Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not ‘Mexican Halloween’ as some people think. We’re taking a closer look at the history of this holiday and meeting with makeup artist Judith Bautista for a skull makeup design inspired by the Tequila Cazadores Limited Edition bottle.

The truth is that Day Of The Dead isn't about painting your faces or dressings up at all. Day of the dead is something more sacred and spiritual than that.

☹ Everyone talks about 'Coco' but never 'The Book of Life.' Speaking of movies, did you know that the opening scene of 'SPECTRE'-a freakin' JAMES BOND flick!-led the Mexican government to create an annual Day of the Dead parade. By the way, I never knew the skull figure, atypical of Dia de Los Muertos celebrations, was so relatively recent. You learn something new everyday...

They tried so hard to destroy the native cultures, the way we expressed ourselves, the foods we ate, our mannerisms etc . they eventually gave up because they couldn't and that's why mexican culture is a fusion of both old world and new world.

@@jr3753 Not exactly. One of the brilliant moves of the Christian church was to layer on Christian beliefs over local traditions. This was very purposeful and actually made wiping out pagan regional religions much easier. This occurred all over the western world and is why the spread of Christianity was so successful. And it is why the religion is celebrated in such diverse ways. The truth is you didn't beat the church, the church did in the Americas what it did everywhere. It is salesmanship 101, convince someone that your idea was their idea in the first place. Merry Christmas.

After all, blonde or black, rich or poor, Mexican or foreign, all people end up being skulls. That is the imprint of life in death and that is the universal imprint of Mexican culture: the party, with humor, of life because we know that we will die.

I read up on Día De (Los) Muertos, I am not an expert but from what I read, the appropriate and non-insensitive way to paint your face as a non-Mexican is to have it painted by a person of the culture. Also, I’m quite sure the woman in the video is apart of this culture. Just from the way she talked at the end of the video to her Abuelita.

Weird that you educating us on this culture but getting Hallowe'en wrong. Hallowe'en a contraction of Hallows' Even or Hallows' Evening, also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or *All Saints' Eve* . So yes 'the day of the dead' is like a Mexican version or comparison to Halloween.
@kyanite1164
@kyanite1164 4 жыл бұрын
This video did not go into the depth of Halloween because it have very little similarity and lacks the cultural roots the same way Dia de los muertos does, Halloween isn't a huge part of someone's culture. So no, It is NOT a comparison to Halloween it is a celebration of your family your ancestors it's about respect and history. Do not EVER compare it to Halloween, that is such a disrespect to the history and deep beliefs of millions of people.
@MrMisanthrope_

@@kyanite1164 again another person that doesn't know anything about the cultural origins of Halloween. Hallowe'en takes it origin from Ireland. Irish people believed that on the night, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. The costume we wear are to hide amongst them before All saint day. On which we participate in prayers and remembrance of friends and family members who have died. Maybe that is completely different.
@kyanite1164

@@MrMisanthrope_ While I do appreaciate the history that is a part of many people, I do not believe that it is celebrated as it once did. Like you said it WAS a belief that now has turned into something very different especially in the united states. What sets Dia de los muertos apart is that we aren't hidding from our dead we are bringing them into our homes celebrating them and laughing in the face of death. While they are rather fun historical origins (Halloween) it does not carry that spirit the way Dia de los muertos does. Supper passionate about my culture, sorry if I sound angry!

@@kyanite1164 it alright I'm passionate about my too. To be clear Halloween aka All hallows even is apart of All saint day and All souls day. We just prefer to wade off evil first before our family visit. It like Santa for children. However cultural traditions changes all the time. We are all human that missed our loves ones and there's no doubt similar traditions emerges but in this case were twisted and altered by Christianity.
