When Elijah first meets Katherine he gasps and says “you remind me of someone”. Then in s3, Klaus & Elijah tell Stefan and Damon about Tatia the first doppelgänger. It also explains why Klaus needed to sacrifice a doppelganger to break his werewolf curse - Tatia’s blood was used to bind it. And Klaus and Elijah knowing Tatia explains why they knew Katherine and Elena were doppelgängers just from looking at them.

alright i’m gonna clarify some thing: -kol knows stuff about magic bc he’s been alive FOR A THOUSAND YEARS im sure he’s bound to have crossed a witch or twos path and HIS MOTHER IS A WITCH HELLOO - esther spelled the chains holding elijah and she an extremely powerful witch so no elijah couldn’t break them -esther was telling the truth about what elijah did -klaus can’t be harmed by daggers -also tatia was absolutely mentioned in tvd by klaus and elijah when they were talking to stefan and damon in a dinner party scene in like season 3 or 4 when they were comparing their love triangle with tatia to stefan and damon’s love triangle with elena

They talked about Tatia before in the vampire diaries season 3 episode 13. During the dinner scene with Klaus, Elijah, Damon and Stefan. This is the first time we are seeing her in a flashback. Nice to see Nina on the originals too! I love this episode because you get to learn more about Elijah and why he is the way he is. Also can we talk about the fact Klaus and Cami saved each other, they're so cute and their chemistry is amazing. Not to forget Cami standing up to Mikael is so bad ass, that's how you know she really cares for Klaus because I don't think any woman aside from Rebekah and Hayley has stood up for Klaus the way Cami does.

Kol and Finn have an affinity for magic, not just because their mother is a powerful witch and they have centuries of knowledge, but remember that before they were vampires they were all born human (except Klaus), that is, they were all born witches, the difference is that some will develop an aptitude and others won't, basically all the rest haven't developed. Kol, for me, is the most skilled of the brothers in this sense, he's very intelligent. About the dark objects, well you'll find out a bit more. As for Tatia, she was mentioned in TVD at the Mikaelson and Salvatore brothers' dinner (3x13) and they told us that she was the first doppelgänger and her blood was used to turn them into vampires and to seal Klaus' curse, as well as when they showed us Klaus' flashback the first time (2x19), we see Elijah meet Katherine and be surprised, then he tells her “you remind me of someone”. Ah, and Esther didn't lie about Elijah at all. Note: Tatia was the only one of the doppelgängers and the select list of women Klaus fell in love with.

Way back in late S2 ("Klaus") they established there had been a doppelganger Klaus and Elijah were familiar with before Katherine. As others have mentioned, it was at the dinner when Elijah first came back in S3 that the brothers revealed they had been in love with the "Original" Doppelganger, a widow with a young son, and fought over her (and to a minor extent Katherine, though not for romantic reasons on Klaus' behalf) like the Salvatores would later fight over Katherine and Elena. Rebekah also says to either Katherine or Elena (either S4 or S3 depending on which) that the Original Doppelganger was "much prettier." For Silas and Amara to be granted immortality, they had to create shadow selves. For Esther to grant her children immortality, she used the blood of something already permanent (a doppelganger bloodline), who was conveniently there with a Bennett witch, Ayana, who probably had some indication of Qetsiyah's original spell. The lore question this has always left me wondering about: Elijah and Klaus operated under the assumption that every drop of the Doppelganger's blood had been used to bind his Hybrid side after his first transformation revealed Esther's cheating, and thus that every drop of Elena's blood needed to be used to break the "Sun and Moon" Curse. Was this actually the case, since Esther did use the then-dead Tatia's blood to bind it and S3 indicated she set a trap with the need to kill the doppelganger but have another ready for Klaus' hybrid making (which he certainly wasn't thinking of already at the time Esther cast the curse), or would a smidge of Elena's blood have worked? **EDIT** one more bit: Esther alluded to Elijah being more of a monster than acknowledged when she had her children linked together in late S3 and almost killed them using the Bennett bloodline- I think the episode after "All My Children"?? When Kol said "scarper", it's like "scamper" or "scram"- run quickly away from the bigger fish basically, to flee. Obviously Mikael is not a good guy and did decide to drink from Cami later on, but his aggression toward human her was different than the werewolves (who he has hated as a species for a thousand years, being jealous of their strength, angry over Esther's infidelity, and vengeful over Henrik's death) or Davina, the witch who bound him to her side. It took Cami showing a clear preference for Klaus and overwhelming need on his own behalf to drink from her. But of note, it was definitely Klaus who killed Esther and framed Mikael for it (that information is why Rebekah turned on Klaus in early S3 of TVD). As to Kol (and Finn) knowing about magic, they lived around powerful witches, including their mother, growing up, and while Finn only had an extra ~20 years max living, Kol had a couple hundred, and found the time as mentioned in last episode to do some travelling (Africa; don't worry, no Travelers involved). You also might recall that back in S4 of TVD he was the only Original sibling to have heard of Silas from the witching community before the hunt for the Cure... There's also a web-series "The Awakening" that was a tie-in to this season focused on Kol's backstory with some New Orleans witches. I think it wasn't released until later in the season- I've never seen it (idk where to, actually), but it might be an interesting watch.

Back in season 1 Klaus and Elijah had an argument in the cemetery and Klaus says something about Elijah’s “mask of civility” and accuses him of being “every bit the monster I am, or worse”. This episode really starts to lay the breadcrumbs of evidence behind that statement with the introduction of the Red Door. 24:30 I love this part of the episode when they all come together against Mikael! Like just watching Marcel get in some hits was cool (thought you’re right that Mikael could’ve killed him pretty easily), and then Klaus taking a breath just as Hayley walks in. Felt very “Avengers assemble” of them. But no, I love Hayley but realistically she’s is not stronger than Mikael, she’s way weaker. I wish we could’ve seen that all actually fight Mikael. Would’ve been super interesting! This episode’s twist ending really got me. Also, even though it was a dream, it showed Hayley ripping the doll before breaking the chains implying that the magic was what kept Elijah from breaking free.

More clarification will occur about Kol knowing “witch” things… but remember…they were born witches, raised by a witch, and around for 1000 years … so yeah he knows things lol not just “been a witch for a week” Also remember Kol and Finn being over 1000 years old, and having little screen time on TVD, that’s over 1000 years of potential storylines and situations that you as the viewer of the show have not seen before… so to say things like “Kols vocabulary is different bc he’s in a new body”… not true, you just don’t know much about him yet 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whenever a pair of doppelgangers died, nature would produce another pair every century or two years. By the time Esther appeared, knowledge of doppelgangers had existed for centuries, largely because the Travelers had been searching for them across the globe for 500 years. During this time, witches actively fought the Travelers and worked to hide the doppelgangers and their descendants. Amara → Tatia → Katherine → Elena are the only Petrova doppelgangers we know of, but the show strongly implies (and the showrunners confirmed) that others existed. After the dinner Elijah pretty much undaggered all of his siblings, hope this refreshes your memory. Eliajh mentioned that their mother murdered her and used her blood to turn them into vampires. As we know now, it was only partly true. Esther did use Tatia's blood to create the vampire species, but never actually killed her. They never mentioned in the TVD that she was also a doppelganger, so maybe that's why you guys don't remember.

Like @westfinest20 said, Klaus turned after triggering his curse by killing as a vampire, thereby revealing his different paternity, and that was when Esther cast a second spell on him (third if we count the starling necklace). Why she thought that would appease Mikael is beyond me, though, unless she hoped he wouldn't find out (i.e. if he was out of his mind at the time with werewolf bites after going after most of the village's wolves). She didn't think to cast the curse as a precaution beforehand because they didn't anticipate their childrens' thirst would be so overwhelming and monstrous as to prompt them to kill. But while Klaus didn't enjoy the pain of transformation, he always yearned for that chance for power (and maybe belonging with a pack) back.
