From the testimonies I’ve read, most people come away lucky with crank hub slippage. It’s rare that it actually ruins the engine. That being said, I’ll be getting a crank hub kit installed as soon as I pay off my M3.

this isn't about crank hub slippage its about using a low gear while going too fast and mechanically over revving the engine floating the valves etc, the hub slippage just adds to the issues but its from user error

Good video! When you have it rebuilt for the love of god get a full pinned crank hub fix, don’t even bother with a capture plate, I think by the nature of your mis shift you were lucky as it completely spun the CH so it was free to spin, if you’d spun it on a normal down shift you’d be looking at a complete rebuild now, pistons, head the lot. Insane crank hub fix is the way or Gintani, from a fellow 680bhp M4 and S55 owner. 👌🏽

Great Vid and welcome to the club. Didn't the guys check the flywheel indicator ? That is a more easy way of determining weather timing is off and how much it is off. Bummer, I was just lucky with ca 1.5degrees indicating (from calculations) that there could not have been any contact. Honestly cannot believe it is only one (with an engine running ca 100 revs per second at 6000rpm they should all be damaged/contacted). I would expect all valves to have touched, which is sad but great as well --> stage 3 engine with forged cross drilled crank, carillo rods, omega pistons and some oil gallery improvements -->8500rpm tralalala fuel to noise converter.

Hey Joe, I've got an m135i, the crank hub spun last month - think work was done before I got it and the crank bolt wasn't tightened up properly and came loose. All my exhaust valves were bent but the top end has been rebuilt and is perfect now so hopefully similar for you as I feared it could've been much worse!

@Nyx_88888
@Nyx_88888 Жыл бұрын
@@cgkperformance true you cannot money shift a dct. It is more fool proof than a manual. the money shift and non keyed crank hub issues on s55 are different. in this case the money shift also caused the hub to shift some and disrupt the timing even more. if the over rev was only slight and the hub didn't shift it might not have caused the valve damage but anytime you go over the redline you can have valve float which is the same as timing being off, in this case you also had the hub throw off the timing so probably made it worse. the s55 non keyed hubs have no mechanical benefit and bmw def keyed the hubs on m3s before and after the f80. If you have a dct don't use the kickdown bc the suddwnt change in engine speed can make it shift. it is an overblown issue, if it makes you uneasy you can spend a fortune to put a keyed one in that cannot shift , no matter what it wasn't the fault of the hub in this case, it was the money shift over rev user error. People seem to think here the hub is the issue but people aren't that clever maybe idk. Lesson here is don't money shift and of course no on does this on purpose

Joe's issue is he money shifted. The crank hub could have been good for many more miles. If it had been pinned already the result would have been far worse than it slipping during the money shift. All the valves would likely have been destroyed. Having said that, while it's all apart it would be worth pinning it now, for peace of mind and just make sure not to money shift in the future!d

@NomadJRG
@NomadJRG Жыл бұрын
@BrendanC-ru9zi money shift is when you meant to go up a gear but end up shifting down. Joe's car is a manual and he was trying to go into 5th as he was at the max rpm for 4th but instead went into 3rd. This overreved the engine and caused the crankhub to spin and valve float. That's why his engine is broken. It's not the typical hard kickdown on a tuned car that spins the crankhub scenario here.
