I used to argue that critical thought should be taught throughout school life, now I wonder if epistemology might be a better subject, as it includes and goes beyond critical thinking. How many 'armchair experts' exist as a result of the ease of gathering information in this age of Internet? How do we teach people good info vs bad info? Am I right in thinking that an understanding of this subject may be the answer to eradicating ignorance, or at least encouraging reason? I mean, how many people are now arguing that the Earth is flat, and why don't they understand the quality of the information in their sources?

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that studies knowledge and belief. It deals with questions such as how we acquire knowledge, what counts as knowledge, and how we can be justified in believing something. Here are some simple examples of epistemology: If you see a red apple and believe that it is an apple, you are engaging in an act of knowing through observation. This is an example of how we can acquire knowledge through our senses. If you read a book about a historical event and accept the information presented as true, you are engaging in an act of knowing through testimony. This is an example of how we can acquire knowledge through the testimony of others. If you are trying to solve a math problem and use deductive reasoning to arrive at the correct answer, you are engaging in an act of knowing through reason. This is an example of how we can acquire knowledge through our own reasoning and cognitive processes. If you have a belief that is based on insufficient evidence or faulty reasoning, you are engaging in an act of believing without justification. This is an example of how our beliefs can be unjustified or irrational. In simplest terms, epistemology is the study of knowledge and belief. It seeks to understand how we can acquire knowledge, what counts as knowledge, and how we can be justified in believing something. Epistemology is important because it helps us to critically examine our beliefs and to determine whether they are justified or not. Free Research Preview. Epistemology is concerned about the scope of knowledge which is related to the truth, belief and the justification. Epistemology is known as the knowledge which claim by proof. For example, consumers believe any product or item which claim knowledge by proof.

Well, in general epistemology refers to the study of knowledge and it should have to be claimed by proof meanwhile belief in it as well. For instance, logistics refers to the activities that are involved in order to make sure the customers receive their demand of good or services. This is believed and claimed to be true because logistics and supply chain management are important in order to move goods from one place to another in order to satisfy the customers needs. For an example, logistics activities such as transportation is important to transfer the goods from one location to the other location where the customers are waiting to receive their demanded product or goods and services as well.

Thanks for sharing this. It also makes a nice distinction between knowing, based on experience vs. based on rationality. Generally, experience based knowing is more powerful. Still, an experience can be misunderstood. If, however, one has an experience, and is convinced that the experience is understood, then the sense of knowing that emerges is almost never affected by any rationally based argument.
@AnAncientDeity10 жыл бұрын
Ron Serrano Interpreting empirical observations needs rationality, doesn't it? If one's interpretation of empirical data isn't rational, no use of empiricism then.
@RonSerrano10 жыл бұрын
+ AnAncientDeity, rationality is based in the prefrontal cortex and can be very helpful. But there is also knowing that is more limbic, and outside conscious processing, that can be lead to more profound insights. It’s not that this kind of processing is “irrational”, rather, it transcends rationality.

What is the meaning of the statement "The person must believe in it." What does that entail? What does it mean to "believe"? What is the definition of "believe"? It seems entirely possible to be 100% correct about a subject by following a proper methodology and yet not need to believe it, they are still correct and it would still be knowledge as they know that it must be the case whether they like it or not. By the way that "Knowledge" is defined, knowledge is a type of belief. But what a belief is is never established. So to know is to believe plus stuff but to believe is to... know? believe? guess? randomly generate sentences? So to know we must believe which means we must .... Blank out. How do you KNOW what belief is? You KNOW what belief is because you believe belief exists and you have justification of it and it's true (what's true)?

I have always considered that there are only two problems in philosophy; the big one, episte, and ethics. I have never had a clue what metaphysics was. Now I know. There is no such thing. Remnants of Plato's theory of forms (an ancient view of the world), the mind/body problem (might have been a problem with Hobbs and Descartes but it is the discipline of neorologists today rather than a philosophical problem) and causality (already solved by Hume). As you point out it is just the book that follows Aristotle's book on physics but has no new material problems. Kant also considered that there were only two problems; episte and ethics. What he termed pure and practical reason and he made a massive contribution to solving both. Both problems have now been solved. Popper has solved the episte problem and law making is not done by reference to Bentham or Kant but by parliament (with debate and scrutiny, consultation with stakeholders, first and second readings, ammendments and second chamber review). I am a big champion of discipline (every other enquiry is a discipline) as in going forward and standing on the shoulders of giants and seeing further. When someone mentions empiricism, rationalism, analytical, continental, ontology, existentialism, phenominology, posivitism and any number or other evolutionary dead-ends I want to scream. Its a discipline stupid. We stand on the shoulders of giants and see further. If others think it is OK to mention seventeenth century empiricism then should we also include animism as a valid here and now talking point. No we should not. We go forward.
@DistractionDonkey9 жыл бұрын
David Lilley Interesting. I do not think at all that Hume "solved" the problem of causality, nor do most modern philosophers. Also, it just doesn't make sense that you want to "scream" when someone mentions empiricism, but claim that Hume "solved causality". You do realize he's one of the major protagonists of empiricism? So you basically did mention empiricism yourself. What a "stupid discipline"(?). Also, you claim that "Kant only considered that there were two problems", however, Kant states in a letter towards the end of his life that his big three questions throughout his work are: What can we know? What should we do? And what can we hope? (summed up by the question: what is man?) The last question which you chose to ignore is Metaphysics. The fact is, to most people there appears to be a transcendental layer to the universe or to the human perspective on it, and that continues to raise unsolved questions. So yes, there is "such a thing" as Metaphysics, and it needs to be there. Ontology isn't a dead end, it's one of the mayor branches of philosophy. If you think there is nothing left to be asked here, then tell me: Why does anything exist? I presume you don't have the answer, and that's why we have Ontology. Your whole approach to philosophy, in my view, appears entirely flawed. We do not seek definitive answers as any other science, so we never stop discussing these same questions. There's nothing wrong with it.
@davidlilley46379 жыл бұрын
DistractionDonkey This is a good answer and I will have to sleep on it. Aristotle gave us the demarcation between facts and values and Kant reinforced this demarcation with his pure and practical reason. Kant also discussed aesthetics but I'm no artist so I haven't read this. He is praised for it but we should concentrate on the big questions, facts and values, since philosophy does big. Let's get empiricism out of our system. Lets put empiricism v intellectualism behind us. If someone has a new theory/hypothesis/argument let's ask if it passes Tarski's truth criteria and not whether it came from empiricism or intellectualism. We don't ask the origin of a new theory we only test it. Hume trashed causality by trashing induction (see Popper). Philosophy does "big". The big questions are facts and values. We don't do what is man, what is our purpose, why are we here? We have no longer term value than the insect we just stood on.

I am having difficulty with the concept due to the word "Belief". Isn't knowledge "justified truth". Why does belief come into it. There are all kinds of beliefs some justified (albeit wrongly) and some untrue. Isn't true knowledge independent of beliefs. All replies appreciated.

Surely a belief backed by good evidence is a fact? At least when talking about your moon landing example? If there is good evidence that men landed on the moon then surely it is a fact and not a belief? I'm not sure - what do you think? Perhaps a better question is: What is the fundamental difference between a fact and a belief or perhaps even this: when does a belief become a fact? Hmmm.
@RandomP3rson7 жыл бұрын
Fact is still something that is experienced by a perceiver and therefore it is still intrinsically tied to belief. A fact is defined as something that is known to be true, or proven to be true. Both these situations are precarious as for example, in the past, it was "fact" that the sun revolved around the earth until Copernicus proved otherwise. Science evolves with accrued knowledge as does all kinds of "facts" of life. Therefore it is a belief, but it is the most likely truth that you, the perceiver, have discerned at that particular point in time.

Experience forms ideas & beliefs however knowledge can be true in fact or opinion or both in absolute truth. Either way every being has free will and an individual opinion even though the human race allows many controlled aspects. The division of people as a whole in fact is expanding, the balance is diluted by acts of unreasonable want instead of needs (waste of time) instead of feeding knowledge to our minds. Food water & shelter are denied by sociological constraints. Monitary value is a want defined by billions in billions of different ways the belief formed to be true that you need money to exist (you don't) except in a created formulated society.

If it is a "fact", you do not just "believe" it. If you believe sth there is an implication of some uncertainty.A fact is by definition a certain bit of information. To believe something also has the meaning or implication that your action will be affected by it even if you are not absolutely certain about it. If something is a fact , whether you believe or not does not affect its lawful status. So the official definition of knowledge does not apply to factual knowledge. If p is a fact , you do not say you "believe that p", you say directly " p ".

The best way to understand what knowledge is is to STUDY science and not STUDY EPISTEMOLOGY (EPISTEME= SCIENCE in Greek) so the best translation would be SCIENTOLOGY but i guess every one knows where this led...). When you make your first device or verify your first theory about how something works, you will know how to distinguish true from fake knowledge and claims, what works and what does not and how to solve your problems.
