Email spoofing can have serious consequences, but can be avoided. Recognizing signs of email spoofing and employing proper cybersecurity practices will help keep attacks at bay. Watch to find out what email spoofing means and how to stay safe from email crime.
Email spoofing is the forgery of an email header so that the message appears to have originated from somewhere other than the actual source. Spoofed emails are intended to trick a recipient into opening the message and providing sensitive information or unknowingly installing malware. Spoofed emails are often characterized with impersonal greetings, misspelled or suspicious URLs, or fear-inducing messages. A successful email spoof -- wherein the recipient is successfully tricked -- can wreak havoc on a system or a user’s personal affairs.
