Distal Clavicle Osteolysis (DCO) is a painful development of bony erosions and resorption of the distal clavicle. This is caused by repetitive trauma to the AC joint. It is an overuse injury that is mainly seen in weightlifters.
Dr. McGarry breaks down a recent case of DCO in a 29 year old power lifter. Check out the video above and if you have any comments or questions let us know in the comments below.

Had this surgery done and wish I hadn’t. My shoulder is in pain. It’s been over a year since this surgery. Finally found a surgeon that sent me for a ct arthrogram. They are thinking something going on with bicep or slap tear. The surgeon that did the distal clavicle excision didn’t look into the rest of the surgery. Hopefully will get results from ct arthrogram soon

Do you have a follow up on this specific patient? Now that it’s about 6mo since surgery?

I had shoulder pain last February but I worked a labor job and couldn't afford to stop working so I powered through the pain until August I went to a sports physio clinic and after x-rays and an mri it was clear that I had DCO. I did physio and rest and then a lot of at home posture/mobility work and it helped but anything overhead is still uncomfortable & would cause pain the next day. I did a follow up on the x-ray last month and it hasn't degraded anymore and when I asked about a injection the doctor said it would only help temporary. I think my next step will be surgery.

Is it common practice to remove the bursa with this surgery

Was just diagnosed, sustained around 18 months ago. Does the bone remineralize in mild cases with conservative treatment and a high calcium diet? Or is the lost permanent, whatever extent it’s gotten to

Why do KZbinrs talk the seriousness of it down when you look at medical texts and studies and they explain how serious it is?

What do you mean with seriousness? Just the end of the collarbone is removed, sling for only 1 day after surgery, I was back in the gym 3 days later, training back, legs and the other side of the chest/shoulder while doing the rehab exercises on the side I had the surgery. Range of motion was back during the first week and I was allowed to do all exercises based on my pain level. I was completely back to training after some weeks. I had the surgery in May 2021 and I already surpassed all of my strenght levels. During the entire time, I had no muscle loss on the operated side. It is an really easy procedure, took my surgeron maybe ~20 minutes. I will do the other side next month and I am really looking forward to it. Medical texts and studies also describes the surgery as easy going with zero complications. No muscles or bands are being cut during the surgery, so there is nothing that needs to heal or grow back together.
