hi, I have a question, is it possible to use a SFP module that can go up to 22 KM with a 100M fiber single mode cable? Will this damage the converters?
@FS_com4 жыл бұрын
Hi, for your question, it is suggested to add an attenuator for the 22km SFP, for example, a 3dB attenuator might be the usual case for a 22km SFP used with a 100m SMF; if duplex SFP modules are used with duplex fiber cables at the two ends, both of the fiber strands need an attenuator. BTW, transceiver modules with a distance less than 20km usually do not need to add attenuators when used with short-distance fiber optic cables.

I'd like to use a fiber link to help minimize the chances of an electrical surge caused by lightning to propagate beyond the fiber. I was hoping to find a pair of small inexpensive devices, where I could simply plug CAT-5 ethernet into each one, and connect the two with devices with a fiber cable. Are there any "media converters" made to directly accept the fiber cable without having to buy these separate additional SPF modules?

can i use fiber to lan just because my adsl router has more option than the isp router?

Goodday! I hope you can help me. You see I bought a media converter for fiber to ethernet. I am planning to use it as a direct conversion between mu fiber line (the fiber ineternet direct line from the box) to my router using the media converter. Is that advisable? Also does the A and B media converter have differences because I think I bought B media converter. I already tried doing it (connecting from fiber line to media converter directly to my router since the router I bought doesn't have a fiber port) but the 2 lights for fx is not blinking. I don't know if my media converter is broken or anything but all of the 4 lights are blinking (all 3 tx lights and 1 fx the most below one is blinking) and the 2 lights in fx is not blinking. I hope you can help me. Thank so much!

Why was your ping time 19ms with fiber? That makes me concerned about the converter. 2 gigabit switches w/even cat 5e should be < 1ms, no?
@klymur4 жыл бұрын
@tgmforum tgmforum I understand throughput as a metric vs latency as a metric. That's not my question though. The distances in this demo, are on the order of a meter or so (they use patch cable), not 600 million meters w/regard to the moon. Latency for fiber for a few meters should, especially for 1-10Gb etherrnet switches, be well under 1ms... it should well under 0.1ms or 0.01ms for GB switches w/fiber interconnects. Also, they are demo'ing a converter... which better not add 19ms of latency... that would be a terrible converter w/that much added latency. I suspect the test at the console isn't actually using the setup on the table, because those numbers are not realistic for that setup. I suspect the 19ms latency is from testing on an actual cross region setup (for example... fiber from AWS's us-east-1 to us-east-2, or from eu-west-1 to eu-west-2 ... docs.aviatrix.com/HowTos/inter_region_latency.html ... not from a table top setup).

But on another note thanks for pointing out the latency I didnt even pay attention to the CLI and was close to purchasing this to protect my corerouter in the event of a lighting strike. Hi I want to inquire Will a 1/24 PLC Splitter work with a media converter? Gigabit Media Converter > 1/24 Splitter > Media Converter + AP (x24)
@FS_com6 жыл бұрын
Hello Sir, if you are planning to use Optical Time Division Multiplexing (OTDM), we'd suggest you use OLT and ONT devices instead of Ethernet media converters. Only when the transmission to the 24 APs is single-way, that is A to B1, B2, B3 ... B24, you can use the method [Gigabit Media Converter > 1/24 Splitter > Media Converter (x24)+ AP (x24)]. But if it is B1 to A, B2 to A, B3 to A ... B24 to A, the transmission is not feasible by only using Ethernet media converters. However, if you are simply looking for an effective way to connect you 24 APs, you can use PoE switches that have 24 RJ45 ports and optical uplink ports; if you want to extend the distance, then you can use Fiber to Ethernet media converters between the switch and the APs.

What transceiver modules would you recommend for this scenario?
@FS_com5 жыл бұрын
The type of the transceiver depends on how far and the fiber type(single mode or multimode) you want to transmit. Here we use SFP1G-LX-31 that is recommended for distance shorter than 20km.

Hi Stovall, Currently, our OLT cannot be used with media converters, it needs to be used with ONT, or with a managed switch equipped with GPON stick ONU module. ONT automatically obtains IP address through DHCP. At present, the rate of the PON port of our GPON OLT is upstream 1.25G/downstream 2.5G, which does not support the 10G rate required by customers.

Does this require you to have fiber optic dsl or any type of telephone internet connection to the home? From an ISP
@FS_com4 жыл бұрын
That depends. There are many types of media converter in the market, but sorry that I haven't seen a dsl to fiber or telephone to fiber media converter. Typical ones are Ethernet to Fiber media converters. For example, this 1G media converter (www.fs.com/products/35333.html) has an RJ45 port and a fiber SFP port. It only accepts Ethernet cables with RJ45 plugs in the copper port, while a telephone cable is typically with RJ11 plugs, meaning not feasible; the SFP port only accepts SFP fiber optic transceivers that connect with fiber jumpers. So home users usually buy a pair of these 1G media converters to extend the link distance to more than 100 m.

Do you need to have duplex fiber?
@FS_com5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Jeff. By "duplex fiber", do you mean if these media converters use duplex fiber? If so, the answer depends on the transceiver it uses. For example, when it plugs in a 1000BASE-X SFP, they need duplex fiber; when it plugs in a 10GBASE BiDi SFP, they need simplex fiber.
