Thank you for understanding what goth actually is and noting that someone who is goth may not be wearing black.

I stumbled upon this video by chance and a light bulb dawned on me. My boyfriend always called me goth but I never felt like I was goth simply because goth is so much more than I know or understand. I know goth is music-related, which was one of the reasons why I didn't think it applied to me. I like dark themes, Victorian clothing, bones, insects and dark colors. I recognized myself in this video and am very happy to have found it

Lol goth is actually a lot less than you could “know or understand”, give yourself some more credit. It’s just a word we use to describe dark post-punk that’s started in the early 80’s. That’s literally it. Listen to the music of The Cure. Bauhaus. Siouxsie and the Banshees. Bands inspired by them. Like what you hear ? Congrats. You’re goth. It’s really that simple

Since I was little I feel like I had a tendency towards gothic because of my peculiar tastes like going to funerals and watching crime shows.

For visual art, one of the greatest darkly inclined artists is definitely H.R Giger. He's works are quite literally inspired from nightmares. He did visual design for R. Scott's Alien movie, which is itself one of the greatest darkly inclined films of all times (being inspired from gothic horror), along with works like Dark City, Blade Runner and others. Speaking of Blade Runner, cyberpunk with its dystopian high tech, low life themes would certainly classify--and I think there's clear crossover with gothic subculture, namely cybergoth. Which circles back to music: besides the OG gothic rock there are electronic genres that are inspired by the more solemn, introspective and dark themes of gothic rock. Synthwave, darksynth, futurepop, EBM from artists like VNV Nation, Seabound, Covenant. For literature, less obvious darkly inclined genre is modern sci-fi. Everyone has heard of Liu Cixin's Three-Body Problem, but before that there was Charles R. Pellegrino and George Zebrowski's The ------- Star (I probably can't write the actual title because of YT comment system) and Peter Watt's Rifters series, Blindsight and Echopraxia (start with Blindsight and Echopraxia, then read Rifters trilogy because the latter gets way, way heavy and it's easy to bounce off if you're not that darkly inclined already). All these books go way into very fundamental existential questions and in Watt's case to the deepest corners of human neuropsychology to explore what actually makes a human mind tick and what happens if things go horribly wrong (also, best vampires ever).

I usually dress industrial goth, but the music I tend to listen to tends to lean towards Extreme Progressive Metal, with bands like Opeth, Enslaved, and Ne Obliviscaris, Progressive Metal, like Dream Theater, Tool, Soen, Technical Death Metal bands like Fleshgod Apocalypse, Beyond Creation, Obscura, Darker, and more melancholy Prog Rock, like Riverside, Lunatic Soul, and Airbag, Avant-Garde Metal, like Unexpect, Mr. Bungle, Kayo Dot and I also like the genres you mentioned in the video.

In short, fashion-wise, I prefer a very specific look, but as far as music genres, I'm pretty diverse. Oh, forgot to mention, I also love Jpop/JRock/JMetal because of my love for anime.

Came across this on my feed, but I love how informed this video is 🖤 I remeber hearing this term when I watched goth KZbinrs discuss this and the big difference with darkly inclined and goth. But you really did nail it with the examples and showing dark artworks and showing Tim Burton stuff since I went the darkly inclined route in my baby bat days before really getting into the goth subculture. I love how you are presenting this without being dismissive and handling the topic with care 🖤🖤🖤

My favorite books as a child were Edgar Allen Poe’s stories of all genres which he invented, but also Robt. Lewis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden Of Verse and Olive Beaupré Miller’s Illustrated My Bookhouse series (with the green hardcovers). By age of 9 I was reading John Ciardi’s translation of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno (never got to Purgatorio or Paradiso) with great interest then into Tolkien via The Hobbit. I read LoTR and Silmarillion about a dozen times. Then Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker, H.P. Lovecraft and all the Cthulhu Mythos writers, Arthur Machen, Charles Beaudelaire, Lautreamont’s Maldoror, Villiers de l’Isle-Adam’s Axel and Là-Bas by J.K. Huysmans, all by 18.

Great art. I do spooky art some times when I'm not painting psychedelic fantasy. Your figures looked great and I don't see many with your style in this modern world. I see a refrence to golden age horror comic artists. The kind that worked on ec comics books in the 50s and would move on to waren publishing in the 70s. I also see a little amono in there too. All artists have a hard time with their past work no matter how great it is. All it took for me to change that attitude was to have accomplished arts say they liked my work. Family tend to have low standards for art. Your art is fantastic thank you for showing it. it takes a lot to show pieces of your self.

I understand the use of this term in some instances but honestly, "darkly inclined" or the even more redundant sounding "gothly inclined" were terms used to discredit other goths saying "they're not actually goth" because of lack of mention of the music. There is more to goth than just music and the goth Karens have been trying to belittle others by saying they're "lesser or not goth" if they/it has nothing to do with the music. Fact is, there IS more to goth than just music and saying otherwise is quite frankly attempting to take the goth out of goth so to speak and it's incredibly off putting to some and especially those who are newly getting into the subculture. I've even seen some so afraid of upsetting the goth Karens that they don't even call themselves goth anymore and call them selves "darkly inclined" instead which is pretty sad. Goth is more so interest based rather than just music. Fashion, aesthetic, atmosphere, as well as several other aspects and even a whole mindset are equally relevant parts of the subculture. Goth is a whole conglomeration of several things including the music but not limited to just that.
@ClamorDiGilgamesh4 күн бұрын
No, I'm sorry but the goth subculture was built around goth music. There is not "more" to goth than the music. You need to research how the subculture actually came about. If you like the fashion and aesthetic, that doesn't make you goth. You're just alternative. No one who is actually a goth would believe that it is anything more than the music. People that try to make it something it isn't are just desperate to be a part of something they simply are not because they have different music tastes. It's annoying to be a part of a music based subculture and have your lifestyle dwindled down into nothing more than "aesthetic" and a fetish.
@Ralodosmovo4 күн бұрын
@@ClamorDiGilgamesh Yes I'm aware the music goth scene is what started the goth movement of the late 70s early 80s but saying it's only about music is just incorrect. If you took away everything but the music from goth then there would be no fashion, no spooky aesthetic, no black, no seeing beauty in darkness, no anything. That'd just be hollow and pointless and is fabricated by those who want to be in control over what gets to be called goth. Honestly all this infighting is much worse than those from outside the subculture being ignorant because there's a difference between being ignorant and deliberately misinforming just for some petty gain which there is sadly A LOT of in the subculture today. I for one am someone who will always call all this out when I see it as I run several very successful and active goth communities. Further more, I never said anything about the "fetish" as I too get pissed when I see creeps doing that to us. All that being said, I too know that not just anything can be called goth and I'm not trying to justify that either. I'm simply saying it's just wrong to try and take the rest of the things out of goth because it's not only about music.
@Thekawaiiasian101vid4 күн бұрын
@@Ralodosmovoid have to agree with you. i love the music but then there are those who are more inclined to the gothic literature than anything else and i think (maybe an unpopular opinion) that they should feel free to call themselves goth if they so wished. gothic fiction like dracula goes back further than bauhaus anyway
@carlab304 күн бұрын
So glad you wrote this. It honestly feels very racist when I hear them screaming it’s a music genre as if gothic things didn’t exist before goth rock and no one outside of them can be a part of the culture. It actually started turning me off from the community because they make you feel like you’re some kind of imposter, when in actuality, you like everything that has to do with goth. At this point, it’s very childish and I’m tired of hearing people say that. I realized I was goth later in life due to being black and not seeing a lot of black goths or hearing it mentioned. Even growing up, it was always labeled a white subculture. But I realized I had always been into goth type things, but just didn’t realize it due to that. Plus, i didn’t grow up listening to goth rock, but listened to a lot of darker, solemn music that can be considered to have gothic themes. I have realized I liked a lot of dark wave, but just wasn’t informed about the culture at all. It does make you feel pushed out just because you don’t vibe with a certain type of music, but you love everything else about goth culture. Plus, it’s really annoying to keep running into videos with people screaming this like little children.
