The field of computational linguistics you described seems like it could be an excellent avenue for my own academic path. I'm really interested in the semiotic differences and similarities between how spoken languages and programming languages operate. I feel as if a more generalized, less mechanically oriented, study of programming languages could bring us to an understanding of what "magical" languages throughout history have been designed to accomplish within the hardware of the human brain.

"I feel as if a more generalized, less mechanically oriented, study of programming languages could bring us to an understanding of what "magical" languages throughout history have been designed to accomplish" That already exists - albeit in a crude way - in the *'liberal art'* of mathematics (with it's nowadays various subfields). Take a look at e.g. 'projective geometry' and how it relates to modern astronomy. That would be an *_imaginative_* example, reflected in the traditions of 'astrology'. 'Glossolalia' could be a phenomena of _'auditory' inspiration_ , rare in our times for those of 'sound' mind, but apparently more common in the Bronze Age, considering the references to hearing voices in Hebrew scripture and Hellenic stories. Sometimes, one wakes up from vivid dream and bears words on the tongue, seemingly never heard before. Semiotic computation can calculate the probability of 'loreipsum' being a _message_ or _cipher_ or a random sequence of letters - it can't interprete the words or symbols into meaning - as proven with texts like the Voynich manuscript. I could make a comparison to _rhetorics_ as the 'programming language' of man, but that is not what You are looking for.

@@andythedishwasher1117 "I will have to do a little more research into the points you raised in order to tell if I agree with you (...)" That sounds like a good plan. Mind You, I don't pretend to know what Dee's collection is about. We know that he was engaged in espionage and encryption/deception and Kelly is said to be a fraud - but I also _believe_ in the biblical notice of prophecy: "Even on My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.…" (Acts 2:16-18) I don't mean that in a 'bible-thumping' way, but I did find the fact of the veneration of *Uriel* within the Ethiopian Church of interest - as the office of this angel is arguably repressed by Rome for better or worse: ('A look into Uriel, a 'forgotten' archangel') kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnyqlqSorc6Ea7M So it is possible e.g. that what was considered canon for centuries can be further explored and interpreted with apocryphic material or personal revelations, e.g. granted or 'accessible' only 'piecemeal' in a long period of time, because it requires a distinct stage of maturity, respectively.

Yes, these two were an awful though incredibly interesting influence on each other, it seemed almost inevitable that things would degenerate into an alchemical fear and loathing in central Europe. It's amazing that what is usually a fairly serious subject has such an element of farce with this gruesome twosome, I don't think you missed a single instance of this, very well done. Most people in Dee's position would have perhaps said the banishment spell very slowly when Kelley was being beaten by shovels, luckily for Kelley Dee was a good bro, too good infact.

The experience of Kelly that you describe is NOT creepy. I had a similar experience. It was, at once, both literally awe-some and deeply uncomfortable. There was a massive headache in a certain place in my head, and an internal light that was as if staring at a thousand suns collected in one place. Then I was brought within and saw a Divine Form. It is not my place to interfere with anyone's path, so I will end the direct encounter there. Two notes - I was not the only one in the room at the time. My wife also had the same headache in the same place in the head. She also saw the light I mentioned. She was not permitted within, as I was. For us both, it was a profound experience, difficult to fully describe. Neither of us suffered any ill effects afterward. Even still, it took about 6 hours for the discomfort to leave fully. The point in telling this experience is to say that the effects were preceeded by a kind of rewiring of the circuitry, so nothing would be burnt out. It was a kindness.

The works givin to them from the angels is a treasure...and being 'buried' means that it is hidden or secret. So the angels were giving them what they thought Dee and Kelly were looking for, but it's not quite what the two wanted. Unless of course, Dee and Kelly both had different ideas of what 'treasure' really was
@kheph7773 жыл бұрын
Nope - they were after an actual buried treasure. A specific one, for which they had what they hoped was a map. They wanted the angels to decipher the map for them, or lead them directly to the treasure. But the angels were indeed talking about the Treasure of the Hidden Wisdom they were revealing. They just let Dee and Kelley think what they wanted to think. Angels tend to do that... LOL

Wow, this strikes so many notes of the Mormon story and Joseph smith . Joseph had a somewhat murky past with finding buried treasure, glossolalia was very popular before the nauvoo period, you get a new book that has ancient roots(reminds me of the mystique of the hermetica), a new alphabet in very short use , and alot more. It's really fascinating the magical past of protestantism and it's ideological compatriots. I've often seen mormonism as the apotheosis of mystical non-denominationalism. Their closest relatives being the baptists, or rational non-denominationalism. I hope Dr. Sledge does some videos on the Restoration period in America , or on the oahspe, or the urantia book 🤔

Dr. Sledge, I enjoy your presentations, especially your academic approach to the esoteric. I am familiar with the readings of the American Book of the Dead by EJ Gold, a translations and interpretation of Tibetan Book of the Dead. Two things struck me during your discussion on the Angelical symbols. During the voyage of the essence after death there is an immediate confrontation with the Clear Light and greatest potential for transfiguration. After this initial bounce the essence begins to lose momentum and descends through 49 chambers, noted by colors, symbols and angelic association in order to learn the lessons of the Tree of Life. Seven times we pass through seven chambers each time experiencing more hallucinations and distractions drawing us into another karmic rebirth. However anytime during this voyage through Bardo we can see the face of the beloved and transcend. The angelic beings first appearing as friendly guides, followed by non-responsive guides and eventually the torment of our own hallucinations. The 7x7 or 49 chambers seems to resonate with the magickal squares and the descending passages you have described in your work on the Angelical symbols. Blessings Aurea luc

I remember buying and getting stuck into my first copy of Aleister Crowley's "Liber 418: The Vision and the Voice" and I happened to be reading another little book that went into some detail about Crowley's relationship with the "disciple" who joined him on that journey into the desert, an apparently sorely mistreated Victor Neuburg, at the same time. I was at the time familiar only with the so-called Enochian Keys as a result of having read Anton LaVey's "Satanic Bible" which has the keys printed in a somewhat abridged form towards its end. I found the history of the language and its "reception" by Dee and Kelley compelling and like you, I was only about 14 at the time myself, so to be honest, a lot of the techniques and terminology that was employed in the writing of the book were as new to me as the language. If I'm being honest, the method of scrying employed by Dee and Kelley is still quite foggy to me from the implements they made use of to all the inversions of the text in their revelations and the way in which they were written down. You can imagine then, I'm sure, that if I'm still foggy on those things now, I swore my way through "The Vision and the Voice" from start to finish and on that first reading, really took nothing in beyond the exciting bit detailing Al's seemingly deliberate embodiment of the spirit of Daath's ruling demon, Choronzon, and what I discovered in the little book I was subsequently reading to have been some kind of abusive sexually-charged behavior aimed at the skinny little Neuburg who's job in the ritual was basically to assist and document and ended up involving so much more than that - all apparently rather ugly stuff that doesn't reflect on the character of the late Crowley very well at all. Man, did I put a lot of time into trying to learn to recite those keys by heart. Years later, I had managed to commit some to memory along with a modicum of awareness of what I was saying in translation. It was all part of a study of ceremonial magick that I really took quite seriously until my early thirties. Today, I don't think I could recite even a single sentence from any one of the keys. Man alive, those were some weird times. I don't regret them, not for the most part, although I did fall victim to something of an obsession with the material that I don't think benefited me or anyone else at all. But now that I'm listening to you talk about the history of the Enochian or Angelic language, I find my interest somewhat piqued by it again, although with a great deal more interest in the history and conception of the work. I love your channel so much, Dr. Sledge. It's kinda homey for me in a way, and you deliver the information with such clarity along with that wonderful modicum of subtle humor that just makes it all the better. Thank you so very much.

The Angel of the West Window: Gustav Meyrink. First published in 1927, this novel centres on the life of the Elizabethan magus John Dee. Past and present, dreams and visions, myth and reality interweave as we accompany Dee on his search for the truth. Though he has much knowledge, he lacks one crucial insight . Because of this lack we watch him become entangled ever more deeply in a web of delusion and disaster. He imagines his fervent prayers are answered by an angel of God, whereas in reality the response comes from an angel of darkness, a projection of everything that lives within him. Through this Angel of the West Window he is eventually ruined, so that he finally blames God for what he himself has created . To see how, after a long path of experience, Dee eventually finds his way out of this web to reach his ultimate goal, making this book a good read.

Sadly, that turned out to be an urban legend. Dee WAS absolutely England's first and most influential spy. But he never used the "007" code. :(

I hope you might expand your Dee work to include his greatest masterpiece, the New World. There is a celestial "windmill" observation megalithic site in New England that he designed. We are in America because of Dee's work with the crown.

On a less serious note (or maybe way more serious), a couple of those symbols look like amazing tattoo ideas. Namely the Seal of God and the star shown around the 25:35 mark of the video. What are the odds that getting the Seal of God tattooed on one's self would cause unfortunate side effects? I mean for me in this case, the end of the world will happen either way, so I don't consider that a particularly unfortunate side effect. However, being beaten by angels would be unfortunate, by my estimation.
@kheph7773 жыл бұрын
Never have an entity's sigil tattooed on you! That's the spirit's signature, and by marking yourself with it you are declaring yourself that spirit's property. :( As for the Seal of the True God - to do that right you have to have the whole thing inscribed on your forehead! (Yep - it's that Seal of God, from Revelation.)
@loveless1313 жыл бұрын
@@kheph777 After some quick googling (had no idea it was that one) I am more down with the seal of God tattoo idea, but I am not big on face tattoos. Honestly seems like too small of an area to put it with any accuracy. I'm cool with the idea that God could claim ownership of me anyway, since he could do so either way, what with being all powerful and all. Heck, if it shaves some time off purgatory for me, I'm all about it. (My views on purgatory deviate from Catholicism, but it's too complicated to detail and largely irrelevant here)
@kheph7773 жыл бұрын
@@loveless131 - Yeah, a good portion of what you see in the Enochian system is essentially based on the Revelation of St. John. Or, more specifically, it is based on the Vision of the Throne of God - which is itself based on the older Jewish Merkavah tradition, which focused on similar Visions in Ezekiel and the Book of Enoch.

Awesome episode, Dr. Sledge! :) :) :) There's a ton to comment on in here for sure - but for now I note that you pronounce "Gebofal" as "geh-BOW-fall" (with a hard "g"). I have tended toward "JEH-bow-fal" (with the "a" as in "apple"). But, I admit, that has always been a complete shot in the dark on my part, as Dee left us no pronunciation notes on this word. Meanwhile, your pronunciation strikes me as more "in tune" with what the Language actually sounds like. Is there a reason you settled on that pronunciation? I'm already finding myself pronouncing it more like you do! LOL
@TheEsotericaChannel3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, friend and many thanks for all your helpful insight during the making of this episode! My pronunciation? Also a shot in the dark. I basically default to something like academic Latin pronunciation when I otherwise have no idea (like here), /g/ rather than /dʒ/, /ˈoʊ/ because I take the final vowel to be /a/ - thus lengthening the penultimate vowel and laying stress there respectively. That's a general linguistic tendency, but given this language, who the hell knows? It would be interesting to get an expert in early modern English for their input, especially given that both Dee and Kelly would have had noticeably different accents, Angelic speech aside.
@yochanan7703 жыл бұрын
Given that the Angelic language has components of Latin, English, and Greek, I've always tended toward hard G as well. Soft G is pretty new as far as English is concerned. - it's "gif" not a "jif".
@kheph7773 жыл бұрын
@@yochanan770 - My general stance is that "ge" should make a soft g sound - as in "gentle" and "gentry." (As does "gi" - like "giant" - while "ga" tends to have the hard sound - as in "gas" or "gantry.") Hence I went with the soft "g" in my pronunciation of Gebofal. BUT that isn't a hard and fast rule, and I believe there are examples even in Angelical where the rule is broken. That's why I won't ever claim my pronunciation of this word was the correct one.
@yochanan7703 жыл бұрын
@@kheph777 right on. One could argue that I'm not pronouncing English properly. I think Duquette said it best when he postulated if a mouse hopped up on your knee and spoke a poor version of English, you would certainly pay attention.
@kheph7773 жыл бұрын
@@yochanan770 Yep! I completely agree with Lon on that one. We may get the pronunciations a bit wrong (that is, so far as we can for a language that isn't exactly a "spoken" one to begin with), but if we're putting in real effort to approximate it, the Angels can figure out what we're saying.

Oh wow excellent episode ! When I came to my studies of "Enochian Magic" it was from studying alchemy and I found a lot of alchemical imagery in this magic system. I like that you said that the system was supposed to lead him too some kind of spiritual revelation or beatific vision. I had similar ideas. That it was either leading something similar to a beatific vision or some kind of spiritual philosophers Stone. Either way excellent episode and I cannot wait tell I see your next on.

Crowley describes TEX as the 30th or "Inmost," which implies that the aethyrs are expanding spheres culminating in LI, the outermost or largest sphere next to the Infinite Absolute.

I'd be interested to see Dr. Sledge's take on Crowley's The Vision and the Voice in which he worked systematically through all 30 Aethyrs. Whatever one does or doesn't "believe" about magic and the occult, there's no doubt that Crowley received some powerful and intense visions by working with the system received by Dee and Kelley.
@TheEsotericaChannel7 ай бұрын
It's great visionary poetry....though Crowley went through the aeythers backwards.
@PrometheusMonk7 ай бұрын
@@TheEsotericaChannel There are certainly plenty of questions as to how to practice the system that Dee and Kelley received. Crowley, of course, was highly influenced by the Golden Dawn who took a lot of liberties in constructing a so-called Enochian system. But there is a Rosicrucian logic as to why one would go through the Aethyrs from the bottom up along the same lines as to why they Work up the Tree of Life from Malkuth to Kether. The path of the lightning bolt coming down the Tree depicts God's utterance of the Word and creation of the cosmos; but the spiritual aspirant aims at working back up this path, back to the Word of their creation unto godhead itself. They seemed to be applying the same logic in the way they approached the Aethyrs. It's an approach to transcendence, unlike the Dee and Kelley concern with earthly 'goods' such as buried treasure and remote viewing.
