The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, was in part popularized outside Mexico in the Disney film “Coco.” But the celebration actually dates back over 3,000 years. Emmanuel Ortega aka Dr. Babelito, is co-host of the KZbin channel “Unsettling Journeys.” He told Inside Edition Digital that the tradition is an opportunity for families “to invite their deceased loved ones to partake in a celebration, more specifically, a dinner party.”

I love the Day of the Dead encourages people to celebrate the positive impact people had that they have lost. Sadly this year we have lost a lot of lives do the Coronavirus. I think this year the only Silver Lining we could have so far is at least remembering the ones we lost in a positive way!

Little Story (also true story) In history class we had to do a group project on immigrants and our group got Latin-American and ironically the whole group was latino, Mexican, ect (The teacher didn't even realize he did that). The teacher came around to see how we were doing, then he came to our table and we all started talking then he asked out opinion on Day of the Dead and Halloween mixed to American's. Some people in my group said it was fine but some said it's not (including me). My reasoning was that it was to respect our passed loved ones and celebrate them not to dress up and get candy. Thank you for reading my story and please dont associate Day of the Dead with Halloween!❤🇲🇽

If you're talking about the Catrina or Calavera Garbancera costumes then it's not wrong for anyone to dress up as a Catrina or Catrin. She's not sacred and she was a critique of Mexicans who preferred European culture over Mexican. She was a Posada Skeleton and Posada's Skeletons were about conveying that it didn't matter what your race, social status, or morals were, in the end everyone would end up a Skeleton. She also didn't have anything to do with Día de Muertos until Diego Rivera made her the personification of Death in one of his paintings. After that people started including her in their altars.

Día de Muertos is not Halloween however Día de Muertos did end up influencing Halloween in Mexico. At least where I'm from when we went trick or treating we would ask for our Calaverita or little skull instead of saying trick or treat and people would give us candy. It was also a way for us to preserve our traditions because before Coco and Hollywood cared for Day of the Dead, it was starting to fade away as a tradition and kids were prefering Halloween. Which is why schools started doing activities to teach kids about our tradition and why you saw Día de Muertos stuff in Halloween.
