Well, my opinions on the Disney Wish class of ships haven't been the most positive out there and for a while now, i've been very weary on the future for Disney Cruise Line. But now, it's gotten far stranger. Recently, Disney announced their acquisition of the unfinished Global Dream cruise ship, a byproduct of the bankruptcy of Genting Hong Kong. Today I want to figure out what the thinking was behind this surprise move and what the long term ramifications will be for the prestigious Disney Cruise Line brand.

Disney could spend a billion dollars on changes and still have a bargain of a ship. I don’t think this ship will even come to any western counties because it isn’t needed there. It would be an easy and quick way to enter the Asian market with a single ship large enough to build itineraries for

Not for cruises. The USA is by far the largest market for cruisers. Hell the cruise capital of the world is Miami. Why do you think all new cruise ships head to the caribbean first. This is definitely one of those remnants of the short-lived Chapek era of Disney. Disney wouldn't have bought this ship if it wasn't 41M compared to the 1.8B it took to construct. It will as you said not touch the U.S. markets and remain in the Asian markets for cruising I think as you said (unless they market it as a way to visit the Asian parks depending on ports and closeness to said parks that we will have to wait and see. But with Disney owning parks in Hong kong (now technically part of china after we brits gave it up) Shanghai park, plus Tokyo parks, etc then I got to admit this would be a good expansion for Disney cruises to tap into that area, etc ...yep the ship maybe not be what the USUAL Disney cruise ship specs and designs are traditionally for the U.S and European cruise markets BUT THAT'S THE POINT In the East they have a different expectation and ethos in cruising than the west does so IF it helps Disney expand into that cruise market on the parks they already have there then good on them for buying the ship... 2025 is a few yrs of yet so we will have to wait and see ..

It definitely feels like a "well we might as well buy it" type purchase. But Turning a profit on a half-price and near complete vessel is going to be easy, especially in the Asian market where demand for cruises is only increasing year on year. Plus, if it stays in that market is likely won't ever see US ports and few in the US will be aware of it, thus leaving the overall brand aesthetic untouched.

I feel like you just told the most round-about definition of "selling out." Not giving a fuck about quality control and shitting out something utterly brainless to reap profits. As much as I absolutely hate everything that the Disney Wish stands for, pretending to be impressive when it's a glorified casino with how much they want to rip people off, that ship was actually made by Disney and had some Imagineer touches.For all its gaping flaws, I can at least say "someone gave a shit and tried thier best on a horrendous budget and terrible initial idea for an attraction." Given how this belonged to an entirely different company and is being bought on the cheap solely to make money, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being the most generic cruise ship of all time. Given modern Disney, they'll just finish what isn't already completed and maybe slap on some IP branding before sending it to China. If they do add anything, it'll almost certainly be cloned; probably from the Wish.

They purchased this ship at an unbelievable bargain. Although it may be a little different from their usual design aesthetic, this ship is a virtual blank canvas that they can do with whatever they can dream up. I thought it was a great buy, and when they said they'd drop the guest capacity to a more manageable complement, I became more intrigued. Afterall, Disney has demonstrated a surprising willingness to stray from tradition much in recent years. Not necessarily a good thing, but we'll just have to wait and see.

THANK YOU JAKE! No one talks about how Disney cruise line is not just about a “Mickey Mouse Boat.” As someone who loves dcl for its aesthetics just as much as the experience, this ship was a kick in the balls for the branding. As much as I still love the older ships, it’s hard to feel confident in management when they make decisions like this without considering the brand as a whole and just see dollar signs.

The thing is, though - you will never travel on this boat. It is for people in China, not you. And they have none of the strong associations you have with a certain aesthetic for the ship (in fact they have zero awareness that Disney Cruises even exists in 99.99999% of cases).
@generaltophat5877

@@Zveebo Exact same argument could be said for why Disney still structures their Asian theme parks off of Disneyland. Why not just open up a six flags style attraction under the Disney name since “they have none of the strong associations” anyway. (Ie why do they still have a castle or Main Street with designated lands instead of slapping down a bunch of thrill rides). Disney created a replicable brand identity that is synonymous with the quality service they provide. Seeing them cheapen the experience by taking the easy way out from a design viewpoint, isn’t a good look for the company no matter what market they are serving.

Honestly, I’m not that convinced that the brand impact will be all that significant, even if it ends up not being great compared with the current ships. The Chinese market is not familiar with the Disney Cruise brand, and that’s the only market that this ship is going to serve, so I think any brand impact will effectively be quarantined - and to be fair, this ship may serve the Chinese market well in a way that existing ships would not: that market has none of the associations with the golden age of cruise ships that Disney plays off of elsewhere.

The whole reason the Global Dream was so cheesy and overpacked is because it was for the Chinese market where they have little familiarity with cruising and are used to more heavily populated spaces. I should preface this by saying I don't think many ships can be considered beautiful as they are too intricate and large to have any smoothed out, pretty features like a car can, but I don't think the Global Dream is ugly. It's more simplistic, but I fail to see what is so inherently ugly about it. In fact, I think the bow of some of Disney's existing ships is too long and make it look like a giant underbite. Aesthetics aside, buying an existing large ship to serve a market that consists of over 2 billion people (Asia) is actually a smart move in my eyes. I agree that the ship doesn't fit into Disney's existing fleet, but given that they don't have any ships that sail in Asia, it's not disrupting any exiting fleet in the Pacific, rather this ship is the start of that fleet. Time will tell how much retrofitting Disney has to do to make the layout work, but I am optimistic so far. Disney turned a swampy wetland into Disney World, so I think they can manage one cruise ship.

it depends on what you find beautiful. Many ship nerds, including myself and I assume Jake, find ocean liners peak ship design. For me in particular, I love the art deco era of ships such as the Normandie and Queen Elizabeth 2, and disney has stuck with a quasi-art deco style on their ships, whereas the Global Dream is a complete kick in the face to this. Obviously, Disney has opted out of this thus far, but I have to wonder if this would have been the first Disney ship to include an actual casino since it would have catered to east Asia. I know it's not quite the same, but since Chapek was so interested in sports betting, I wouldn't have been surprised to see this ship test the waters (no pun intended) on the first Disney casino. Actually this makes a few odd things fall into place. Recently at D23 in Sep 2022, Disney Announced their first sailings in Australia as “Australia and South Paciific cruises”. I’m a DVC member and we heard about this while on an Alaska trip. I personally prefer to use my DVC points on the cruise line. The dates and itineraries were not yet available tho. When they did come out, the only ship doing the sailings was the Wonder (my favorite along with her sister the Magic). The initial sailing was from Vancouver to Hawaii then Hawaii thru the South Pacific to Sydney. As exciting as the 15 night sailing from Hawaii to Sydney looked, we were disappointed because we were really interested in Australia cruises. Imagine our surprise when the Australia itineraries came out and they were just out to sea cruises. Short 3 or 4 day cruises with maybe a one day stop at some island but mostly at sea days. Clearly aimed at Aussies. It became very obvious that this was just a way for Disney to see if they could break into the Southeast Asian market for cruising. The South Pacific cruises were just repositioning cruises that paid the expenses of getting the ship and crew to Australia and back. Disney isnt going to commit any of their current ships to this market and it is too far away to really be profitable to sail a ship there and back during the fall/winter season this is happening. Noe we couldn’t get the Hawaii to Sydney sailing and I’m not flying halfway across the world to sail out of Sydney Harbour for 2 days then back in for another 2 days so we decided to do another trip, which is when I learned something else that is interesting. We decided on a British Isles Cruise but it was hard to find because for some odd reason there werent as many itineraries available for 2023. Imagine my surprise when I went to book and found out that the ship was the Dream. Disney never uses the large ships for these type of sailings because they just cant fill them up. Usually they use the smaller ships with multiple dates and the Dream and Fantasy stick to the Caribbean. But the Wonder will be out of position if it is on its way to Australia so it cant do multiple Northern European Itineraries. The Dream can roll up several smaller sailings of the Wonder into one sailing tho (Let’s hope the ports of call and tour providers can handle it tho). So now I hear that Disney is in the market for a large cruise ship almost completely built with an Asian design. Seems Disney may mean to expand permanently into the East for cruising including Australia, New Zealand with probably Hong Kong, China and possibly other Asian ports using a dedicated large cruise ship. I would assume a dedicated crew as well. It would be cheaper for them to have crew hiews mostly locally. They could avoid monsoon season by cruise out of the area at that time. Much more cost effective than sailing a ship that is already used most of the year and having to sail it half way across the world to give 4 or 5 night cruises to Aussies.

I'm interested to know where you heard this. Was it insider information? Either way, if Disney Atlas does end up being the name, then solid choice. It only makes sense, given the ship's massive size especially in comparison to the rest of the fleet. If it gets picked over Surprise (which is what I have in mind), I won't be complaining. Also, yeah, the six funnels. Looks awful: the first time I looked at this I also thought it was three. Six wouldn't have been as bad if they were lined up end to end. 😅Then again, to pull that off, they'd probably need to shrink them down a whole lot. Still quite the achievement though.

I believe that DCL will iterate on the design a few times and the create a budget friendly subsidiary cruise line with this ship. Being smaller than Oasis, let alone the recently revealed Icon, class but having more people doesn't lead to a luxury experience. Changing the cabins will be very expensive, which will reduce the financial benefits of this ship. That means tons of 2 person cabins. That's not conducive for the Disney market. For those reasons, I believe they'll eventually give up on calling it a DCL ship and create a budget subsidiary.

From the pics it looks like the outside is done but it's pretty much empty on the inside. It's not going to be hard gutting the interior and basically starting from scratch. Of engineers are able to completely gut buildings and give them a totally new floor plan I imagine they can do the same to a ship.
@soulcstudios

Where are you finding pictures of the ships insides? I'm skeptical. The rooms in cruise ships are prefabricated, modified cargo containers. They are slid into the ship during construction. You can see the holes where the rooms are placed in one of the pictures in the video, and toward the back of the ship many of those rooms are already completed. I would also expect all the inside cabins to have been placed, especially where the completed outside cabins are already visible. Since the rooms basically cargo shipping containers, you can't just go cutting holes into their sides or removing walls to connect them to make bigger rooms and reduce capacity. It ruins their structural integrity.

The pride of America is kind of of a small, older, cozy ship. But look at the itinerary and the views it provides. When I went on it we passed the lava flow on the big island and the wind was blowing the steam inland so we were able to get closer than usual which provided an amazing view of the lava pouring in to the ocean all from the comfort of my balcony while enjoying a drink and joint. Then when we sailed up the na pali coast we could see whales breaching. I think they have to use a smaller ship because it's hard to get people to fly all the way to Hawaii to get on a cruise. When I took it, I lived in hawaii 10 minutes from where it left honolulu.

@JoshDoesTravel

I mean given Chapek puts short term gains ahead of long term success, this doesn’t surprise me. He saw a cheap and easy way to enter the Asian market, and did what every normal CEO would do and take the opportunity. The problem is Disney is not a normal company, and thus cannot have a normal CEO, which I think Chapek didn’t realize till it was too late

I also heard this Chapek brought the ship to show the company was buying assets and to show growth but clearly that did not work out for him! The biggest difference between Chapek and Iger is that Iger has better PR. Many decisions (although not this one) had been made by Iger but Chapek was blamed for it and the nickel and diming already started under Iger who's biggest achievements were buying up other brands and fit them into Disney. People have all forgotten Iger's Expedition Everest quote for example (something along the lines of "People don't come to the park for a rollercoaster that is themed to India or whatever, they come to the parks to see Arendelle and meet Anna and Elsa")

Agree with you on the original design of the first few Disney ships, quite unique. As an insider involved in the original project its not only the amazing discount on the purchase price, Disney also skip the multi year waiting list for a new build. Regarding the 75% I've seen the 3d CAD models and I believe its more like 80% so any changes to the layout would be expensive and time consuming at this stage but there is loads of scope to change branding, materials and colours of the fittings. Another interesting detail, the 9000 pax capacity is only possible as each cabin was conceived with the Chines market in mind, i.e. Parents, child and Grandparent/nanny. So each cabin has a potential occupancy of 5.

I definitely see your points here, all very valid concerns, I will say in my mind though that the Wish was already the departure. The previous four had style of their own, beautiful design, but also had (at the time) standard cruise ship deck layouts. The Wish attempted to even reinvent those and came up short or worse, annoying. Looking at you, missing center bank of elevators. (And not much seems to be different with Treasure so far.) It seems the biggest issue going forward is the strictly ship design parts, so maybe adopting a more contemporary design might resolve those issues at least. Plus, I was disappointed the size of the Wish was not much bigger than Dream class. In a world of RCL mega-ships, Disney having one in the game is exciting to say the least. It’s an outlier as you say but purposefully so to stand out as “the big one.” Hopefully the style can meet or overcome the size though. It’s maybe weirdly fortunate that a mostly complete mega ship found its way into their hands, that doesn’t happen everyday, but that is something that time will tell. Who knows, it’s just sad we’ll never see one of the fleet pull up to Castaway Cay. (And if there’s a casino onboard, I will spew.)

This reminds me how the Hamburg America Line's Imperator-class liners ended up after WW1 in the service of Cunard (Berengaria), White Star (Majestic) and US Lines (Leviathan) -- I think it could work well for Disney and that reworking an existing design while not ideal compared to a clean-sheet design could end up a more interesting design.

Having cruised DCL 8 times now, I'd have no desire for this ship or the Wish, frankly. We prefer the two original smaller ships still, even with their aging related issues. Bigger ships are not necessarily better. We cruised on one of the RCL mega ships because we were curious and really didn't care for it or the number of people on board. There's more stuff to do but you're usually waiting in lines for it.

If the Disney Cruise Line was banking in explosive Asian (and specifically Chinese) tourism then they are in for yet another problem. Based on bulls times of cruise ships being anywhere from 1.5 to 2 years for ships with similar tonnage to the Wish, it seems that Disney is virtually building a new ship. I would guess that the Global Dream is 6 months too a year from delivery. However, Disney is launching this ship in 2025, that combined with the fact that they’re cutting the capacity down to 6k makes it seem like they’re not just buying a product, putting mouse ears on it and calling it Disney. I believe that great thought will be our into this project. Plus, the Asian market cares equally, if not more about immersion than North America, so hopefully that ensure that this ship won’t be half baked and watered down.

I don’t think that the people in that area will be too concerned about the look of the ship, as 1. The ship was designed for an Asian cruise line anyways and 2. It will give this ship a distinct identity as being the “Asian exclusive” ship. To me, it’s a solid idea.
