Matt, this series is great! I’m a scientist in a cancer research lab, we work with quite a lot of flammable materials and I’ve been designated as fire safety officer; your contents have been extremely helpful in order to achieve the qualification! Thank you so much!

Hey, I'm glad you made this series. I've never taken any firefighting training beyond some simple fire rules from scouts. I'm 31 and just interested in understanding firefighting a bit better than, "Gee, idk." Fires are a very common thing in life to deal with, so I think everyone should have some simple understanding.

The entertaining and educational videos you have here are SO helpful to my studies. Thank you for bringing life and real examples to what my text book is struggling to express to newcomers like myself.

Hey Matt, really well done videos. The entire series! One thing that may confuse some people about this first video is how the wax gets from a solid to a liquid to a gas (heat -> melt -> up into the wick -> pyrolysis as you mention). I only throw it out there as it may be a stumbling block for some to grasp the concept of pyrolysis. i.e. is it the solid candle that's vaporized or the little pool of melted wax below the flame? And what about the wick? etc. etc.
@MattDavis53 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! There are a few things that I could have presented differently throughout the series. (It's all been a bit of trial and error in making the vids). But I do try to make them as accurate and straight forward possible 🙂
@cpattullo13 жыл бұрын
@@MattDavis5 ya, no worries. This is just a comment in case you ever come back and do an edit or add on. The whole series is *very* well done. You touch on content many others don't. And I've not seen it be in such an effectively presented series like this either. Kudos, big time.

Can some chemical reactions that emit a lot of heat in a short time be considered fire(without the participation of oxygen)?
@MattDavis58 ай бұрын
Interesting question. There are oxidising elements other than oxygen e.g. chlorine that will sustain a fire. But for it to be considered fire I would think it would need to be some kind of oxidation reaction. But I’m not really sure about the wider implications to be honest.

Thanks for making this series! I couldn’t find a decent explanation for pyrolysis anywhere!
@MattDavis52 жыл бұрын
Your welcome Tini. The lack of Pyrolysis videos was actually one of the motivations for the series. It's such an important part of fire dynamics and yet I couldn't find much in the way of straight forward explanation videos.

I used to be a scientist but I never knew it was the smoke that was burning! - in fact I thought that the smoke was some non-flammable dust or ash or something - thanks for the chemistry clarification! - but what about the smoke well above a bush fire? - would that still ignite if there was another flame introduced? - maybe there is cooling as the smoke rises and it becomes not hot enough to continue to burn?
@kaifrahman27032 жыл бұрын
Just a curious guy. I think if the smoke from bushfire gets another heat source, it could possibly catch fire and the resulting flame will be bigger than the bushfire.
