Docker is an open platform for developing, shipping, and running applications. Docker enables you to separate your applications from your infrastructure so you can deliver software quickly.
Simply put, a container is a sandboxed process on your machine that is isolated from all other processes on the host machine. A container is an isolated environment for your code. This means that a container has no knowledge of your operating system, or your files. It runs on the environment provided to you by Docker Desktop.
A Dockerfile is simply a text-based file with no file extension that contains a script of instructions. Docker uses this script to build a container image. A Dockerfile is a text document in which you define the build steps for your application. You write the Dockerfile in a domain-specific language, called the Dockerfile syntax.
Containerization provides an opportunity to move and scale applications to clouds and data centers. Containers effectively guarantee that those applications run the same way anywhere, allowing us to quickly and easily take advantage of all these environments.
