What is ENIG? | PCB Knowledge

ENIG is the abbreviation of Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold, one of the commonly used surface finish for printed circuit boards. It goes through a chemical process where a layer of Nickel will be applied on the copper,followed by a layer of Gold, which can effectively prevent the copper from oxidation and corrosion.

I don't care for the final gold plating process, but would it be possible to order a CNC steel part with the final surface plating as electroless nickel plating? 🤔 The hardness and wear resistance is comparatively superior to electrolytic nickel plating. I've asked the customer service team on the website before, but they seem unaware if its an offered service.

@@PCBWay electrolytic nickel plating is inferior to chemical nickel plating in terms of hardness and wear resistance though. That's why I'm asking specifically for the electrolytic chemical process instead 🙏🏻

Also on ultra low noise circuits it can lead to more noise. When there is a junction of different metals, that are at different temperatures it generates more noise in the nV region. Due to the extra metal layers there are more junctions and therefore more noise, than in for example OSP, which with solder might only has 1 rather than the ENIGs 3 junctions. I mean for most people it doesnt effect their circuits, but if you come into the ultra low noise or metrology grade equipment range, something like this might ruin your day.
