be also said of the inclusion of dbeat on thrash/crossover records, like sodom’s ausgebombt and d.r.i for instance.

I find it quite interesting to learn there is a real technique to what sounds like a simple/primitive drumming style. I also think the most useful tip for anyone is just practice. Anyone can learn to do just about anything- we've seen quadriplegics paint beautiful paintings- it really is a matter of putting in the work. the kid who doesnt want to do his math homework is not going to get good grades on his math test- but the one who does, will.

As a Guitarist I still don't know what charged GBH are doing rhythmically on the song "passenger on the menue" from the city baby attacked by rats album. It sounds very weird, like the guitar is not with the drums. I don't know, I'm not a drummer. It's hard to explain.

in the late 70's bands like Rainbow, Riot had that galloping sound. The latter in particular is often underrated, but they were quite extreme for 1977.

Wouldn't that basically just be a polyrhythmic blast beat? Playing d-beats really fast almost always ends up with a "slower" triplet rhythm on the kick part
