What is evolution?

Good summary and overview (and I'm a staunch atheist). Looking for nails at low tide I've only one remark. There are no atheist, agnostic or christian perspectives on evolution any more than on say electricity. You either accept it or reject it. The point here is that science, including evolution theory, is for everyone. You already implied that this point is yours too.

Evolution is any change in the heritable characteristics of a population of organisms over successive generations. Examples include adaptation, genetic drift, and speciation (the emergence of new species), all of which have been directly observed. In its most basic form, it relies on the following principles: 1. All offspring are slightly different than their parents (mutation). 2. Some differences impact the likelihood that an organism will successfully reproduce (differential fitness). 3. Over time, mutations that increase fitness will become predominant in a population, while those which reduce fitness will dwindle (selection). 4. At some point, the accumulated mutations make a subset of the population distinct enough from their peers that humans decide it warrants a new name for that group (speciation). 5. Repeat this process for multiple millions of years, and the differences between sister populations become increasingly drastic, prompting humans to come up with branching categories like phylum, family, class, order, genus, etc (Cladistics).

As a Christian, I adopted all of these views (obviously, not at the same time). I now think one's belief about creation absolutely plays into core theological ideas (not that many Christians think deeply enough to recognise the problem). To me, any attempt to reconcile Christianity and evolution is like trying to square a circle. With a correct understanding of evolution, there is no space for just two humans through which a sinful nature was passed to all people. If Adam and Eve are allegorical, then creation was not good once and then corrupted, So instead of Jesus representing a way back to God, the Christian notion of the human condition no longer makes sense.

It DOES matter, it proves God’s existence, His power, His intelligent design. Paul says man is without excuse when they see all that God has created. Genesis can ONLY be taken literally. Trying to mesh science with Gods word is ludicrous. Men are liars, Gods word is true. If you leave room for both to be true you deny Gods word and His truth. It matters, if a man knows Gods word is TRUTH and the scientists are lying, they will know where to turn to for other truths in His word, which will lead them to the saving message of Jesus.

There is no evidence for any gods, let alone your favorite god. The natural diversity of life doesn’t prove your god at all.
