For the ones wondering: Australia joined eurovision because they have been big fans for a very long time, a lot of people watched it every year. In 2015 they were allowed to join for just one year, in celebration of the 60th year of Eurovision. They sent Guy Sebastian, who placed 5th. The year after, Australia asked if they could join once more and everyone said 'yes'. They placed 2nd that year. Now, the reason they are allowed to join every year now, is because Oceania has too few countries to organise something this big.

Yeah because if every single country on earth would participate it would have taken like 5 days per competition (which I think is 3). The people in every country would have to vote and that would have taken a very long time. Just imagine how much votes every country in the world would gain. And then there's the jury. EVERY COUNTRY has a jury and all of them has to tell which countries should have this and this much points. That takes about 1 hour. Just imagine the time it would take if all countries on earth has a jury. That would have been EXTREMELY boring to watch. Still, Australia is in Eurovision 😂😂😂 and I believe China has been mentioned as a future competitor. Not really sure.

My thoughts exactly. Most of the "trolls" are songs that are more satiric than a troll, they speak about somethings that are absurd, like materialism, like the mustache song was about how manliness and materialism are some absurd thing, and he portrayed them in a song. The we are the winners song is about how all the countries are desperate to win. The singing puppet sang "irlande douze points" was about how all the countries make allies with other countries, that is why he was screaming countries names

All countries that are members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) get to take part in the contest if they want to. Because Israel and most other countries bordering the Mediterranean are members of the EBU, they can compete, though Israel is the only one of them who does. I think Eurovision is often made out to be a "freakshow", but that's only very partially true. In between all the funny songs, there are often some really good songs too. But for us (atleast in Denmark) it's a fun tradition to gather with family and friends and have fun watching it (it's only fun if you don't take it too seriously). The most interesting part is often the hours-long calling to all capitals and give points in both english & french. Although this part has become less fun over the years as they have changed the format since there are too many countries now (and there are also semi-finals, which is annoying).

To be fair, there's actually many countries that call football soccer. Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a few others also say soccer. However, that doesn't excuse the fact that Americans named their own sport football, which made everything much more confusing than it has to be.
@TNBuckeye16176 жыл бұрын
American Football, Canadian Football, Australian Football, Rugby Football, Gaelic Football, etc. all share a common origin with Association Football. Why would someone question why the most popular version of football in a country was known simply as football? As for "soccer"...thank the UK. The United States didn't invent a new word for Association Football, we just adopted the word that already existed to shorten the name of a new version of football that was gaining popularity and to more clearly market the sport. As for the origins of the the word soccer, look to the "Association" part of "Association Football". It doesn't take a giant leap to pull "soc" from "Association" and then to add "cer". It seems to me quite arrogant to expect the US to change the short-form name of our most popular version of football simply because "Association Football" exists.

There is a rule that if Australia wins, instead of moving the competition to Australia, they co-host with a European country and have Eurovision be held in that country instead. and most countries don't send troll songs in a hope to not win, for most countries (besides the big 5 and the winner from the previous year) the goal is to if not win, then at least get into the finale. Every year maybe 1 or 2 countries send what you call a troll song (i would call it entertainment song) and they can do really well.

To make a correction, Eurovision isnt only for european countrys, every country in the world can compete as long as that country is a member of EBU = European Broadcasting Union. Israel has been in ESC = Eurovision Song Contest since the 1970's. And songs are about 3:15 long not 3 min. Every country has its own competition a few months before to send the best song that the people have woted for. Also because there are so many countrys competing in ESC there are now two semi-final first. One on the tuesday, one on the thursday and the final on the saturday of Eurovision week.

Probably it has already been discussed, but the fall at 7:10 was on purpose. Spain decided to send a troll contestant as a parody in ESC 2008. The performer was not even a professional singer but a fictional character played by a TV comedy show actor! The choreography was also meant to be a full parody, and one of the dancers was acting as a fool the whole performance, purposedly "missing" the pace of the song and faking a fall. Truth to be told, the result was actually better than some other 'serious' performers from Spain in those years and the parody, in fact, revitalized the interest of the Spanish public on the ESC for that year, which was on the decline. At the end it's all about politics, true, but not only geopolitics

kanzennaposuto Those grandmas weren't Russian, they were from an ethnic minority that is like cousin to Finnish and Estonian people, the language is Udmurtian, also this ethnic minority, not Russian. Dresses too, Russian dresses and language are completly different.

Maybe they just got bored of sending geneticly putinsponsored supersongs only to loose cuz we all know what that is... No but seriously, there's a bit to much politics, especially around Russia

I kinda understand Australia in the Eurovision because they are kind of and european nation on a different continent but if USA joined it would be horrible. Also, Lordi is so awesome and I'm happy that we're probably the only ones that have won with metal.

Well, I don't think Australia should even be there, I just said that I kinda understand why they were allowed.

I think accepting Australia became tolerable since they let Morocco in, which is indisputably African. Eurovision has been de-Europeanized since the 80s.
@oliverjohnkallesoe4436 жыл бұрын
Another reason they are in Eurovision now is that they have broadcasted it for years in Australia (apparently) and therefore have been given a pass, they were supposed to only be guests once and continue being part of it if they won the first time they were there but they were so liked that everyone was like....hmmmm okay

If you're ever wondering how Australia became a part of Eurovision, it's quite simple AUSTRALIANS LOVE EUROVISION
@Lagiacrus19966 жыл бұрын
Finian, if you think that Eurovision was only Europe you are lying to yourself. There are several non-European countries in it. Armenia, Israel, Cyprus are 100% geographically outside of Europe. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Russia have most of their land outside of it. Hell, Morocco was in it once and Lebanon almost participated.
@moe38046 жыл бұрын
Matthew M All countries you mention can participate the contest bc they are inside European Broadcasting Area ( EBA in short ). EBA was created way back when EBU was created. The last time they expand it was 2008 when they include other 3 countries ( Azerbaijan, Georiga and Armenia bc they are member of Council of Europe and has more european culture and history from Europe ). So if your country is inside EBA the country's broadcaster can apply EBU Active membership. In EBU there 2 kind of membership Active and Assoicate. In order to participate Eurovision you most have Active membership in order to join. Australia is Associate membership so they can't by the rules but EBU just ignores it and makes exuses. Yes even Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia ( they withdrew in late 70s ) and lebanon can participate but these countries has no intrest bc of Isreal. Don't believe it? then just search EBA and go EBU website and click about members it will cleary say that Associate membership can't participate Eurovision.
@Lagiacrus19966 жыл бұрын
You sound ridiculous. The EBU doesn't "ignore" the rules, they MAKE the rules.
@moe38046 жыл бұрын
Matthew M Then why do they invite Australia when it says clearly " You need to have Active EBU membership in order to participate Eurovision "
@Lagiacrus19966 жыл бұрын
eurovision.tv/story/australia-to-compete-in-the-2015-eurovision-song-contest Why Australia, and not other countries? Australia has a long tradition of broadcasting the Eurovision Song Contest and a loyal fan base watching the event every year. Broadcaster SBS from Australia is also an Associate Member of the EBU. There is your reasoning, from the eurovision.tv website. Again, the people who make and decide on the rules cannot break them. If the EBU says we can participate even though we are an associate member, then we can participate even though we are an associate member.

Eurovision is kinda like the superbowl (without the ads). Everyone watches it but people from overseas just don't understand what all the hype is about 😂
@RafaelPedrodaSilva6 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why superbowl is so overrated. I don't see anything SO special in it, just a sports event like any other but with a big (and weird) interval act every year. But across the ocean, there's a big TV show in Europe (and Australia) named Eurovision Song Contest that is just amazing. I'm brazilian and I love Eurovision so much. This year I'm very excited about the singer representing Latvia: she is brazilian. I wish I could watch her live in Lisbon.
