I was unaware that there are so many stages of decoying thought the year. I guess that helps keep I fresh all the time.

Really appreciate your videos. At what age/size do you introduce a puppy to decoying? I am getting a new rottweiler pup soon and am just getting started into coyote hunting. My 150 lb. mastiff is older and only listens to my wife lol.

Thank you sir for all the videos, and I certainly enjoyed this video explaining how & why you do what you do. I've read other folks ridicules comments on how you hunt. I'm not a hunter but I was certainly patient at watching your videos & watching what you & your dogs do. I certainly wish I could work with you as a camera man because it's really tough to do all you have to do & keep the camera on your subject as well.

Thank you sir. I greatly appreciate that. I my self have learned a lot each year I do this. My biggest thing is patients and let the dogs work and focus more on the videoing. Gets pretty exciting some days.

I was interested in maybe getting into this. I’ve watched your dog training videos and it’s very intriguing and seems very enjoyable. Is there any particular or preference of breed for the types of dogs to do this with?

It can. But your chances are very slim. Really hit and miss during winter. The summertime they are more aggressive protecting those dens and pups

What about decoying during the late winter breeding season?
@BigpawdogginDecoyingcoyotes
@BigpawdogginDecoyingcoyotes 6 жыл бұрын
Good Question. During that time frame I have a very low success rate. The coyotes are not as aggressive as they are during the Denning season. Not saying that it may not work. May find a real old aggressive male trying to set up his territory or has already acquired a female and wants to protect her. I will run my pups this winter if I get one to work that will be great if I don't atleast I can get the chase and not have a mean male whoop on my pup and get her scared to go out. With coyotes you never know.

Totally understand your perspective. It's as much about the dogs and enjoying them work as it is about killing a nuisance predator. You do a great job with them. Have you seen Joseph Carter, "the Mink Man". You are birds of a feather.

@@BigpawdogginDecoyingcoyotes The reasons I have asked is I know nothing about them, only what I can glean, most of the replies have been negative but I think they might be someone from 'PETA' who are only looking for something to complain about. I'm sure you've had a 'run-in' with one or two of them. Another reason is (I've been told) they are quite painful to the animal, personally, I don't think anyone would knowingly market that powerful. Thank's for the prompt response.

What e collars are you using? And do you think you could do a video on how you are using them? Also just curious ,are you selling the hides and eating some of the meat if so could you do like a steve rinella type catch and cook?

@BigpawdogginDecoyingcoyotes 6 жыл бұрын
I use garmin Pro 550 Yes sir I will do a video on what and how I use them. No sir the hides during the summer are not good. And during the winter where I live it doesn't really get cold enough for the hides to be worth anything. If I skin one out its for training purposes. No Sir I don't eat them. I just couldn't eat a dog unless that was the very last thing I had to eat. I have heard of some folks trying the back straps. I will have to take there word on it.

I prefer pups so i can make sure they not gun shy. Yes you can if your dog has grit and loves to chase and has obedience to return when you want. Gritty high prey driven dogs are what you are looking for as a dog

So in general coyote are just a nuisance animal and a predator that needs their numbers reduced? But in summer I'm guessing their coat is good for nothing, correct? Any other reason to take a coyote on summer season? I'm mainly interested in fur bearing.
@BigpawdogginDecoyingcoyotes
@BigpawdogginDecoyingcoyotes 6 жыл бұрын
True. Fur is not worth anything. Even in our winters furs are not worth anything. Doesnt get cold enough where i live for good fur. Yeah. Kill more multiples because can kill the whole family. Get great dog work during summer. Denning season is happening.

Howdy ! I think if you did a video history of the Gov't predator hunters who used Tolling dogs and Denning dogs for coyotes that would fill a lot of folks in on who what when where and why . From what I have heard and read over the years Gov't coyote removers would get together with their den dogs and sweep through big ranchland or public land leased to ranchers that were having trouble with high numbers of coyotes killing livestock . . They rode horseback along with the dogs . Also around this period is when howling became popular - these guys knew when the pups were old enough to howl back while the parents were out hunting - then the Gov't hunters knew where the den was . The dogs would kill the coyotes and pups - I believe this is where they learned that the tolling dog was a great benefit . The tolling dog didn't chase the coyotes into the next zip code the dogs did what you're doing today ,, lure the coyotes back to the rifle . My younger brother borrowed some old varmint/predator books I had- he moved twice - now doesn't know where they are . Books were from the 60's -70's one written by a gov't coyote Dogger , he shot a 270 100gr. bullet - said he didn't want the dogs doing anymore fighting than necessay . Explaining to people why coyotes need their numbers reduced is always a good thing - many think we just go out and kill stuff for no reason . They have no idea about the millions and millions of dollars in damage and losses to ranchers farmers - family pets . The USDA use to have a lot of good info. 12-15 years ago - not much anymore - liberals don't like seeing truth and facts . OK - I reckon this is the longest reply I ever wrote .

I read an article about "Tolling dogs" back in the early 70s, they were specially bred for some duck hunters up in British Columbia, very expensive too, about $1,500.00 for a puppy. They were taught to play with a stick by throwing it and retrieving it, ignoring the ducks in the process. The ducks would become so excited watching the dog playing with the stick, the often flew down and landed directly in front of the dog. I'm not sure if the breed is still around, but I never forgot reading that article. It was posted in one of the popular hunting magazines. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to tell what I know about them.
