What Is Distributed Power?

This video talks about distributed power on American railroads. We even dive into older DPU operations on the Southern Railway on Saluda Grade using Ed Painter's classic videos of the DP Boxcars being used on the Saluda Mountain. These videos have been taken all around the east coast of DPU operations.
In rail transport, distributed power (DP) is a generic term referring to the physical distribution at intermediate points throughout the length of a train in separate motive power groups. Such "groups" may be single units or multiple consists, and are remotely controlled from the leading locomotive. The practice allows locomotives to be placed anywhere within the length of a train when standard multiple-unit operation is impossible or impractical. DP can be achieved by wireless or wired means. Wired systems now provided by various suppliers use the cabling already extant throughout a train equipped with electronically controlled pneumatic brakes.

Well done concise and accurate and easy to understand. DPU here in the midwest can be a hit and a miss. The most interesting is when UP puts 2 coal trains together and somewhere along the line splits them into two trains

Good video on DPUS, I like seeing the mid helper DPUS configured one or two usually on NS trains were I film in different locations, Christiansburg, Radford Roanoke, Montgomery Tunnel, Wytheville, Rural Retreat VA, etc,filmed a 200 + coal train last November at Montgomery Tunnel with two unique on the head end three mid helper DPUS and two end train DPUS!🛤🚂
