Very informative. There's something wrong with the end of the animation though. You may want to fix it.

This video makes EDI look awesome but in reality it's terrible. First exchanging EDI files is usually done through some ancient systems or protocols (sending them as email, uploading through FTP, copy pasting into different systems etc.). EDI as standard is complicated, highly specific and badly written, often written to solve specific problems and then retrofitted for general use, this leads to companies not understanding and customizing the format for their own purposes, which breaks the standard. All of this makes it a nightmare to automate processing of EDI documents.

1:19 What are those number written along with invoice, purchase order, po acknowledgement., Etc?

Those are called document types. When you send an 856 for example, you are sending an ASN, AKA BOL or packing slip, to your customer.

Why is using EDI tools better than building a proper RESTFUL API based on ISO-9735 standard?
@MrVerdes223 жыл бұрын
I believe many web solutions use both

Not necessarily better, but there are many systems already installed and need to be supported

@@ChickensAndGardening I agree, that many systems are using it - it's because of the legacy, not because it was a good way of doing things. There are ISO standards (international ones, like ISO-9735) that state how financial information should be exchanged. Using EDI to exchange data instead of RESTFUL API-s, is just architecturally a bad choice. Am I saying it doesn't have the place in the history - no, not at all. It was the best way to do it in 1980s, but in 2024, I would never recommend anyone to start implementing EDI as a data exchange platform =)

Dumb comment here, but isn't this technology super outdated. If it was the 1970's maybe, but people using this today is ridiculous.
